Re: [ha-Safran] Talmud sets

2019-03-28 Thread Micah Salb via Hasafran
Fred:

I would sell the Koren and Steinsaltz; they are not worth keeping in the
library. If you want to have more than one modern(ish) version, keep the
Soncino.

Contact a used book dealer. I like working with Israel Mizrahi who does a ton
of online sales. You can send him an email
(bluebird...@yahoo.com) and he will try to find
books for you. You need 22 volumes of the Schottenstein; you could buy them
new for about $750 but you could probably shave a quarter of the cost by buying
used. Note that you can buy a complete set of the Daf Yomi size for $1,600; if
your budget permits, I would recommend buying a full set and shelving them
alongside the existing volumes. That way, people can study chavera-style (if
they want to study one of the volumes that has two copies).

A little bit of the cost will be offset if you are able to sell the other
volumes, which will bring you $50 or so.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Talmud sets

I am trying to sort out the incomplete sets of the Talmud Bavli at the Koreman
Library.

We have got the Artscroll (Schottenstein) 1990 edition, lacking volumes 12, 25,
31-32, 53-54, 56-60, 62-70, and 72-73 (if there are any beyond 73, we haven’t
got them either). We have duplicate copies of volumes 33b, 47, 48, and 50.

We also have the following:

Soncino Talmud, the first 14 volumes.
Schottenstein Daf yomi edition of the Gemara, vol. 1, 22, 52, 54-56, 61.
Koren Talmud Bavli, Volumes: 1. Berakhot -- 2. Shabbat, part 1 -- 3. Shabbat,
part 2
Steinsaltz Talmud Bavli, Reference Guide and vol. 1-4.

It seems to me that the first priority should be to complete the Artscroll set,
so that we will have at least one complete Talmud Bavli in the library. I’m not
sure what to do about the others. My questions for Safranim are these:

(1) What’s the best way of completing the Artscroll set?

(2) If we were to complete a second set, which of those I’ve listed should we
choose?

(3) What should we do with duplicate volumes and sets we’re not going to
attempt to complete?

I should mention that the Koreman Library is located in the Roth Center for
Jewish Life at Dartmouth College, which serves both Dartmouth Hillel and Kol
ha'Emek, the Upper Valley Jewish Community. Dartmouth’s Baker-Berry Library is
a five-minute walk from the Roth Center, and contains the Talmudic and other
literature that one would expect to find in a major academic library. This
would reduce the necessity for the Koreman Library to collect highly secialised
material that would rarely be consulted by students and congregation members.

I would be grateful for any comments or suggestions on this.

It would be great to hear also how much money each shul spends on staff and
books for the library in addition to the source of funds. And also the number
of families and “denomination”.

Our shul is about 300 families Orthodox. We have no paid staff. Annual budget
allocation of $3,000 per year plus we keep any revenue from sale of books.

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] Hasafran Digest, Vol 338, Issue 2

Our Temple provides no regular budget for the library. We have an
all-volunteer, very-parttime staff. At times we've managed to get a little
money ear-marked for library in the annual budget to cover some recurring
costs, such as our catalog service's annual fee. And we've gotten one-time
allocations to cover special projects. Otherwise we depend upon donations to
the Library Fund, one of the categories available on the Temple's donation
page. We sometimes can sell unwanted book donations for credit at local
bookstores.

Most recently, we were very lucky to get a significant cash gift that has given
us a comfortable nest egg that will last us a few years. I think it worth
mentioning that this came through an initiative by our Temple's development
team, where they developed a "prospectus" of gift opportunities to use with
targeted "asks." I heard about this plan and wrote a proposal for the library,
describing the backlog of books we had on our wishlist and how much money we'd
need to put us on a good footing. The development team found a donor who liked
our proposal and we got the funding.

To answer a question from a board member about other synagogue libraries’
sources of funding, we would greatly appreciate a few words from you at other
synagogues, as to where yours comes from. Are you given funding by the
synagogue, or do you rely on contributions to a designated fund among the
choices for donors? Both? Do you use another source entirely? We are only
just beginning to build our library from a small collection and space, and are
just starting to ask – and be asked – such questions. (Ohev Sholom, DC)

I use Surpass in my library but our patrons are able to log on to our catalog
on their phone or computer by using a new account I created through
LibraryThing called TinyCat. The TinyCat feature is more like a library
data-base and more library friendly for patrons than the original LibraryThing
which is used by me for data entry. Here is a link to our library account so
you can see how it works. Temple members can see the new books as they are
accessioned, find my reviews, and actually reserve a book through this link.

[ha-Safran] FS: Complete Set of Neusner's Talmud of the Land of Israel

2017-05-16 Thread Micah Salb
Colleagues:
Our library is deaccessioning a set of Rabbi Neusner's Talmud of the Land of
Israel, published by the University of Chicago Press.
This 35-volume set has both champions and critics but it is one of few English
versions of the Yerushalmi and it reflects a great deal of scholarship.
Most volumes are in As-New, Fine, or Near-Fine condition; a few are in Very
Good condition, and one is in Good condition (but it is one of the volumes
which took years to find). While some of the volumes are found easily, others
are extremely scarce. Even the University of Chicago Press no longer has all
volumes (and their prices are not particularly attractive).
We have priced this at $1,850, which is a significant discount from the cost of
purchasing the volumes separately. (I have never seen a complete set for
sale.) Shipping in the continental U.S. is included.
I would not normally post a For Sale notice on this list-serv (and I hope I am
not violating any rules in doing so!), but because of the scarcity of this set
and the centrality of the Yerushalmi in a Jewish library, I thought it worth
sharing.

[ha-Safran] Shelf Spacer Blocks?

2017-02-15 Thread Micah Salb
Folks:

We have shelves that are not full but for which a bookend would not be
warranted. I would like to have blocks of varying thicknesses to add to those
shelves to fill in the shelf so that the books stay upright. We planned to
make those. I envisioned buying cardboard precut, say 9" x 6", and made into
stacks---some 1", some 2", some 3", etc.---and then wrapped with brown kraft
paper, like a present.

But I haven't been able to find suitable cardboard, card stock, chipboard, or
backer board of suitable size and thickness at a modest price.

Does anyone have a supplier, or a better idea of how to make these?

Thanks.

[ha-Safran] ABOLISH TU B'SHVAT!!!

2017-01-31 Thread Micah Salb
Colleagues:

It turns out that we are wrong, wrong, wrong in celebrating Tu B'shvat! There
is no such holiday. In fact, we should be championing Tu Bishvat!

Re: [ha-Safran] Books in a Mikveh

2016-12-13 Thread Micah Salb
Thanks so much to the folks who responded to my inquiry. Fortunately, we are
able to keep the books in a separate room (albeit within the mikveh suite), but
because the books are intended for casual use and not part of our regular
library collection, we will monitor them and replace any volumes that show
signs of damage.

[ha-Safran] Bibliography of Seforim?

2016-12-13 Thread Micah Salb
Folks:

Our library seeks English-language or Hebrew/English bibliographies, preferably
with annotations and/or descriptions, of Seforim. Does anyone know of any?

Thanks.

[ha-Safran] Books in a Mikveh

2016-12-12 Thread Micah Salb
Folks:

Our shul's mikveh is building a small library and they are, understandably,
worried about the effect of humidity on the books. Does anyone have any ideas
about how to keep the books from getting too damaged too quickly?
