[Haskell-cafe] duplicate type signatures

Dear all,

why is this allowed (GHCi, version 7.4.1):

main :: IO ()

  a = 5
  print a

but this not:

main :: IO ()
main = do
  let a :: Int
  a :: Int

Is there a deeper sens or is it just a little bit inconsistent?

I realized my algorithm is insane. The correct way to sort [a*b|a-A,

either map (a*) B or map (a*) (reverse B), depending on the sign of
a,

then merge all these results together with a merge that collapses
duplicates. I was multiplying and then sorting, which is way worse.
The same (modulo sign) goes for adding lists.

[Haskell-cafe] types and number of evaluation steps

2012-02-18 Thread Heinrich Hördegen

Dear all,

I have a question about evaluation with respect to types and currying.
Consider this programm:

import Debug.Trace

-- add :: Integer - Integer - Integer
add :: Int - Int - Int
add x y = x + y

f a b c = trace b (add x c) where x = trace a (add a b)

main :: IO ()
main = do
  print (f 1 2 3)
  print (f 1 2 4)

Compiled with ghc-7.0.3:

$ ghc --make Main.hs -o main -O2

The function add has to types. When we use type Int - Int - Int, the
programm produces b a 6 b a 7 as output which shows that the x from
the where clause in f is evaluated twice. However, when we use type
Integer - Integer - Integer, this will give b a 6 b 7 which shows
that x is evaluated only once. This was rather unexpected to me.

Why does the number of evaluation steps depend on a type? Can anybody
explain this or give a hint?

Thank you very much,
Heinrich

In case of +, the reason might be that it's cheap, but the function add

Re: [Haskell-cafe] Reminder Munich Haskell

2011-10-28 Thread Heinrich Hördegen

 Hi Ertugrul,

sorry for the late answer, somehow I missed this message. For anyone who
is interested:

Our meeting in Munich last Wednesday went very well. We've been 14
persons, it startet at 19h30 and continued until after 23h00 with lively
discussions. Our next meeting will be at Tue, 29 Nov 2011
(www.haskell-munich.de).

We would appreciate, if more people from outside Munich could join us,
but I understand if it is too far.

May I ask how the evening went? I would love to join, but it's just too
far away from here (Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart) for work days.

Greets,
Ertugrul

[Haskell-cafe] Munich Haskell Meeting

2011-10-05 Thread Heinrich Hördegen

Dear all,

last Thursday's get-together for Haskell users in Munich was a success.
About 12 people meet at Cafe Puck where we spent a nice evening. The
overall opinion was, that gatherings of this kind should be held on a
more regular basis. Therefore, I'd like to announce the following page:

http://www.haskell-munich.de

If you can make it to Munich, please feel invited to join us at one of
the given dates. We would highly appreciate your company.

If you have suggestions about the page or anything else, please contact me.

Have a nice day,
Heinrich

[Haskell-cafe] Question Formlets, file upload

2011-08-09 Thread Dr. Heinrich Hördegen

 Dear all,

I am using the library Text.XHtml.Strict.Formlets to build a validating
form. I use the function file to get a file upload widget. The
encoding is set to multipart. I want to check, if the user entered
something or left the widget empty. However, when entering nothing,
instead of an empty string, I always get a string like /tmp/12101
which corresponds to an empty file.

It would be nice, if I could check for the empty string to see, weather
the user entered something or not into the upload widget.

I appreciate any hints to achive this and wish you a good day,
Heinrich

[Haskell-cafe] Munich functional programmers' UG

2011-04-14 Thread Dr. Heinrich Hördegen

 Dear all,

last week, there have been thoughts to create a user group for
functional programmers in Munich, Germany. People who are interessted
can join the new mailing list:

http://www.fs.lmu.de/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/high-order-munich

The idea is to have meetings every now and then with talks on aspects of
functional programming. However, it's not restricted to Haskell. Please
spread the word to anyone who could be interested.

Thank you,
Heinrich
