[ha-Safran] Nazi looted books survey

2023-12-12 Thread Mizrachi, Diane via Hasafran
Dear Colleagues,

It has become apparent that librarians at several academic and institutional
libraries, and some working with private collections, are simultaneously
working on projects to identify in their collections and curate books looted by
Nazis or otherwise stolen from Jews and Jewish organizations during the Nazi
period. Some were purchased in good faith from books sellers after World War II
and may need to be repatriated; others were acquired from the Jewish Cultural
Reconstruction program (JCR), or as part of cultural exchange programs with the
Nazi regime in the 1930s. AJL has created a task force to pool our experiences
and create useful sources with regard to these efforts.

If you or your institution have had any experience with Nazi era looted books
whether programmatically or randomly, please help us by completing this short
survey. The results will be included in an internal report to AJL.

[ha-Safran] Invest in Libraries: Please sign pledge to advocate for NYC public library funding

2023-12-12 Thread Amanda Seigel via Hasafran
Dear Safranim,

Please sign this pledge of support for New York City's public libraries and
feel free to forward it to others.

https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://investinlibraries.org/__;!!KGKeukY!3BAJs365cD3QLsgIDlMT0jd9DWhnUTkUqiCvDnPs70NYz900O6c5j3ute4ZjeAz96qmCye3ZAzT_jJjLJ4Lc_r74vA$

New York City's public libraries recently lost seven-day library service
(meaning no more Sunday service, for the most part) and we are now in
danger of losing universal six-day service, all due to budget cuts.

The Dorot Jewish Division is just one part of a major library system that
provides research and borrowing materials, programming, and vital services
for New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds, all for free. Please help us
to continue our work for the community.

Here are more details:

"Statement from Brooklyn Public Library, The New York Public Library, and
Queens Public Library on Fiscal Year 2024 Budget Cuts

December 11, 2023—“This coming weekend marks the last day of seven-day
service at New York City libraries, the result of the 5% mid-year City
budget cut announced last month. Recently, the Brooklyn, Queens, and New
York public libraries were instructed to meet another 5% mid-year budget
cut in January. If this additional round of budget cuts is enacted,
libraries will be forced to further reduce hours, including ending
universal six-day service, which New Yorkers fought hard to restore in
2015. We know that public libraries and the vital services we provide are a
lifeline for many New Yorkers, and remain committed to continuing to serve
our communities as best we can in these challenging times.”

Thank you in advance for your support!

Sincerely,

--
