Thanks [~elgoiri]! Great suggestions. I have applied them all in the v012 
patch. I added a whole new test class {{TestWeightedTimeCostProvider}}, 
enhanced the existing test within {{TestDecayRpcScheduler}}, and added two 
additional test cases there. I also added a whole new documentation block 
within {{FairCallQueue.md}}.

I wanted to double check that this was not already in the air.

Regarding this JIRA itself, I have a couple minor comments:
* The location of {{applyWeights()}} in {{ProcessingDetails}} is a little 
dangerous; should we make sure that weight and timing are the same size? I'm 
not sure the {{applyWeights()}} naming is the most intuitive either. It looks 
more like a {{getCost()}}. I would actually just move the full code to 
{{WeightedTimeCostProvider}}. Not sure it adds much value to add it to 
{{ProcessingDetails}}.
* Do we want to add a couple unit tests with corner cases? Like having no 
requests, etc?
* Use logger format for the logs (using {}).
* Use lambda for the {{GenericTestUtils#waitFor()}}.
* I would add some high level text about the cost based approach not only 
describing the fields but describing what the goal is and how one would use it 
and set it up "end to end"-ish.

I would really love to review this one, looks interesting. But CDH didn't 
support fair call queue historically, so I am afraid I may not be able to offer 
the best opinions.

Hey [~elgoiri], interesting question... I haven't heard of any such work and we 
don't have any plans for that from our side. I don't think we've experienced 
issues with that, or at least, if we have we haven't noticed.

Are you guys aware of any work to do something similar for the Datanodes?
We used to be pretty bad with the Namenodes but with the fair queue and a 
couple improvements, we are in pretty good shape there now.
However, now we have a couple users triggering thousands of reads from a single 
block and they overload the DNs.
Is there any effort on doing some fairness for the xceivers in a DN?
The architecture of the xceivers is not as clean as the regular Hadoop RPC 
server used by the NN.

We agree that in our environment as well, we'll probably need to add special 
handling for service accounts. After adding the general cost-based FCQ, we were

The latest patch v11 LGTM. +1. Although keep in mind that I'm not a committer 
so probably better if someone else could give a stamp on this as well. :)

One extension of this is useful for us: in our environment, we have a few 
service user accounts who tend to issue lot more requests (including writes) 
than other normal user accounts. Because of this, we don't want to treat these 
special service accounts the same as the rest. Not sure what's a good solution 
to this at the moment. Perhaps in future the CostProvider can also be user 
identity aware and have different behavior accordingly.

Thanks [~xkrogen] for updating the patch. Overall I think it looks good. Some 
minor comments:
1. I see that we can associate a namespace with each {{CostProvider}}. Does 
that mean we can have different {{CostProvider}} configurations for different 
nameservices in a single config, or it is a different thing?
2. Not sure if we should include {{COST}} in the {{Timing}} enum - seems it is 
not used anywhere?
3. {{DecayedRpcScheduler#computePriorityLevel}} - should we replace the 
parameter {{occurrences}} with something like {{costs}}?
4. {{DecayedRpcScheduler#getAndIncrementCost}} - perhaps {{getAndAddCost}} fits 
better for this. Also, I'm not sure if the comment {{@return the value before 
incrementation}} is accurate, is it "after"? the returned value is not used 
anywhere also.
5. {{DecayedRpcScheduler#parseCostProvider}} - in case there are multiple 
{{CostProvider}}s configured, can we log which one is picked?
6. nit: multiple classes contain double blank lines after the import clause. We 
should only keep a single line?

Just attached v009 patch. The v008 -> v009 changes are:
* Fix 1 checkstyle and 2 whitespace issues
* Fix a bug in the config parsing within {{WeightedTimeCostProvider}} where the 
prefix was not included in the config key
* Change "count" to "cost" where appropriate within {{DecayRpcScheduler}}. This 
bloats the patch a lot, so if anyone new tries to review, I suggest starting 
with v008 as the logic changes are more easily accessible.

Thanks a lot for the review [~csun]. These are all great points! I updated 
documentation in {{FairCallQueue.md}}, fixed all of the failing tests, added a 
new test case for this within {{TestDecayRpcScheduler}}, and addressed your 
comment (3). While adding the new test I realized the configuration wasn't 
properly getting passed into {{WeightedTimeCostProvider}}; this is now fixed. 
Within {{TestRPC}} to fix the tests, I had to separate the metrics assertions 
out of {{testClientBackOffByResponseTime}} and into a new test -- they didn't 
seem related to the rest of the test case (looked a bit at the commit history 
as well and they were added later on), and because a client which receives a 
backoff request will no longer end up in the call volume metrics, it was 
failing.

The one thing I didn't yet do is update "count" to "cost"... Want to give you a 
chance to do a final review before I make the name change which will inflate 
the diff size. All of the above is in the v008 patch.

Thanks [~xkrogen]. Overall this looks good to me. A few comments:
1. Yes agree that the mixing of "cost" and "count" in {{DecayRpcScheduler}} is 
a little confusing. We should change them to use the former in all places 
(including comments).
2. Should we add a few tests for this?
3. In {{cachedOrComputedPriorityLevel}}, can we move the line 
{{List costList}} and the one following it right before "// Cache 
was no good, compute it", making them closer to the use site.
4. We also need to document the newly added configuration keys (e.g., 
{{ipc..cost-provider}}).

Now that HADOOP-16266 has been committed, we can resume progress here. I've 
attached a v007 patch based on top of the HADOOP-16266 changes. One thing I 
haven't done yet is change the variable names inside of {{DecayRpcScheduler}} 
-- all of the {{callCount}} references need to be changed to {{callCost}}. I 
think this will make it a bit harder to review, so I'll wait until folks have 
time to do a first pass.

Thanks [~cgregori]. I like the way how these two patches getting combined 
(except that we should split them into two parts). A few comments on the patch 
v5:
 - In {{ProcessingDetails}}, when is {{ENQUEUE}} be set?
 - In {{ProcessingDetails}}, should we use nano seconds as the default time 
unit as oppose to micro seconds? 
 - In {{RpcMetrics}}, the {{@Metric}} for lock wait time should be "Lock wait 
time", not "Processing time".
 - In {{Server#updateMetrics}}, we don't really need to pass in {{timestamp}} - 
it can be obtained from {{call}}.
 - In {{DecayRpcScheduler#addResponseTime}} and a few other places we are 
casting long to int and then back to long later. It's better if we can just use 
long all the way.
 - We should update the doc for {{DecayRpcScheduler#getAndIncrementCost}} to 
reflect the new changes.
 - We need class level comments for {{ProcessingDetails}} to explain what it is 
for.
 - nit: better to align the comments on {{ProcessingDetails.Timing}}.
 - nit: we don't need a {{VALUES}} static field in {{ProcessingDetails.Timing}} 
- can just use {{Timing.values()}}.
 - We'll need to add documentation for new config parameters used in 
{{WeightedTimeCostProvider}}. 
 - We'll need some tests for the patch.

I think I have to agree with [~csun]'s suggestion of splitting this up, as it 
is pretty large, and does appear to contain two somewhat unrelated ideas. 
[~cgregori] would you mind creating a new JIRA for adding more fine-grained 
processing time metrics to the RPC layer?

A few smaller comments:
* I don't really think we should suddenly change the RPC processing time 
metrics to micros... I'm worried this might break things that rely on those 
metrics. cc [~jojochuang] for an opinion on that. Maybe this needs to be 
configurable?
* The {{RpcScheduler}} interface isn't {{@InterfaceAudience.Private}}, so we 
should probably maintain compatibility by adding a {{default}} implementation 
of the new method which falls back to calling the old one.
* You have a few static imports which appear at the top of the import list, but 
they should go at the bottom.
* It seems we don't need to include the {{isResponseDeferred}} argument to 
{{updateMetrics}}, since the {{Call}} object is passed in, we can call that 
directly. Same for {{timestamp}} and {{processed}}. You also removed a valuable 
comment where {{callQueue.take()}} is called.
* The {{methodName}} stuff is a bit messy. At some points in the current patch, 
"methodName" will even store the class name of an exception.
  * One thing we could do to clean it up a little is, at the start of the two 
{{RpcInvoker#call()}} methods, store the value of {{Server.getCurCall()}} and 
immediately set the method name. It seems more sensible to me to at least set 
the method name at the start, instead of at the very end. Then, we can remove 
the {{finally}} blocks entirely, and call {{call.setMethodName()}} again within 
the {{catch}} block if necessary. This makes the flow a little cleaner (I 
think) but doesn't fix the fact that "methodName" stores other things. 
  * One other approach I investigated was trying to get the method name within 
{{Server#processRpcRequest()}}, directly where the {{RpcCall}} is being 
instantiated. We already have some protobuf-specific processing there, so 
perhaps we can piggyback off of it. Then, maybe we can reuse 
{{RpcCall.responseParams.errorClass}} to differentiate the name used for 
processing time within {{updateMetrics}}. We might need to play around with 
this a bit.

Popped up a new patch: combined the two approaches somewhat, moving the actual 
calculation of a cost from the {{ProcessingDetails}} to a {{CostProvider}} 
instead. Also restored a bit of logic that determined a {{detailedMetricsName}} 
to pass to {{updateMetrics}}, now stores that name on the {{Call}} instead (not 
sure if this is the best approach). Ready for more reviews!

[~daryn], your patch looks very good. It simplified the codes a lot and support 
more type times. You put lots of logic in IPC layer not in HDFS module, This 
can be reused by other module as well.

Looking through two approaches, we can reuse cost provider definition to return 
cost value. That can make this more pluggable to use rather than directly 
calculating cost value in class. For the actual cost calculation, process 
details based approach seems a more better way.

Very astute! :)  I initially shorted out the update on queue insertion but 
later figured it was ok to charge the user a tiny amount since readers can 
reject the call (call queue overflow, etc) and that load isn't "free" 
especially if the abusive user is flooding the NN.

Thanks for sharing [~daryn]! It looks like the patch is built on top of a few 
custom things deviating from branch-2.8, but nothing looks significant. A 
rebase to make it easily apply would be appreciated.

It looks like the major difference in design decision was to make all of this a 
first-class concept within the IPC layer, whereas we approached it from keeping 
most of the lock-specific code within the HDFS module. Your approach ends up 
being a bit cleaner since, as a member of the IPC layer, it can be more 
directly integrated and avoids some of the tricks we had to do, like making the 
NameNode reach into the Server to set its own {{CostProvider}} implementation. 
Our YARN folks have recently been complaining about lock synchronization within 
the RM, so it may be that having this mechanism be general would be beneficial 
to them also. cc [~jhung] to see if there may be interest in building support 
for such functionality into the RM.

You also make static/ThreadLocal access to the {{Call}} object, something I'm 
not really fond of and that we tried to avoid in our patch, but it is 
interesting to see just how much simpler this made things by storing the 
response time in the {{Call}} object itself rather than maintaining an 
independent map of usernames that had to be kept in sync with the corresponding 
map in {{DecayRpcScheduler}}. Given that {{Server}} already maintains the call 
context and exposes it for use, it seems it may be worth it to leverage it here 
to reduce the complexity.

I would love to get some feedback from others on the two approaches -- looks 
like there are quite a few watchers so hopefully some will chime in :)

Two specific comments I want to make while I am thinking about them, to ensure 
I don't forget them if we decide to move forward with your patch:
* Regarding the {{scheduler instanceof DecayRpcScheduler}} comment, it doesn't 
seem to me that disrupting the interface would be a bad thing. We can add a 
{{default}} implementation to maintain backwards compatibility and mark the old 
version of {{addProcessingTime}} as deprecated.
* In {{DecayRpcScheduler}}, if you enable the cost-based version, you still 
make use of the counter-based version ({{getAndIncrementCallCounts()}}, so the

incorporating elements from both patches.  My splicing wasn't quite as abstract 
as this one.  Notables and cheats:
* {{CallQueueManager}}: Cheated by using {{scheduler instanceof 
DecayRpcScheduler}} to avoid disrupting the interface.
* {{DecayRpcScheduler}}: Hijacked the "*CallCount" variables to be either count 
or cost.
* {{Protobuf/WritableRpcEngine}}: Hoisted redundant metrics update into server 
to allowed finer-grain breakdown.
** Dropped bizarre metric update that recorded failed calls as their exception. 
 Always complicated historical trend analysis of call load or which op was 
being flooded.
* {{Server}}: metrics tweaks
** Skipped calls from disconnected client are no longer billed as near-zero 
processing time – it worse the backlog, the better processing used to look.
** Add lock wait metric.
** Normal metric for processing time still includes lock wait.
** Detailed per op processing time does not include lock wait.  Can finally do 
production load analysis of call expense!
* {{RpcMetrics}}: changed timeunits to microseconds because milliseconds 
accuracy is near worthless.  probably/maybe should be configurable.
* {{FSNamesystemLock}}: callback feels a little clunky but most performant I

I've got a simpler and more robust patch I'll try to cleanup/put up today for 
consideration. It lacks specific tests but has more accurate and fine grained 
tracking of time w/o a lot of new data structures.  The existing decay 
scheduler can be toggled to use a cost instead of call count.  It tracks 
timings for:
 * reader enqueue
 * in queue
 * processing
 ** handler overhead
 ** invoke
 *** lock free
 *** lock wait
 *** lock shared

Thanks for the comments and suggestions! Patch 002 should fix up those tests 
and the checkstyle warnings, as well as address [~xkrogen]'s suggestions: I 
built upon those by switching to using a {{LongAdder}} in the internal 
{{UserLockHoldTime}} class instead of an {{AtomicLong}}, and chose to use 5 as 
the default write time multiplier.

I approached [~linyiqun]'s second suggestion by changing the 
{{DecayRpcProvider}} to update from the {{CostProvider}} on each call only when 
there isn't a value in the cache, and keeping the update on decay sweep: I 
believe this is a good compromise in minimizing contention on the 
{{FSNamesystemLock}}'s {{userLockTimes}} while still keeping the totals up to 
date for new users. Let me know if there's a reason I'm not thinking of where 
updating every call is preferable :)

[~cgregori], thanks for getting us started with the v001 patch! Besides fixing 
the checkstyle and test failures (at least TestHdfsConfigFields and TestRPC 
look related, you should check the others also), I have a few comments:
* {{DecayRpcScheduler#decayCurrentCounts()}} -- you changed this from 
{{private}} to {{package-private}}, should it have a {{@VisibleForTesting}} 
annotation?
* For {{DecayRpcScheduler#getCallCost()}}, now seems like a good time to remove 
the {{throws InterruptedException}} (it doesn't) and to fix the Javadoc 
formatting by adding a blank line before the {{@param}} tag.
* The Javadoc change for {{computePriorityLevel()}} is a bit confusing; it made 
me think that the {{cost}} argument was the total cost across all users' 
operations (i.e. {{totalDecayedCallCost}}). Can you make it more clear that it 
is the total cost for a specific user?
* It doesn't seem that {{getPriorityLevelAndUpdate()}} is a useful function to 
have just for testing, when a test could call the two existing methods 
{{getPriorityLevel()}} and {{updateFromCostProvider()}}. Can we remove it?
* I think a default value of {{DFS_NAMENODE_LOCKCOSTPROVIDER_WRITEMULTIPLIER}} 
of higher than 1 probably makes sense, maybe 5 or 10?
* The two new methods on {{FSNamesystem}} that don't have Javadoc should get 
it. It would also be helpful if you could add Javadoc to the 
{{FSNamesystemLock#userLockTimes}} field explaining how it works.
* I'm not sure if I like the method name {{removeUserLockTimes()}}, maybe 
something like {{stopTrackingUserLockTimes()}} would be better?
* Within {{FSNamesystemLock}}, the lock hold times are stored within a 
{{List}}. I know this is how it's done within 
{{DecayRpcScheduler}}, but I'm not really a fan, as it's confusing upon first 
glance about what it actually contains. My personal preference would be to 
create a private inner class that has two {{AtomicLong}} fields, but let me 
know if you disagree.
* For the {{addCallQueueConfigurationCallback}} method, since we are on Java 8, 
we should take advantage of the built-in {{Consumer}} functional interface 
rather than using Guava.
* Within the callback created within {{NameNodeRpcServer}}, I'm thinking we 
should probably call {{namesystem.setUserLockTimeCollection(false)}} if the new 
{{scheduler}} does not have a {{LockCostProvider}} so that the collection will 
be disabled if the RPC scheduler is no longer using this.
* For the {{testUser(Read|Write)HoldTimes}} tests, I think the {{spy}} makes 
sense to mock out multiple users. But for the other two tests, with only one 
user, can we avoid the spy by just saying {{user1 = 
fsLock.getCurrentUsername()}} ?


[~starphin] - thanks for taking a look! Are you requesting information on what 
the total QPS for the abusive user (1000 entry listStatus) and the non-abusive 
users (1 entry listStatus or mkdir) was in each of the benchmarks? I think we 
should be able to supply this -- [~cgregori] we should be able to collect these 
from the Dynamometer results?

Can you give a detailed information about how much listStatus on a directory 
with one subdirectories and listStatus on a directory with 1000 subdirectories 
in your benckmark tests? Is it possible that scheduler with LockCostProvider 
schedules more low cost operations like listStatus on a directory with one 
subdirectories, which results in a lower queue time. Or it makes sense for 
LockCostProvider.

I moved this to the HDFS project as I remembered that this has HDFS-specific 
components. Fully specced out design document, and initial patch, coming in the 
next few days.
