[ha-Safran] Gratitude - Books for Middle Grades and Teens
I'm working on a "one-sheet" bibliography of books about gratitude (HaKarat HaTov) for my religious school and am REALLY stumped when it comes to chapter books for middle-grade and teen readers. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks so much for your help. I'm looking for suggestions for books about "Teshuvah," particularly for middle-grade and young adult readers? Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm working up a list for our religious school. [ha-Safran] Books about the twelve tribes?
For religious school this fall, we're looking for materials about the Twelve Tribes of Israel, appropriate for ages 9-11. Does anyone know of anything out there that would be good for this purpose? We have a number of general Bible story books, Children's Bibles, etc., but I wondered if there was anything more specific out there that might be worth looking into. Thanks so much for your help. [ha-Safran] Lending e-books
Every once in a while, I like to check on the status of e-book lending for small libraries. We are interested in carrying them for our adults, but have yet to find a way to do this as a small congregational library. Does anyone do this at this point? Suggestions? I am not interested in e-books for the kids, which is where I see the offerings from vendors at the moment. I'm looking for Jewish titles for adults, specifically those that might not be offered from the public library here. Any chance of that? Thanks so much for your input. You are always wonderfully helpful and responsive! [ha-Safran] Magazines and Newspapers?
Does anyone carry Jewish magazines and newspapers in their libraries at this point? Is there much demand for them? If so, which ones? We're a small congregational library that hasn't carried them for several years now. We're moving into a new facility and reconsidering this. A few members have suggested that it might be nice to have a few "lying around," but otherwise there isn't much demand that I can tell. Any suggestions as to which ones to offer, or alternate electronic resources to link to, would be most welcome! [ha-Safran] Lending policy question
We are a small congregational library which is about to be part of a new "Resource Center" open to the overall Jewish community and potentially the general public. There will be a museum with various programs to attract folks into the facility. In preparation for this, we are reviewing our lending policy, which until now has been only to lend to congregation members. We would like to be able to lend to everyone to at least some extent, but we don't want to be careless with our materials. Does anyone have experience with this? What, if anything do you require of patrons in order to lend them materials? Any suggestions? As I mentioned, at the moment, we only lend to congregational members, and we have them sign something so that they know they are responsible for replacing anything that is lost. Thanks for any feedback you might have. [ha-Safran] Library ideas for Middle/High School - Young Adults?
Our small congregation is planning a new Resource Center to house our library and museum along with some social space. Of course we welcome ideas of all kinds for this, but I'm particularly interested in what we might offer for our older students. We are planning a children's section for the younger ones and have a good handle on resources and programming for them, but the older ones have us sort of stumped. Has anyone been successful drawing in these students with materials, programming, or designed spaces? We're a small congregation, thinking more on a small scale, but would like to encourage them to use the space along with the rest of the congregation. Thanks for any ideas you can offer. Re: [ha-Safran] Hasafran Digest, Vol 89, Issue 4
Wow! You guys are amazing! I love all of the ideas, and won't hesitate to read to this class! If you have any more thoughts, especially any more specific books for that group, I'd love to hear them. I especially like the idea of reading something larger over the course of a few weeks. Any thoughts on a novel that might work for this? [ha-Safran] Curriculum Suggestions for 3-5 grade?
I would like to expand our small Religious School library program to our 3-5 grade class (yes, all in the same small class) this year. I already meet for a short time with each of the younger classes - about 15 minutes each Sunday - and am planning to add a session with the older children. Since this age means moving beyond my reading stories aloud to them, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for activities, books that might work for discussion, or other ideas for what I might do with the kids. Their classes will be working with Year 5 of the CHAI curriculum. Any suggestions would be very welcome!
