Can anyone recommend the cassette writer that you are using ?

Re: [Histonet] Cutting speed

2011-12-31 Thread Stella Mireles
Teresa please express your concerns to your supervisor or lab manager now !
A new person in a lab needs more time than one month to get used to the
routine feel of a new place. Did they use a PRN during their search for
the new tech. If so, have that person come in and help during the vacation
break of the the other tech. Our utmost concern should be care of the
patient and safety of the tech. I know from personal experience that both
will be compromised when you have a situation like yours. You will be
rushed and tissue samples can be lost in embedding or cut away during
microtomy. You could cut yourself also. I am not even taking into account
the other responsibilities of a general histology lab that will be
compromised as well.
The histo students in our area are encouraged to be able to trim and cut 30
blocks in one hour. This does not include the time to embed the tissue, nor
the time to stain and sign out the case.

Worst case scenario; the other tech will have to delay the scheduled
vacation until you are thoroughly acclimated to the flow of the lab. My
personal opinion is that the this situation is totally unfair to any new
employee, seasoned or new graduate. I would never do this to a new tech
myself.

Stay in our field, be encouraged, it does get better Teresa.

Have a Great and Prosperous New Year

Re: [Histonet] How many tissues an histo tech is suppose to cut per

2011-06-28 Thread Stella Mireles
Joanne is not alone.

The lab I work at has informed us that due to their own research, a single
histotech should be able to do 100 blocks an hour.
I'm not sure if they expect embedding, trimming, writing slides, sectioning
and manual staining in this goal.

I am a seasoned histotech, and have tried to speak to my lab manager and lab
supervisor, (both are med. techs and have very little insight into what is
involved in producing a high quality slide), but their goal remains the
same.

I have an idea: I feel like printing some of your responses to Joanne
question and showing them that their goal is unattainable as well.

Any other suggestions.

I have recently traveled back from the future, and it does not bode well
for histologists. The robots are pretty reliable and can operate 14 hours on
a single charge. They also do not have to wear safety glasses when working
with the laser microtomes. No vacations, no calling in sick, no travelling
to seminars (new software version upgrades come to
 them)

I noticed that someone still has to come in in the morning to flip the
switches, but since CLIA will not likely consider that testing Well,
who'll need a histologist for that?

Funny though, pathologists are still around, but they are all workiing in a
single building near Area 72. (you don't want to know about area 72 unless
you are still around in 2035, then EVERYONE will know about area
 72)

They spend their full 6 hour day looking at scanned images on big-screen
monitors and drinking coffee. It's not that the future really needs them,
but the AMA still lobbies for them more effectively than the ASCP for us.

With apologies to all the really decent pathologists who monitor this

Others may mention this to you...and it can get a little political. Do
not discount the grossing bench. Whether it's the work of a PA,
Pathologist, or other qualified lab staff, the grossing bench should be
kept as clean as possible between cases/specimens. I mention the
political side because sometimes it gets a bit touchy...histologists may
not be in the best position to broach the subject with certain higher
level personnel. Especially when the grossing may very well be done
under the supervision of said higher level party.

From a patient care standpoint, etc., this definitely should not be an
ego-bruiser, as we are all human and make mistakes. But I'm sure most
of you know what I'm talking about and probably have experienced
something similar at sometime in your careers.

One tip I learned from a pathologist, was to keep a clean sponge handy
while grossing. This helped a lot, especially with keeping forceps
etc., clean in between cases/specimens. Lastly, there are pathologists
and PAs out there that keep their egos in check and we are thankful to
 them.
