AJL Israel Updates and Requests for Volunteers

Dear Members,

It is so hard for me to write this letter. Many of us are facing so much this
week, with the loss of or fear for friends, family members, or colleagues. I am
writing to update you on where we stand as an organization on current events.
For those who have asked, our statement is available here.

To our Israeli members: we've heard from some of you about possible ways we can
help; we are eager to do what we can to support you, so please do be in touch.

Many of you have asked how you can help from afar. Some initiatives below are
actively seeking volunteers and even coordinators; if you would like to step in
to lead, please reach out to me directly or to the person indicated.

1. We will be sharing information regarding a zoom space for members to come
and be with each other next week. If it seems to be helpful to hold these
spaces, we will continue to do them at various times of day so everyone has a
space to be with friends and colleagues.

2. Storytime: Aviva Rosenberg (aviva.h.rosenb...@gmail.com) is coordinating
possible storytimes for Israeli children.

3. We are librarians! Our job is to provide information. At present, we are
looking for volunteers willing to pull together multiple lists. Please reach
out to me if you can take this on:

1) Love Your Neighbor Israel List: This is already available; please feel free
to share widely.

2) Libguides: Is someone willing to pull together a “top three” libguide about
Israel?

3) Books and films: We've already been asked for a “good read” on how to learn
about Israel. Is someone willing to pull together a top ten? Bear in mind that
this is about presenting accurate information; a good list will have multiple
valid perspectives.

Thanks to Vanessa Freedman for this link to an example with a guide to Ukraine,
which is the kind of thing we'd like to put together:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ssees/ssees-ukraine/resources__;!!KGKeukY!wDOj2iHFXRWDxs989lylb44DkkkKlvyXiyczExNqXV2cSG8droSvxCvAU1uzvABtkZqo9HNlEHgL6c-z4bzT$

4. I've been in touch with our colleagues at the National Library of Israel,
and they have sent the following request for our assistance with web archiving:

“During these difficult times, we in the National Library of Israel are working
to locate and preserve online discussion involving the war. We are interested
in any content that documents the events, including websites, forums, and
social media accounts in Israel and any other country. We would be grateful to
receive lists of relevant links via this google sheet template, or simply by
email to webarch...@nli.org.il”

5. We'd love to add more Israeli libraries to our AJL map:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://jewishlibraries.org/mapping-ajl/__;!!KGKeukY!wDOj2iHFXRWDxs989lylb44DkkkKlvyXiyczExNqXV2cSG8droSvxCvAU1uzvABtkZqo9HNlEHgL6anw_Mfy$

That's it for now. Please don't hesitate to reach out to your AJL Board,
Council, and fellow members—we are all here for each other during this
difficult time.

With all best wishes for a peaceful and healing Shabbat,

Michelle

I have a reader looking for the short story "My Mother's Kerchief" by I.L.
Peretz.  It does not appear in any anthology that I own or have in the library

Does anyone have a clue as to how to find the story?

I encourage libraries to promote and feature Jewish genealogy resources.  It is

 Dear Sally and Safranim,
I have been following with interest the conversation about yizkor books.
NYPL has two yizkor books for Lipkany:
Lipḳan fun amol (1957) Ḳehilat Lipḳani : sefer zikaron (1963).
Both are listed in our Yizkor books LibGuide with links to the catalog record
and digitized versions  (I recommend using the PDFs from the Yiddish Book
Center)Here is a link to the guide:

English translations, often partial, are generally on JewishGen. Here's a

Yes, there are many ongoing efforts to translate yizkor books into English
since the majority are in Hebrew, Yiddish, and a few other languages besides
English. Maybe you could get together with some other landslayt to sponsor a
translation.
In addition, there is an OCR (optical character recognition) keyword search
available online for digitized yizkor books. Here's where to find it:
1) Genealogy Indexer -  keyword search in the Latin, Hebrew, or Cyrillic
alphabet here:

Our staff is also available to help with checking the table of contents or
index - please contact us if you have any questions.

Best wishes,

online translations of a Yizkor book, Lipkan fun amol (Lipcan of Old)I've only

My grandfather was born Lipkan, Bessarabia. If there are any other Lipkaners

Re: [ha-Safran] a very basic query

2020-07-30 Thread Beth Dwoskin via Hasafran
The reason to keep them is to match donations and returned books against them
to make sure you're not receiving a title that you already weeded. It's also
good if someone requests an old title and you want to explain why you don't
have it. This becomes less of an issue as time goes on. You could have a high
schooler enter them into a spreadsheet.

How did this happen?  I pushed to be on the EMIERT Program Committee.  The

online, and the committee had to come up with a new program quickly, I
suggested Heidi to join a DC school librarian to talk about this topic, and we
are so lucky she agreed.
I can't tell you how happy I am with how the program turned out.  It really
brought out the diversity of materials to have speakers from such different

Thank you, Heidi, for stepping up and preparing for this program on short

Re: [ha-Safran] Ancestry.com in the library

2018-01-21 Thread Beth Dwoskin
I agree with Amanda. As I said in my presentation at AJL in June, Ancestry
aggregates databases that are individually available for free. It is useful for
Jews to research their ancestors in America but if they want to use it that
way, it is available in most public libraries.
The better approach is to feature Jewishgen as a library resource.  But, I
would be interested to know what Ancestry charges small libraries.

 Hi, Clare,
We have Ancestry (Library Edition) at NYPL. It's one of our most frequently

The version we have is for use onsite (there is no remote login option).

Here is a link describing the difference:
https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/Ancestry-vs-Ancestry-Library-Edition

And this link describes the features for Jewish genealogy specifically (they
have partnered with JewishGen): https://www.ancestry.com/cs/jewishgen-all
In my experience, JewishGen has much more extensive global data for Jewish
genealogy. Mainly, we use Ancestry for vital records in the U.S.
I would recommend Ancestry as a resource, but I would also consider whether
it's already available at your local public library, how much it costs for your
library to subscribe, and what relationship it has to your library collection
and services.
Best wishes,
Amanda

will be nice to have a few articles on Jewish bookstores in Judaica

I visited Biegeleisen Books in Brooklyn.  We had the chance to meet Aaron

his 90th birthday). We enjoyed listening to the stories he told about  how his
grandfather came to this country and set up the business in the early 1900s.
They even have a file of letters, invoices and other ephemera dealing with the
store that dates back to the “early days”. It would be wonderful if someone in
NY could take senior  Biegeleisen’s oral history and video it.  The firm has
been such a part of the Judaica book scene, it would be a shame to miss this

Re: [ha-Safran] Questions for Jewish Librarians

2017-01-08 Thread Beth Dwoskin
I just sent a paper to Judaica Librarianship proposing a project like this for
yizkor books.  It would be an international database.  If it worked, it could
be a model for all Jewish content.
My paper talks about the implications for cataloging.  The two big questions,
which I don't address, are an umbrella structure for housing the data, doing
maintenance, etc., and funding.

I had a similar idea about creating a database of Jewish resources way back in
1980, when I was AJL President.  I invited colleagues from academic/archival

of National Jewish Bibliographic Data Base.”   We discussed it for quite awhile
via the U.S. mail.  (We didn’t have the luxury of the Internet or emails
then!).  We met at national conventions and once even in my Library in Los
Angeles.  It was of great interest.  I remember that we reached the point of
discussing potential funding sources!
BUT, then, the 1982 Lebanon War occurred, and all funding priorities were for
Israel's defenses, of course, and none for future resources.  I think I may
still have the correspondence hard copies - but doubt that it would be of much

I don’t recall hearing anything more about this idea, but I’m long retired from

I like to keep current - thus my joining this ha-Safran discussion.  I still
think it's a very very worthwhile project and, with today’s technology, it
seems very doable.

Re: [ha-Safran] FW: ALA resolution boycotting companies working with IDF

2015-01-27 Thread Beth Dwoskin

I respectfully submit the following slight edits (in red):
The Association of Jewish Libraries is an international professional
organization that fosters access to information and research in all forms of
media relating to all things Jewish. The Association promotes Jewish literacy
and scholarship and provides a community for peer support and professional
development. The AJL is an affiliate of ALA and stands firm in its opposition
to any attempt to politicize the ALA through bigoted and hateful targeting of
the State of Israel and its citizens, as well as opposing veiled threats
against any American company doing business in Israel. The AJL also condemns
the blatant censorship exercised by the Council by scheduling this meeting on
the Jewish Sabbath, thus effectively denying the rights of observant Jewish
members of ALA to participate in this discussion. The AJL believes that the
mantle of “broad social responsibilities,” is crucial to the spirit of ALA, and
therefore should be applied responsibly and equally to address issues such as
religious freedom, genocide, terrorism, and denial of equal rights and free
speech to women and LGBT citizens. Please note, the latter denial mentioned is
the case in many if not most Arab countries,BUT NOT IN THE DEMOCRATIC STATE OF
ISRAEL!

Re: [ha-Safran] Uncatalogued items question

2014-01-07 Thread Beth Dwoskin
You may have to catalog them yourself, but first search them on Worldcat,
Jewish library databases such as the National Library of Israel and the Jewish
Theological Seminary, and AJL member catalogs:
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/main/Resources/Membersrsquo;Catalogs.aspx

If you have to catalog from scratch, be sure to search the name in the LC name
authorities list:  http://authorities.loc.gov/

Have you been retaining LC and DDC classification and LC subject headings in
the records you're downloading?  Do you plan to edit them to include Weine or
Elazar classification or Jewish subject headings?  Build your original record
to be consistent with the rest of your database.

Re: [ha-Safran] LibraryThing query

2013-03-19 Thread Beth Dwoskin
We're using it temporarily while I decide what's the best permanent solution.

We put the Weine number in the Dewey field.  There's a field called "From
where" that you could use for the accession number.  You can't add your own
subject headings.

Colleagues - I just spent a lot of time exploring the LibraryThing site.
I don't have any other choice for a catalog except making  one by hand,
which is no longer a real choice.  Before I click the button, perhaps
you can tell me what I can't find on the site:

1. Can I enter a Weine classification number?
2. Is there a place for an accession number?
3. Can I put in my own subject headings?

Is there anything you think I ought to know?

Thank you.

A patron is looking for information about Jewish women’s
reading interests in the 1960s and 70s. Does anyone know of a list of such
titles, or a source for researching this? She is a librarian at a university,
so she’s already searched various sources, but is still looking for
information. We all know about Belva Plain, Julie Ellis, etc – but beyond
these obvious writers of women’s books, who were the popular authors?
Thank you.

Hi,

I am trying unsuccessfully to remember the name of a
wonderful short story by a Yiddish writer. The story concerns a poor
humble,naïve,
man who, upon reaching the gates of heaven, is asked what he would like most.
He answers that a nice, warm roll in the morning would be wonderful. I think
the story is called Bunchee Swag (pardon my Yiddish!) – Any ideas?

Re: [ha-Safran] RDA and the Bible

2012-06-06 Thread Beth Dwoskin
RDA is removing the Testament part of the uniform title when a work contains
only one book, of either testament.  The uniform title will then be: Bible.
Genesis or: Bible. Corinthians, etc.

The 245 will still contain the transcription of the title page, as in AACR2.

The purpose of cataloging using uniform titles is to gather all the same works
under the same title.  Assistance in finding items, rather than educating the
public, is the purpose of cataloging.

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] RDA and the Bible

Some people seem to be confused and misunderstand my question, but I have
already had the right answer so I do not need to post this, but in case I do
need to further explain the answer I will. I was meaning to refer to the
context of any public or academic library cataloging the RDA example that just
is for the book of Genesis or the book of Gospels as individually bound items.
RDA is confusing and disorganized and does not make sense, so if I FRBRize it,
it one example that RDA is thinking (in their own Christian minds) when they
make their statements could look like this:
Work- The Bible
E1- The Old Testament
E2- The New Testament
M1- A publication of separately bound books of the bible- in a series
I1-Genesis
I2- Exodus
etc.
I6- Matthew
etc.
In this case it would still say on the title page Old Testament (or Hebrew
Bible) and New Testament. I would still feel comfortable saying you should
still designate something separate for the book of Genesis so it is considered
a separate Work in the bib. record even if the local practice is Old Testament,
to educate the public that it is a different historical work from the book of
Matthew as a New Testament, in the case that New Testament is on the title
page. If a book of Genesis is separately published within a series and has some
designation, either Hebrew bible or Old Testament, it would be wrong to not
write it out as it appears on the title page, when RDA has been stating to not
include it. If it is not written out then the record is not displaying the
proper data. But we can obviously make the choice as we wish, not to cary this
on any further, but to clarify the example that I am thinking of...

Thanks for this advice Beth. Just want to point out the distinction between an
automated catalog and an integrated library system for automating your library.
Librarything is an example of the former, but it doesn’t include modules for
computerized circulation, etc. Systems such as OPALS, cited on the AJL Wiki,
are examples of the latter.

The first consideration is cost.  I'm assuming that there are limited
resources, because that's usually the case.  If you have money, you should
interview the librarians who use the various small-library systems that are
mentioned on the wiki.

We used LibraryWorld, which is about $400/year.  If I were to start again, I
would use Librarything, which I recommend for libraries that are beginning a
project for these reasons:

1.  It is virtually free--about $25/year.  You can learn the process of
cataloging, make mistakes, change your mind, and have crises, all without a
meter running.
2.  If and when you finish the project, you will have a MARC database that is
exportable to any other system you decide to/can afford to use.

interview the librarians who use the various small-library systems that are
mentioned on the wiki.

If you mean that you're not attached via a network to other libraries, that's

I think the JSC means that every Christian denomination has a bias in favor of
its own translation or version.

It's not that they're worried about being accused of a Jewish bias.  Rather,
the term "Hebrew Bible" is meaningless in a translated, Christian version.

Anyway... I found an example. It looks like the answer is that if it is a whole
bible, it gets called Old or New testament, but if it is just a book of the
bible, like just Genesis, then it does not get called Old or New Testament.
Which still seems odd to me... So the way the RDA powerpoint slide quoted
bellow says "Multiple biases!" means that the JSC is afraid that Christians
will claim a Jewish bias if we designate a Hebrew or Jewish
version of the bible.

Rachel: regardless of your educational background in Judaism and regardless of
the denomination of your Temple, we are speaking about a librarian choice for
you organization.  It is true that both the Library of Congress and the
Melville Dewey Classification system utilize the terms Old and New Testament
but it is your library and you can choose the nomenclature which best suits
your congregation.  Simplest of all is to call the Holy Scriptures or Tenakh,
the Bible. and then to show the various portions  by their Hebrew and English

English terms and as a librarian that is a literacy service you should strive

Re: [ha-Safran] RDA and the Bible

2012-06-02 Thread Beth Dwoskin
As Andrea Rapp pointed out, Old Testament is a term that reflects explicit
Christian bias.

The change is an attempt to do away with that bias and be as neutral as
possible.

Terms like Bereshit cannot be used because RDA has an Anglocentric bias--but
that's another story.

In the interest of specificity, and at the risk of creating a
longer term, I suggest:  B'reshith/Genesis (Hebrew Bible). I like this
because it includes the Hebrew term for the book, and places the book in the
Tanakh.

Re: [ha-Safran] Hebrew vs Gregorian Calendar Dates

2012-04-05 Thread Beth Dwoskin
Here are the AACR2 rules, which most catalogers use:
For published items, give the date (i.e., year) of publication, distribution,
etc., of the edition, revision, etc., named in the edition area. If there is no
edition statement, give the date of the first publication of the edition to
which the item belongs. Give dates in Western-style arabic numerals. If the
date found in the item is not of the Gregorian or Julian calendar, give the
date as found and follow it with the year(s) of the Gregorian or Julian
calendar.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Hebrew vs Gregorian Calendar Dates

Hi Everyone,

I'm working on a project at the National Archives and we're in the process of
cataloging books with Hebrew dates (i.e., 5772).

Is there a standard way (or accepted way) to list the date, since it crosses
both 2011 and 2012? Do people:
a) Write the Hebrew date only (5772)
b) Do a range (2011-2012)
c) Pick a Gregorian date (2011 OR 2012)
d) Some combination of the three OR something completely different.

Many thanks!

Dina Herbert

Re: [ha-Safran] cataloging Sholem Aleichem

2011-12-14 Thread Beth Dwoskin
The Aleichem is not functioning as a surname.  That's why the LCNA heading is
established as Sholem Aleichem,|d 1859-1916.  There is a cross-reference from
Aleichem, Shalom that points to the established form.

The author took the phrase as a pseudonym, not another name.  It has to be
treated as a phrase.

If "Aleichem" is functioning as a surname in this name, doesn't
"Aleichem" qualify as the leading word per AACR2?  That is, "Aleichem,
Shalom," or "Aleichem, Sholom" depending on the Romanization, with
references from "Shalom Aleichem," "Sholom Aleichem" and his real name.

If you're going to use the pseudonym, it really needs to be under "Sholom". To
put it under Aleichem would be like referencing "Doody, Howdy". Sholom-aleichem
(or Sholem-aleykhem) is a fixed phrase, not a first and last name.

Re: [ha-Safran] recommendations

2011-11-29 Thread Beth Dwoskin
My point is, Madeline Kahn is NOT in the saloon scenes in The Frisco Kid,
because she's not in that movie at all.

The saloon scenes she's in are in Blazing Saddles.

Blazing Saddles is NOT a "Jewish" comedy. Mel Brooks throws in the Yiddish and
Yiddish accents but this is NOT in any way Jewish or fit for total family
viewing. Frisco Kid, on the other hand, is an EXCELLENT Jewish movie showing
devotion to Torah and mitzvot, yet there are scenes not suitable for all family
members (the saloon scenes, the desecration of the Torah, the attempted barrel
bashing of the Rabbi...)
