Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish Short Stories for grades 1 - 3
I love sharing Jewish short stories with children! In addition to numerous picture books, there are some wonderful story collections. Here are some to get started with; not all of them will work well for the younger kids, but hopefully the teacher and kids will enjoy some of them! Chelm Stories, including but not limited to the following: - Right Side Up: Adventures in Chelm by Eric A. Kimmel - The Jar of Fools: Eight Hanukkah Stories from Chelm by Eric A. Kimmel - The Silly World of Chelm: A Treasury of Jewish Wit and Whimsy by Zalman Goldstein - Chelm for the Holidays by Valerie Estelle Frankel Other Story Collections: - The Adventures of Hershel of Ostropol by Eric A. Kimmel - Brainteasers from Jewish Folklore by Rosalind Charney Kaye - Rachel the Clever and Other Jewish Folktales by Joseph Sherman - The Diamond Tree: Jewish Tales from Around the World by Howard Schwartz et al - While Standing on One Foot: Puzzle Stories and Wisdom Tales from the Jewish Tradition by Nina Jaffe - The Uninvited Guest and Other Jewish Holiday Tales by Nina Jaffe - My Grandmother's Stories by Adele Geras - Ten Traditional Jewish Children's Stories by Gloria Goldreich Happy reading!Janice LiebermanHebrew Day School of Ann Arbor On Wednesday, August 25, 2021, 12:11:23 AM EDT, Michelle Sandler via Hasafran wrote: I am looking for Jewish Short Stories for grades 1 - 3. Re: [ha-Safran] Books on the Israel-Palestinian conflict
The Secret Grove, by Barbara Cohen, was published in 1985, so some might object to it for not being current. However, I found it to be a thoughtful, respectful account of the friendship that develops between an Israeli boy and an Arab boy. This short book (32 pages) is included in this list of upper elementary books recommended for Jewish libraries (Building a Jewish Library: Children's Books: Upper Elementary) with the following description: "Cohen, Barbara. The Secret Grove. Union of American Hebrew Congregations Press. 1985. AISN/ISBN: 0807403016.For grades 4 to 6. The tale of two boys, one Israeli, the other Arab, who meet by chance one day in an orange grove that separates their villages and learn as much about themselves as they do about each other." Re: [ha-Safran] Curriculum Suggestions for 3-5 grade?
I would not assume that the 3rd-5th graders will no longer want to have stories read to them. I am librarian at the Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor, and our3rd-5th graders are still VERY enthusiastic about listening to and discussing books that I read aloud. I share with them lots of picture books and chapter books - historical fiction, folktales, midrashim, holiday tales and more. There are many enriching and thought-provoking choices for this age group! The students love to discuss predictions, debate characters' actions, and explore lessons that can be learned. When we do other types of activities, they often ask when they'll get to hear more books, so I try to balance their desire to enjoy literature (and my desire to discuss it with them) with my need to engage them in a variety of library tasks. Perhaps your upper elementary students will be enthusiastic about listening to literature as well!Janice LiebermanLibrarianHebrew Day School of Ann ArborFrom: Etta Gold eg...@tbam.org To: "bgeph...@comcast.net" bgeph...@comcast.net; "hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu" hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu Sent: Wednesday, August 14, 2013 12:55 PM Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] Curriculum Suggestions for 3-5 grade?
