2019-09-05 Thread Amanda Seigel via Hasafran
Dear Safranim,

You are cordially invited:

Fordham-New York Public Library Jewish Studies Lecture Series:

"A history of the Jewish Theater in Buenos Aires: from the star system
to the Idisher Folks Teater (1930-1960)"

Paula Ansaldo, University of Buenos Aires

Thursday, October 3, 2019, 6 p.m.

Fordham University-Lincoln Center, 155 West 60th Street, McMahon 109

During the first decades of the twentieth century, a large population
of Yiddish-speaking Jews settled in Buenos Aires escaping from
European hard living conditions and anti-Semitism. As a result, a rich
Yiddish cultural life began to grow and Buenos Aires became one of the
main centers of Yiddish theater between 1930 and 1960. In this talk,
Paula Ansaldo will explore the development of the Jewish Theater in
Argentina, giving special attention to the history of the Idisher
Folks Teater (IFT): the first Jewish theater company formed by local
actors and actresses that performed in Buenos Aires on a regular
basis.

All Fordham events in Jewish Studies are free and open to the public.

The Fordham-NYPL Fellowship Program in Jewish Studies is made possible
by the Eugene Shvidler Gift Fund at Fordham University and additional
gift funds to Jewish Studies at Fordham University. This joint
fellowship program is for scholars in all fields of Jewish Studies
from outside the New York City metropolitan area and provides support
for their on-site research, especially the Dorot Jewish Division.
Fellows will receive an affiliation with Fordham University for the
duration of their fellowship, and deliver one public presentation and
one faculty seminar.
