[ha-Safran] Reference Books about places in the old country

2022-03-07 Thread Michelle Sandler via Hasafran
Dear RAS Librarians:

Jewish Genealogists have been asking for books with historical information
about Jewish communities in Eastern Europe.

I am looking for a comprehensive list of books like Yizkor books and Pinkas
Hakihilot that talk about towns in the old country. I know of all the
Jewish encyclopedia sets, Where Once We Walked 2nd edition. I have access
to a comprehensive list of Yizkor books on JewishGen. All books in any
language excepted. I want to make a comprehensive list for my role as head
of Jewish Genealogy libraries for the International Association of Jewish
Genealogy Societies. I eventually plan to put these lists on the IAJGS
website in the library section.

I wonder how libraries and other bodies would respond if you showed them a book
with a map where Mexico was labeled as US territory? Or the Republic of
Ireland was labeled as part of the United Kingdom? At a time when the world is
watching in horror as Putin is trying to erase Ukraine, people should
understand that these things matter.

Ukraine and Poland . Donations made are not tax deductible in the US. FYI,
there are 4.5 zloty to the US dollar; $100 US= 450 zloty.

3. Direct Relief has established this special Ukraine fund

and is working directly with Ukraine’s Ministry of Health and other partners
in the region to provide requested medical aid, from oxygen concentrators to
critical care medicines – while preparing to offer longer-term medical aid to
people displaced or affected by the conflict. Donations are tax-deductible.

4. HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, is responding with HIAS emergency

assistance
to those who are displaced. A HIAS response team is in
Poland
