Hello,

Am 04.04.2008 um 10:48 schrieb Lauwers Pieter:
I'm just looking for a good, standard temperament to tune both my
HG in. (G/C and a D/G. A little bit like tangent tuning for dummies.

First, a general answer: tune the gurdies to Kirnberger II (http://
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirnberger_temperament) - this is easy if you
either

1. have got a tuner that is capable of this temperament or
2. are able to hear and tune pure fifths: tune all fifths pure exept
D-A and A-E, put the A into about the middle position between its
position as pure fifth A-D and its position as pure fifth A-E.

if you can hear pure fifths this tunung practically can be achived
the following way (here for G/C):

tune the trompette to D according to the A of the tuner
tune the G drone according to the to the tropette in D, tune the
open G chanter, all G and H to the drone of G,
tune all A and C# to the tuner,
tune all D and F# to the tropette in D (retune the trompette after
the tuner A if neccessary),
tune the C drone to the open G chanter, tune all C, E, F and Ab (the
C as major third of Ab) to the drone of C,
retune the mouche or G drone into F according to the C drone, and
tune the Bb to the F
retune the C drone into Bb according to the now F drone, and tune the
Eb to the Bb.

now a row of pure fifths is established: E-H-F#-C#-G#/Ab-Eb-Bb-F-C-G-
D-A the interval E-A is much too small. The fret for A is fine in G
but to high in C major or A minor.

Retune the A down a bit, so that if you press the key with minimum
pressure it sounds nice in C and if you press it with more pressure
it sounds nice in G. Check the effect by playing an F major chord (F
A C) and an D major chord (D F# A) alternating. For this it is
helpfull to switch between the trompette in D to support the A major
chord and the C drone to support the F major chord.

This retuning of the A now establishes a version of the Kirnberger II
temperament as it is splitting the ditonic comma (difference between
7 octaves and 12 perfect fifths) between the two fifths D-A and A-E.
The difference to standard Kirnberger II temperament is that sice one
can change the pitch of A by pressing the key more or less, the split
of the comma is not equally distributed, A-E is bigger than D-A which
can be corrected by pressing the key.

kind regards,

Simon

Nick,

All the strings are adjustable. I adjusted the low D to a length where the high
d-tangent needs no adjustment to the left or right.

It means shortening the string ± 5 millimeters.

It works, but am I doing it right?

Hello Pieter,

Can you adjust the string length of the low D at the nut?

There are definitely some weird people on this list! (Me included)

A serious, even a little bit stupid question.

I'm having some temperament problems.
The moment I tune to a just temperament it feels as if I'm getting a dull
sound without brilliance.

I'm not that intelligent that I understand long dissertations about
temperaments. I'm just looking for a good, standard temperament to tune both my
HG in. (G/C and a D/G. A little bit like tangent tuning for dummies.

I was also under the impression that there was a little difference in string
length (on a D/G) between the high D string and the low D.

Example: High D chanterelle has, open, a length of 34.6 cm. The D octave
tangent is, without adaptation to left or right, at exactly 17.3 cm.

If I do the same for the low D, the D octave tangent needs a lot of adapting.

These problems are starting to keep me awake at night (together with to much
coffee and to much stress at work) so I'm starting to look old.

Help!!!

Pieter
