[~hexiaoqiao] good idea

may be it still need to get current time twice:

1. before calculate {{end}} time, this can avoid sleep more long time than
expect

2. before delete/create checkpoint loop, this can check current time with end
time.

He Xiaoqiao commented on HDFS-14586:

Thanks [~huyongfa] for your detailed comments again. IIUC, you try to correct
the current time using the method {{floor}} both at {{Emptier}} thread and
{{deleteCheckpoint}} to smooth time cost by {{deleteCheckpoint}}. Thus one
checkpoint path may be deleted which should be delete next time at some corner
case, right? Of course, I agree that it is not serious issue.
Sorry about that I do not express clearer above. I suggest that we could get
the current time once then used it anywhere when need to get the current time,
for instance {{createCheckpoint}} and {{deleteCheckpoint}} passed the time as
one parameter. Please correct me if something wrong. Thanks again.

[~hexiaoqiao] the following is my idea, maybe has some incorrect points, thanks.

*a.* you are right, it is right way to update the version number without delete
old patches.

*b.* as you supposed: What about create one variable record {{new Date(now)}}
before loop.

1. the variable +now+ used at point4 is set at point2, the point2 is before the
delete/create checkpoint loop, this is what you suggest.

2. as the point1 may sleep a more long time because of delete may cost some
minutes, this make the variable +now+ get at point2 will late than
+deletionInterval+,

3. i make +now+ aligned with +deletionInterval+ at point3, so at point4 the
name of new create checkpoint is aligned with deletionInterval.
{code:java}
while (true) {
  end = ceiling(now, emptierInterval);
  try { // sleep for interval
Thread.sleep(end - now); //point1
  }
  ...
  try {
now = Time.now(); //point2
if (now >= end) {
  ...
  if (deletionInterval != 0) {
now = floor(now, deletionInterval); //point3
  }
  for (FileStatus trashRoot : trashRoots) { // dump each trash
try {
  ...
  trash.createCheckpoint(trashRoot.getPath(), new Date(now)); //point4
}
  }
}
  } catch (Exception e) {
LOG.warn("RuntimeException during Trash.Emptier.run(): ", e);
  }
}
{code}

the Date(now) aligned with deletionInterval before loop.

One thought about this issue. As you said, it still may be late to create
checkpoint path, What about create one variable record {{new Date(now)}} before
loop, then the following create using this date time only rather than get
locally? FYI. Thanks again.

he Xiaoqiao, thanks for your suggestions, as there may be many trashroot dirs,
so it still may be late to create 2th 3th 4th trashroot dir checkpoint.

  ...
  try {
trash.createCheckpoint(trashRoot.getPath(), new Date(now));
trash.deleteCheckpoint(trashRoot.getPath(), false);

He Xiaoqiao commented on HDFS-14586:

It makes sense at first sight. But I am also going to concern if it will break
emptier when we set very short time for {{emptierInterval}}.
IMO the root cause is creating checkpoint path at the un-proper time since we
cost time to delete the expired trash directory. Based on that, the direct way
is creating checkpoint path before delete checkpoint, as following, Just one
suggestions, FYI.
{code:java}
trash.createCheckpoint(trashRoot.getPath(), new Date(now));
trash.deleteCheckpoint(trashRoot.getPath(), false);
{code}
{code:java}
we need to keep checkpoint generated timestamp to measure something.
{code}
would like offer some more details? I think it is better to get access time or
modify time of INode if you want `measure something`. Thanks again.

[~hexiaoqiao] i have another viewpoint, we need to keep checkpoint generated
timestamp to measure something, so he do the check when delete, i think the two
ways are both correct, but this way can keep the timestamp.

[~jojochuang] Thanks for involving. I believe they are the same issue. I would
like to watch and review this patch.
[~huyongfa] Thanks for your report this issue and patch it again. Some minor
comment
a. Please rebase first if we want to patch to branch trunk.
b. I think another way is floor/format the checkpoint path date, then it will
not skip delete anymore. We should compare which way is more flexible.
c. Add unit test will be good to verify.
Thanks again.

Great!

This problem has also occurred in our production environment. More than one day
of the checkpoint directory was retained, triggering an annoying alarm call,
and we had to manually delete the expired directory.

This patch can solve our problem.
