Hi everyone,
 A staff member at my synagogue is looking for historic newspaper headlines 
that announce Israel's statehood. They need to be the images of the front 
pages- not just the full text of the articles.

I was able to find pictures of the front pages for the New York Times and the 
Washington Post for May 15, 1948, but she would also really like pictures from 
European and Israeli newspapers.

If you have access to a database that can do this, and have time to send me a 
PDF or JPEG, it would be greatly appreciated. Google does not have the kinds of 
images she is looking for.

" 'A Feeling of Self-Disgust Attacks Me': The Attitudes of Eastern European
Jewish Immigrants toward African Americans"

Gil Ribak, University of Arizona

With the mass migration of Jews from eastern Europe that began in 1881,
European Jewish immigrants encountered Black Americans, their clientele and
neighbors, as these east European Jews served as storeowners, tavern
keepers, peddlers, pawnbrokers, and landlords in Black neighborhoods.

Gil Ribak will discuss the various ways in which Yiddish journalists and
writers, social workers, educators, intellectuals, communal activist,
poets, rabbis, and union organizers portrayed African Americans in the late
19th and early 20th centuries, a period that partially overlapped with the
mass migration of Jews from Europe with the Great Migration of African
Americans from the South.

Gil Ribak teaches at the University of Arizona, and is a Fordham-NYPL
Fellow in Jewish Studies.

[ha-Safran] Members needed for Manuscript Award Committee

Call for Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award Competiton Committee members.


There are two openings on the Manuscript Award Committee beginning in Spring 
2018. Members may serve on the committee for five years.


Interested AJL members should send a curriculum vitae highlighting experience 
with children’s literature and two writing samples, preferably book reviews.


In addition to being AJL members, committee members must have expertise in 
Jewish children’s literature and be able to meet firm deadlines. Committee 
members need not be actively working in a library setting.


The committee’s charge is to select a work of fiction in English with universal 
appeal of Jewish content for readers aged 8 to 13 years, both Jewish and 
non-Jewish. The winning manuscript should reveal positive aspects of Jewish 
life.


The work of the committee runs from October 1 through mid-January.
