number of CDs featuring HG, including our latest CD, Court the Sun, and
other's recorded by members of this discussion list.

Hah! Useful coincidence that both you and I are on this list, Martin. Which
tells me that you are in the process of learning the gurdy. Super! We should
all get together sometime this summer and play.

For the rest of you, the aforementioned Claudie is the same Claudia Schiller
that sells the AEPEM recordings for Jean-Michel Peru. And I am serious about
those being a great little bunch of recordings. For the gurdy players, I
especially recommend the J.B. Bouillet Bourrees et Montagnardes cd, which is
just a delightful recording of obscure and lively little tunes, featuring
Jean-Michel on gurdy with Jacques Lanfranchi on pipes.

Mitch!

Alas and alack, we should have let you know, but didn't.? Claudie and I have
changed ISP's, so in a day or two the website link will go nowhere.?
Foothill.net was our dialup provider.? Claudie's new address:

Sorry about that.

AMTA (France) and CubeRoots (UK), previously mentioned, are pretty standard
sources for recordings by the top French trad?players. AMTA is the official
source for recordings by Bouffard, Chabenat, Anne-Lise Foy, La Chavannee,
Vielleux de Bourbonnais, etc., and they are a basically non-profit association
to support the musicians. However, at least as of a year ago, their shipping
costs to the US were painfully overpriced, for no obvious reason (you would pay
almost as much for the shipping as for the cost of the CD). So CubeRoots is
probably a more reasonable source, although their selection of AMTA recordings
is not as complete as AMTA's. Also, you don't need to understand French to use
CubeRoots, which overcomes a limitation for some buyers.

Are these recordings available from US distributors or shops? No. Available on
Amazon? No. Not even Amazon France? No. You get them from Europe, period.

I should also mention that a lot of the great recordings are out of print. I
would like to point you to my website, www.frenchtradmusic.com, where I offer
CD copies of out-of-print French trad recordings that were originally?on
cassette or LP. Look at the Mitch Gordon music link on the site for these.
Also, our Paris-area gurdy player friend Jean-Michel Peru, who is a scholar of
French trad and has put out some terrific recordings with his bandmates of
Carre de Deux on a little homegrown label, AEPEM, sells through his
sister-in-law in northern California, so you can get these recordings from
her?without paying Euro prices or shipping from France. See the Claudia
Schiller link on my site. Also have a look at the Alan Keith music link, where
you can get the recordings from two great California-based French trad bands,
Tour de France and French Creek (the latter featuring our list's own wonderful
Penny Cloud).

Greetings,
I'm new to the HG world having recently ordered a
Chinook model from Olympic Instruments. I am no
stranger to traditional folk/dance music, having
played bass guitar and 104 key German Concertina in a
polka band in the 70s, and traditional Irish and
Scottish music on button accordion, bagpipes and
bodhran in the 80s. I'm anxious to start learning the
HG and have the following question. I can't find any
CDs featuring HG. Olympic and Wee Piper no longer
carry them and I've found nothing on iTunes. Is there
any place in the LA area that might carry this item? I
would especially like to get the new one with Bouffard
and Chabonet together. I watch the OTW video with them
all the time. What a performance! Any suggestions will
be helpful. Thanks

Itunes needs to be easier to search, since there is hg
music on it, including, to toot my own horn, my own
CD. Searching for Melissa Kacalanos should reveal it.
There are better hg players of course.

I see there are also a lot of CDs featuring hg on
cdbaby:
http://cdbaby.com/found?allsearch=hurdy+gurdysubmit=search
Most are available as both CDs and mp3s. You can
listen to samples before you buy to see what you like.

Cdbaby needs to work on its search function too, since
my band Djinn's CD has lots of hg, but doesn't come up
when I search for it. Anyway, here's the link:

Hello Dana
You can get many hurdy-gurdy cds [inc Bouffard and Chabanet] from Cube Roots
in the UK.
If you go to my website www.drohne.co.uk and click-on the Cube Roots link you
will find your way to getting enough hurdy-gurdy music to keep you busy for a
very long time.
I am sure there will be no shortage of recommendations from people on this
list. As for me..with my new album to promote I had better say nothing to
influence you choice.
