[ha-Safran] Graphic novels

2016-12-13 Thread WJC Librarian
Hello!
I was approached by a second grader in the Hebrew School about graphic novels
for her age. She seems particularly advanced and has read the Barry Deutsch
books and loved them. Are there any other graphic novels/books with Jewish
content that I can purchase? I have the Rabbi Harvey books also.
Thanks
Arlene

Re: [ha-Safran] Books in a Mikveh

2016-12-13 Thread Micah Salb
Thanks so much to the folks who responded to my inquiry. Fortunately, we are
able to keep the books in a separate room (albeit within the mikveh suite), but
because the books are intended for casual use and not part of our regular
library collection, we will monitor them and replace any volumes that show
signs of damage.

Re: [ha-Safran] Books in a Mikveh

2016-12-13 Thread Emily Bergman
Micah,

First, I suggest you look at the NEDCC site. They have lots of useful
information about preservation:
https://www.nedcc.org/free-resources/preservation-leaflets/overview.

Secondly, I don't think you can prevent the damage without a real barrier
between the humidity/temperature of the mikveh and the materials. If you
monitor the humidity/temperature and find it's within the safe range, then
you're OK. Paper (both the pages and the cardboard of the covers) absorb
moisture incredibly quickly, especially if it's warm. You can see the
changes in a day, as the pages begin to wrinkle and the covers begin to
bend. Even worse, is the possibility of mold, as it is a plant and grows
very quickly from book to book in the right environment (warm and moist)
and never really is killed.

If these books are not being collected for the long-term but for short term
use, then just check their condition regularly and get rid of the ones that
look like they are absorbing the moisture.

I've been active in the preservation community in Los Angeles for over 20
years, so this is just from what I've learned and my experience over the
years. Others may know more and have different recommendations.

Thanks,
Emily

[ha-Safran] Move Over, Shmelf…There Are Other Books on the Shelf

2016-12-13 Thread Rachel Kamin
As many of you probably saw, this past fall I posted a critical review of the
new picture book Shmelf the Hanukkah Elf by Greg Wolfe on Amazon, Barnes &
Noble, GoodReads, and Facebook. This caused quite a brouhaha. My review was
quoted in the Tablet magazine article, “Stay in Your Lane, Elf,” by Marjorie
Ingall,
and I was interviewed (along with my colleague Kathy Bloomfield, who reviewed
the book in the September/October 2016 issue of AJL Reviews) by Heidi
Rabinowitz for the Book of Life
Podcast.
Those of us familiar with Jewish children’s literature know that there are so
many excellent books that introduce the story and customs of Hanukkah, that
help Jewish children deal with Christmas envy, and that authentically and
sensitively depict interfaith or multi-faith families. My recommendations were
posted on the Horn Book Family Reading Blog at
http://www.hbook.com/2016/12/blogs/family-reading/move-over-shmelf-there-are-other-books-on-the-shelf/
. Please share and comment as you see fit. There are lots of good choices out
there that don’t resort to leaving a latke and kosher pickle out for one of
Santa’s Hanukkah elves!

Happy Hanukkah!
