MUSLIMS ASKED TO BOYCOTT AMERICA WEST AIRLINES OVER DETENTION OF TRAVELERS
"Suspicious" Saudi graduate students handcuffed and pulled off plane
(WASHINGTON, DC - 11/25/1999) - CAIR is calling on Muslim travelers to
boycott
America West Airlines until that carrier addresses the community's concerns
about an incident in Columbus, Ohio, during which two Saudi Arabian graduate
students were handcuffed and pulled off a plane for "suspicious" behavior.
(America West has hubs in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Columbus.)
According to media reports, the pilot of the America West plane ordered
passengers to evacuate and called for a bomb search because he said the men
had
asked "suspicious" questions during the flight and one had jiggled the
cockpit
door. Both passengers deny the accusations and say their Middle Eastern
appearance and use of Arabic were more likely the cause of the incident. On
detainee is reported to have said: "They thought that since we looked Middle
Eastern that we were trouble." He called the reaction a "stupid mistake."
The men told CAIR that they were humiliated by being handcuffed and treated
roughly during their interrogation. Interrogators allegedly made references
to
"EgyptAir," "Saddam Hussein" and "Moammar Qaddafi." The passengers were on
their way from Arizona to Washington, DC, to attend an academic conference.
CAIR's attorney is studying the possibility of filing a lawsuit against the
airline, law enforcement officials and airport authorities.
CAIR believes the incident was caused by cultural and religious stereotyping
related to the recent crash of EgyptAir Flight 990. Media reports have
speculated that the plane crashed when the co-pilot pushed it into a
suicidal
dive. The co-pilot's utterance of a common Islamic religious phrase has been
used as evidence of criminal intent.
