[ha-Safran] Jewish resources for mental health and emotional support

2022-12-13 Thread D Winter via Hasafran
Hi Everyone,

In light of current events, my library is creating a support resource
handout for patrons from marginalized groups. We are looking to include
organizations for Jewish patrons to call for mental health and emotional
support. Which organizations might you include?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [ha-Safran] Hasafran Digest, Vol 569, Issue 2

2022-12-13 Thread rivka schiller via Hasafran
My response is in reference to the following query:
Hello!
Is anyone aware of the existence of a Yiddish map of Chicago? Either a stand
alone map or a map published as part of a larger work?

Thanks in advance for any leads,

Anne

Anne K. Knafl, Ph.D. (she/her)

Dear Anne,
If you haven't yet contacted the Asher Library at the Spertus Institute
(located in downtown Chicago), the Chicago Jewish Archives, or the Chicago
Jewish Historical Society, I would definitely try tapping into these different
local resources.
I formerly worked at the Asher Library and read Yiddish.  There were definitely
Yiddish writers in Chicago and the daily Yiddish newspaper, der Forverts, once
had a branch located on the West Side of Chicago.  But I do not recall actually
seeing a Yiddish language map that specifically focused on Chicago.
If you were to conduct a search for "map of Chicago" in Yiddish -- something I
myself have already done online (but come up empty) -- it should read as
follows in Hebrew characters:
מאפע פון שיקאגע or מאפע פון שיקאגא
Incidentally, if you do track down such a map, it would be wonderful if you
would please share it via URL or a scanned attachment with the rest of us here.
Good luck in your search!

Hi Everyone!

Archaeologists have uncovered a cache of 2,200-year-old silver coins
near the Dead Sea, which they say is the first physical proof that Jews
fled to the Judean Desert during the upheaval and persecution under
Hanukkah villain Antiochus IV Epiphanes.

I posted the article, images and videos of the Israel Antiquities Authority
announcement at:
jr.co.il/only-in-israel/2200-year-old-coin-hoard.htm

Chanukah starts this Sunday night, December 18.
I updated the Chanukah links at:

I added many new videos to the 1,100+ Chanukah video list at:
jr.co.il/videos/chanukah-videos.htm
Additional videos will be added this week.

New photos at the Chanukah Gallery at:

We'd like to put together a tribute article in the next *News and Reviews* on
Dr. Schmelzer. I'll be collecting short reflections or memories. If you
are interested in sharing something, please send it to me at
mc3...@columbia.edu.

Due to space constraints, I don't think we'll be able to add more than a
few lines per person, but I would be happy to collate it all and send the
unabridged version onward to the family as well, so feel free to write as
much as you'd like (but know it'll be edited for what gets published!)

My best,

Dear Avinoam,

I am writing to you because yours is the only email address I was able
to find for someone related to your dear grandfather, Professor Menachem
Schmelzer z"l . I was a student of his at JTSA in the late 1970's and early
1980's. I was so fond of him. He was such a fine person. I was a student
in his class on Mahzor Yom Kippur and later had the pleasure of knowing him
as a librarian myself. We in AJL ( The Association of Jewish Libraries)heard
many fascinating and informative talks that he gave to our professional
librarians' group at their many meetings and conferences over the years.

I worked at JTS in the music library from 1989 -1993 and even though he was
not the Seminary Librarian for all those later years, he was often there and
I had occasions to chat with him. He was such a memorable person and I was
so fortunate to have known him.

May his memory be a blessing always. Please share this message of comfort
with you family.

Marion Stein JTS Master in Jewish Studies, 1981 and Music Librarian

Re: [ha-Safran] Book challenge policy and form

2022-12-13 Thread ALBA TOSCANO via Hasafran

Hi friends, I am looking for a simple policy to have when a library is
presented with a book challenge. If you have a form to fill out, that
would be helpful too. I want something specifically for a synagogue
library. I just had my second challenge
policy to have when a library is presented with a book challenge.

I'm fascinated: What's a book challenge?
