 I am also +1 for this. Looks nice to see this in the hadoop tool. I didn't see 
the doc of the Dynamometer, we need to document this to let more users know 
more of this tool.

Thanks [~jojochuang], that's a great catch. I changed it to the 24-hour 
timestamp by default (using 12-hour was a typo on my part), and made all of 
that parsing logic configurable to accommodate potentially different audit log 
formats. v008 patch attached.

I think it's good. I've taken part of the code to develop a KMS audit replay 
tool and helped us debug a tricky issue.

The only thing I noticed is that the Dynamometer audit replay tool assumes 
NameNode audit log format is in 12-hour format, UTC time.

Attached v007 patch which:
* Adds assumptions about not running on Windows (thanks [~elgoiri]!) and also 
about the environment (presence of {{JAVA_HOME}} and {{tar}})
* Add some more proactive cleanup logic for old test directories lying around. 
They're cleaned in the {{@AfterClass}} block, but if you exit the test early, 
they build up and can consume a lot of space. Now it deletes any old ones when 
the test starts
* Fixed the two javac deprecation warnings and the EOL whitespace issues
* Did not touch the whitespace tab warnings as they are expected (its a copy of 
the audit log which contains tabs)
* Fixed the two shelldocs issues and nearly all of the shellcheck issues
* Fixed nearly all checkstyle issues

Thanks for the updated patch! [~xkrogen] There is a [Tar for 
Windows|http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/gtar.htm] but it's under GNU 
so I'm not sure if this is the way to go. I believe we could just disable the 
unit test on Windows for now.

I'm attaching a v006 patch which clears up the remaining javac warnings, fixes 
the shelldocs and javadocs issues, fixes most of the remaining checkstyle 
warnings, fixes most of the shellcheck issues, fixes whitespace issues, removes 
a few usages of {{commons.logging}} in favor of {{slf4j}}, removes use of 
private YARN APIs within {{ApplicationMaster}}, and puts a timeout on the main 
integration test.

I considered trying to fold {{SimulatedDataNodes}} into {{DataNodeCluster}}, 
but I think I would prefer to leave it as a follow-on item. For now, this patch 
is completely isolated to new code within the 
{{hadoop-tools/hadoop-dynamometer}} submodule (besides a few changes to build 
and assembly files), and I would prefer to keep it that way. Merging SDN into 
DNC should remove the last of the burden of private API usage.

Two things I noticed while going through this pass that I would like to discuss:
* This currently includes a class to allow Dynamometer to be run via Azkaban. 
This is very useful for us internally, but may not make much sense to have 
within Hadoop. Unless I hear another opinion, I will probably remove this in a 
subsequent patch.
* Currently, {{TestDynamometerInfra}} requires {{bash}} and {{tar}} to be 
present on the PATH, so it will fail on Windows. I'd like to remove the 
reliance on {{tar}} completely, but I think it will be a bit more tricky, so I 
think it would be reasonable to simply disable building Dynamometer on Windows 
for now. I'm curious if anyone knows how to achieve this -- [~smeng] ? It seems 
it should be possible through some POM magic.

Hey [~daryn], thanks for raising some valid concerns.

Regarding the use of private APIs, they are pretty limited. On the YARN side, 
there's a few now within the ApplicationMaster simply because it is copied from 
the example of DistributedShell which also makes use of such private APIs; I'm 
happy to fix those before pushing. On the HDFS side, I believe the only use of 
private APIs is within the {{SimulatedDataNodes}} class, which does some 
manipulation to inject blocks into a {{MiniDFSCluster}}. Given that 
{{DataNodeCluster}} does something very similar, I would expect any changes in 
this area to be handled very similarly and not be much extra maintenance 
burden. If there is a desire, I can probably combine {{SimulatedDataNodes}} and 
{{DataNodeCluster}} so that any maintenance would only be in one place; IIRC, 
the main reason I did not do so already is that besides the actual block 
injection, most code within {{DataNodeCluster}} is devoted to deciding how to 
generate all of the blocks, whereas {{SimulatedDataNodes}} reads its blocks 
from an already-generated listing. But I can look into combining them.

Regarding maintenance burden, I guess most of the tools within {{hadoop-tools}} 
are "non-essential" maintenance burdens. I think [~smeng]'s idea of disabling 
compilation by default is interesting, but I worry that this would increase the 
chance that it falls out of sync with the main project and becomes even harder

[~daryn] IMHO one solution would be not compiling and packaging Dynamometer by 
default, which can be easily done in maven (set profile activeByDefault to 
false). So developers won't need to worry about changing the tool every time 
they want to change APIs, while we can fix it as it is needed.
On the usage of private APIs though, would you like to add anything [~xkrogen]?

I like the concept of Dynamometer but I don't have cycles to review.  I do have 
general concerns about whether it should be part of the already bloated hadoop 
project proper, or more importantly how we plan to maintain it going forward?  
How much of a burden might it place on the community to support a non-essential 
tool?

A cursory skim of comments seem to indicate use of private apis which gives me 
pause.  How extensive are the use of private apis?  Essentially my concern is 
if the tool will place a heavy burden on developers that change private hdfs 
internals, only to find it's incompatible with the tool, lack the expertise to 
"fix" the tool and spend substantial time attempting to fix it, or worse, 
compromising a design change to accommodate a tool using private apis...

Thanks for the additional help, [~linyiqun]! Please make sure that for any 
future patches you produce, you use the {{--binary}} flag, so that it will 
apply correctly.

I just put up a v005 patch which clears up a lot of the checkstyle, and some of 
the deprecation warnings.

I don't really feel having multiple submodules is an issue. 

As an example,
hadoop-yarn has:
hadoop-yarn-project --> hadoop-yarn --> hadoop-yarn-applications --> 
hadoop-yarn-application-catalog

Maintaining the mult-submodules makes it easier to port the "upstream" 
dynamometer fixes into the Hadoop codebase too.

# Although I'm not a big fan of Hadoop's 80 character limit, I think it makes 
sense to at least force this code base down to 80 characters before we commit 
it. Otherwise the style is not so different, but this is a significant 
deviation that will make it so every new commit on Dynamometer will have 
checkstyle warnings.
# I think if it is going to go into a single submodule, we should do this 
before committing the first version.

For documentation getting into the correct place for the site, I think this is 
very important, but can easily be done as a follow-up. I think the two items I 
mentioned will be significantly more annoying as follow-ons than something done 
from the start.

I skimmed through the various warnings from the last precommit output, and i 
don't think any of it is critical. Given the size of the patch, I'd want to 
have this patch in the codebase sooner, and then iterate on the warnings in 
follow-up jiras. Thoughts?

I wanted to propose this approach because Dynamometer is a tool rather than a 
core part of HDFS, and it is not designed as a production tool (so my bar for 
the code style is lower), and I think it'll benefit from faster iterations 
(similar to the argument of Submarine being a Hadoop sub-project).

Hm. I wonder if it even makes sense for MiniDFSCluster to depend on JUnit... 
Anyway, I solved this problem in the GitHub repo by specifying JUnit as a 
[compile-time 
dependency|https://github.com/xkrogen/dynamometer/blob/ekrogen-hadoop-3-support/dynamometer-infra/build.gradle#L8].
 This works even for the tarball since the tarball is set to [include all of 
the non-Hadoop runtime 
dependencies|https://github.com/linkedin/dynamometer/blob/master/build.gradle#L100].
 I'm not sure how to achieve the equivalent in Maven...

We might have a little dependency issue here on JUnit.
I noticed that in the trunk (3.3.0), junit jar has been removed from the Hadoop 
tarball at some point (it was under ./share/hadoop/mapreduce/lib/junit-4.11.jar 
in Hadoop 3.2.1 and before).
Since dynamometer-infra uses MiniDFSCluster that depends on JUnit, we won't be 
able to run dynamometer-infra jar in trunk. It can still be compiled, just not 
included in the distribution tarball.
I've tried to add junit jar back under somewhere in the tarball like 
./share/hadoop/tools/lib/ but no luck so far. Question: is maven 
"copy-dependencies" the right way to do it? Need some help here.

I fixed two small issues when applying rev 000 patch to my local trunk and 
compiling it.
1. fsimage_0061740 is binary, content of which is not included in 
patch rev 000. I grabbed the file 
[here](https://github.com/xkrogen/dynamometer/raw/ekrogen-hadoop-3-support/dynamometer-infra/src/test/resources/hadoop_3_1/fsimage_0061740)
 and generated the patch with "git diff --binary"
