[ha-Safran] Getting Rid of 1, 500 Used Judaica Books for Adults Where?
Happy Hanukkah: I am getting rid of half of my Reform Synagogue Library. The Library room is needed for a Youth Lounge/Classroom/Meeting Room. I have 1,500 adult Judaica books to get rid of. Most of the books were published pre ISBN. I live in Southern California an hour from Los Angeles. Where do I take them to be donated or where can I sell them cheaply? I am not necessarily looking for payment, just a way not to have to put them in the dumpster. They are sitting in a storage shed at the synagogue and the space is needed for other things. I have already tried the Jewish Federation of Orange County and the one in Long Beach, the Jewish Community Center of Orange County, and the one in Long Beach. Heritage Point Jewish Home for the Aged in Orange County. Lastly, the Jewish Studies Department at the University of California in Irvine. All of these locations have turned me down. [ha-Safran] Reference Books about places in the old country
Dear RAS Librarians: Jewish Genealogists have been asking for books with historical information about Jewish communities in Eastern Europe. I am looking for a comprehensive list of books like Yizkor books and Pinkas Hakihilot that talk about towns in the old country. I know of all the Jewish encyclopedia sets, Where Once We Walked 2nd edition. I have access to a comprehensive list of Yizkor books on JewishGen. All books in any language excepted. I want to make a comprehensive list for my role as head of Jewish Genealogy libraries for the International Association of Jewish Genealogy Societies. Re: [ha-Safran] Accreditation
Dear Rachel: I am registered for the convention. I went to Woodland Hills in 2019 and Virtual last year. I have been in AJL since 1994-2000 and 2009-2021. Because of COVID19 the Library has been closed. I have never had a library program at my synagogue. My helper and I automated the Library from 2013 - 2017. 2,500 volumes that had been cataloged years and years ago but never automated or searchable in any form. We then cataloged the 1,000 book collection of our Religious School library collection which had been a mess and never touched before. I will have to come up with Library programs for my Reform Synagogue, which I have never done. I am a retired solo Librarian 2000 - 2012 from a Career College Library in Anaheim California. I worked very part time as a Reform Synagogue Librarian at a synagogue in Newport Beach California from 1994 to 2001. We held no library programs as I spent all my time building the library. I volunteered as a part time Solo Librarian 1993 - 2,000 for a K-6 Jewish Day School In Aliso Viejo California with 5,000 volumes mostly donated Disney and non Judaica for children. I spent all my time building the library. I also volunteered on a committee to build a library for a local JCC 1992 - 1994.. I was the only Librarian on the committee. I have never done any library programming for any Judaica Library. I have done bibliographic instruction for students and classes at the career college. [ha-Safran] Newer Information on How to Build a Jewish Genealogy Library
Dear Judaica Librarians: I have just registered for the all access pass to the IAJGS virtual convention. I have been doing Jewish Genealogy for 37 years. I signed up to be a mentor at the convention. One of the two topics I signed up to mentor in is How to Build and Manage a Jewish Genealogy Library. I am the Librarian of the Orange County California Jewish Genealogy Society. We have 215 books all organized in LC in my garage shelving. I am also a synagogue Librarian. I have a copy of the Jewish Library Handbook. Is there anything more current than this book which came out a few years ago? I want to give Jewish Genealogy Society Librarians something newer to take a look at. I have been in the Library world since 1988. I got my MLS from San Jose State University at California State University Fullerton in 1993 at their outreach program. [ha-Safran] Organization for Jewish children's books in small Reform Synagogue Library
My reform synagogue library has 2,300 books in it. 450 of them are Jewish children's books. I just finished automating the collection in Resource Mate. It is now time to finish the organizing. The children's books were originally organized by category. They also had some Elazar numbers on them. I changed the system so they are now organized by Elazar number. The Religious School Director has asked me to pull out all the Jewish books for children on an upcoming holiday right before the holiday so she can share them with faculty to use in their classrooms. Sorting by Elazar number makes it harder to find both the fiction and non fiction on a particular holiday. Should I switch it back to organizing by category or keep it as it is?
