Event Details
Librarians, writers, and scholars celebrate America’s oldest Jewish public
library and its journey into the 21st century.

The Dorot Jewish Division at The New York Public Library is the oldest
Jewish public library in America. Established in November 1897, it
celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. Its quarter million books,
microforms, manuscripts, newspapers, periodicals, and ephemera from all
over the world compose one of the world's great collections of Hebraica and
Judaica. Its central location in New York City and reputation as a hub for
research across the spectrum of Jewish studies have made it a crucial
destination for generations of scholars, writers, and readers.

Librarians and curators in the Dorot Jewish Division will be joined by
scholars and writers from around the country to discuss the history of the
Division, and its plans for building the collections for the future, and
its continuing centrality to Jewish studies in the 21st century. Featuring:

   - Zachary Baker, Reinhard Family Curator Emeritus of Judaica and
Hebraica Collections at the Stanford University Libraries
   - Michelle Margolis, Norman E. Alexander Librarian for Jewish Studies at
Columbia University and the President of the Association of Jewish Libraries
   - Dr. Lyudmila Sholokhova, Curator of the Dorot Jewish Collection at The
   New York Public Library
   - Magda Teter, Professor of History and Shvidler Chair of Judaic Studies

Re: [ha-Safran] For SSCPL librarians: card-to-mobile game to teach about Mishneh Torah

“Games are rule-based systems,” Dr. Gottlieb said. “And legal systems also
are rule-based systems.” So the question became: “Could we come up with a
game that models legal cases as a way to look at rabbinic literature?”

Perhaps the registration form is simply a holdover from previous years, and
the conference organizers need to have the egregious omission of Israel

[ha-Safran] Recommendations for Hebrew Vendors

2022-11-08 Thread Zena Tenenbaum via Hasafran
Hello,

I work for a medium sized public library system in Ontario, Canada. We are
looking for a supplier of Hebrew language materials. Mainly popular fiction for
adults and children but also DVD's and CD's. We would appreciate any
recommendations either online or bricks and mortar, in the US or in Israel.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give us.

Re: [ha-Safran] List of Juv/YA titles that include depictions of antisemitism that are not Holocaust based

2022-11-08 Thread Marjorie Gann via Hasafran
How about Fran Arrick's* Chernowitz*, about a ninth-grade boy named Bobby
Chernow who has never experienced antisemitism until a bully enters the
class? I read it many years ago and found it to be a powerful depiction of
how antisemitism can take over a class (a metaphor, I would say, for a
population).

Although in my vague recollection of the book, it ends with the teacher
showing the class a video about the Holocaust, the antisemitism it
describes is indigenous to America.

It's an old book (copyright 1983), but you can check it out on Amazon,
which still carries it and even has a "Look Inside" feature, so I'm
guessing it may have gone into reprint. Don't know for sure.
