Re: [ha-Safran] Sad News

2022-01-28 Thread Ellen Lorang via Hasafran
I was so saddened to hear this news. Our 4 children graduated from the
Hebrew Day School, and under her guidance they had the best education
imaginable -- both Judaic & secular. The values instilled by Marlene and
her wonderful staff live on. She was an awesome example of all the best
that Jewish education has to offer.

Fondly and sadly,

Yesterday, I sent out an endorsement for Kelvin Watson for President of ALA.
There are dozens of reasons to vote for Kelvin, a few of which I listed in my
previous post, including support from others who know about his amazing
accomplishments.

I would be remiss, however, if I didn't also mention the “flip side” and
mention some of the unsettling aspects of his opponent for the top leadership
spot in ALA.

All those who participated in the Zoom interview with Emily Drabinski on
January 19, 2022 should have noticed that her candidacy is troubling.

Please look at these links carefully, including petitions, which Ms. Drabinski
signed attacking Israel as an “apartheid” and “colonial” state; she also
endorses not only BDS, but academic boycotts of Israel, Israeli scholars, and
Israeli scholarship.

While I certainly do not advocate censorship, this is not merely an issue of
free speech, which I firmly believe in, but that ALA and librarianship as a
profession are all about finding and presenting well-supported facts, not
disseminating propaganda to bolster a specific political point-of-view or
agenda.

What is perhaps most disturbing about Emily Drabinski's candidacy is that she
makes a point of claiming that she wants to steer clear of what pulls us apart
and concentrate on what we have in common, what brings us together. Yet she
proudly embraces and advances contentious issues such as the Social
Responsibility Round Tables's proclivity to concentrate only on what Israel
does to the exclusion of all of the repressive regimes surrounding Israel and
the very serious human rights violations of all other countries and terrorist
groups. How does this kind of politicking bring people together, and how is
this not the very source of the very divisiveness Emily Drabinski states she
wants to avoid? This strikes me as talking out of both sides of one's mouth.

If you are an ALA member and/or know people who are, I urge you to vote for
Kelvin Watson for ALA president and/or ask your friends, colleagues, and
acquaintances to do the same. He is a person who works with people to truly
advance the mission of ALA and is a proven leader who brings pe

Re: [ha-Safran] List of Elazar-cataloged libraries?

I was looking for it too.
The list included libraries that used other classification systems too.

Subject: [ha-Safran] List of Elazar-cataloged libraries?

There used to be a page of libraries that use the Elazar classification system.
I'm having difficulty finding it on the AJL member website.
Is it still available?
I'm training a Hebrew-literate person to enter books in our on-line catalog,
and hoping to find resources for her to use.
Thank you!

[ha-Safran] AJL Establishes Endowment Fund

2022-01-28 Thread AJL PR via Hasafran
Dear Friends,

After fifty-six years, the Association of Jewish Libraries has now established
an endowment fund, a sure sign of the long-term success of our organization and
the fulfillment of a longstanding dream of many of us. The AJL Endowment Fund,
which began with an initial contribution from AJL’s reserve fund and additional
gifts from several members, will allow people to bolster Judaic librarianship
today, tomorrow, and well into the future.

It is our goal that the AJL Endowment Fund, with Merrill Lynch as our advisor,
will disperse 5% each year to fund AJL’s efforts and activities—including our
many book awards, scholarships for library students, and conference support for
our members—basing the funds available for distribution on the income derived
from the interest and dividends on the principal. That means gifts given today
will not only benefit Judaic librarianship now but long into the future.

Visit our website
for more information, or contact Jerry Krautman, AJL Development Consultant
(ajldevelopmentconsult...@gmail.com
), to discuss giving options.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Kathy Bloomfield
AJL President
