[ha-Safran] Title suggestions needed

2016-02-11 Thread Susan Kusel
I have a reference question I could use help with. Someone in our community
has reached out to us who would like to buy books for a Jew who is in prison,
and would like suggestions of titles to purchase. The prisoner in question is a
Jamaican Jew who has requested Jewish adult ed materials. The request has been
quite broad (the original request was just for Jewish books). It has been
difficult to narrow it down- since we are not directly involved in the
conversation... the requestor and the prisoner are writing letters back and
forth and it takes about a month to get any clarification.

We sent a list of several possible Jewish topics, and received this itemized
list in response: "#1 Jewish History, #2 Philosophy, #3 theology, and #4
Traditional Jewish Living. But I really like "Philosophy."

All these categories are still rather broad, and suggestions for your favorites
in these topics would be appreciated. Probably not the classics, it sounds like
he's already read those... more current titles would probably be better.

I'm a librarian at a reform synagogue, and if anyone can help with "traditional
Jewish living" that would also be very appreciated.

**Also- the particular prison that he is at does not allow for hardcover books,
so any titles would have to be available in paperback.

Thank you so much for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

[ha-Safran] Betsy Teutsch's new book 100 Under $100

2016-02-11 Thread Dina Tanners
I want to share with you an amazing new book by Betsy Teutsch, possibly better
known to many of you as a fantastic ketubah artist

It contains 100 different solutions to reduce problems in extreme poverty
areas. They empower women and each entry includes actionable items. It also has
great photographs to help convey the message of each entry.

Betsy is working on a Jewish link to the book with ties to Torah portions.

My rabbi is going to use the book with B'nai Mitzvah youth as it has many great
ideas for tzedakkah projects.

For more information check out her book Facebook page
Www.facebook.com/100under100
And her website w tons of resources at 100under100.org

I have just spent an unbelievable nine days with her with Fair Trade Judaica
and MayaWorks in Guatemala and was honored to go see one of the projects w her
that was mentioned in the book! That in itself is a great story!!!

[ha-Safran] Books in Spanish on Judaism.

2016-02-11 Thread Dina Tanners
I just had the honor to spend Shabbat with a small Reform congregation in
Guatemala City called Adat Israel. It was a truly amazing experience.

The group can especially use Spanish-Hebrew dictionaries and books in Spanish
with a Reform or Conservative bent on Judaism. If anyone has any spare books
like this or knows where to buy them, please let me know. The group has a
Facebook page so you can learn about them there.

[ha-Safran] Tanakh/Talmud concordance or an online tool

2016-02-11 Thread Amalia Warshenbrot
Dear friends,
Please reply to me with a request from my Havruta partner.
Do you know of either an English or Hebrew/English Tanakh concordance or,
ideally a Tanakh/Talmud concordance? If not, is there an online tool where I
can do key word searches that I haven’t yet found?
I asked if it can be in Hebrew/Aramaic. Here is his reply
It will take me far less time if it is at least Hebrew/English given that there
are often several Hebrew words translated as the same English word. And
phrases (as often found in Psalms) can be translated many ways. There really
should be some online source for this but everything I find is basically New
Testament/Old Testament concordance.

Thanking you in advance,

Amalia Warshenbrot
