publisher stops distribution of
textbook that defames muslim women
(WASHINGTON, DC - 12/16/1999) - CAIR today announced that Wadsworth
Publishing will cease distribution of a college textbook that defames Islam
and Muslim women. (Wadsworth, a division of Thomson Learning, is based in
Belmont, California. It offers post-secondary texts in the humanities and
social and behavioral sciences.)
Books that are taken out of stock will have the offending passages
obliterated before being assigned a new ISBN number. The publisher will also
circulate an “errata sheet,” a loose piece of paper with changes to the
text, to be inserted in books that have already been distributed.
In “Marriage and the Family: A Brief Introduction,” by David Knox and
Caroline Schacht (Wadsworth Publishing, 1999, ISBN/ISSN: 0-534-55287-0), the
authors say, “Modern-day cross-cultural examples of gender roles include
subservient Hindu and Muslim women.”

The authors also make the following inaccurate and offensive claims about
Islamic beliefs:
* “In the presence of others, a wife must not speak to her husband or stare
at him.”
* “At meals, a woman eats only after the men have been served.”
* “A wife walking with her husband is expected to follow a few steps behind
him.”
They also added the following quote: “In Islam, the most male-oriented of
the modern religions, a woman is nothing but a vehicle for producing sons.”
In a letter to Wadsworth, CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim
Hooper wrote:
“I will not dignify these outrageous and unsourced allegations with a
point-by-point rebuttal. The fact that this anti-Muslim propaganda is
targeted at impressionable students only makes the situation more
disturbing.”
The letter also related the following facts:
1) More than 1400 years ago Islam eliminated the chattel status of women,
prohibited the pre-Islamic practice of female infanticide and gave women
full control over their earnings and wealth. 2) Other rights granted to
women by Islam include the right of inheritance, the right to initiate
divorce and the right to own a business. (The Prophet Muhammad’s wife
Khadijah was a prosperous businesswoman.) 3) The first martyr in Islam was a
woman, as was the first person to accept the Prophet’s message from God. 4)
According to the Quran, Islam’s revealed text: “The believers, men and
women, are protectors, one of another...” (Quran 9:71) 5) The Prophet
Muhammad himself said: “Whoever has a daughter and does not bury her alive
(the pre-Islamic practice forbidden by Islam), does not insult her, and does
not favor his son over her, God will enter him into Paradise.”
“Wadsworth has taken a courageous step in support of academic integrity.
This action will ensure that objective information about Islam is presented
to students,” said CAIR Board Chairman Omar Ahmad.
In 1997, Capstone Press, a Minnesota publisher of nonfiction books for
children, recalled the book “Muslim Holidays” by Faith Winchester because it
contained inaccurate and offensive material about Islam and Muslim culture.
Also that year, Simon & Schuster, the world’s largest English language
publisher, recalled a book that offered inaccurate and inflammatory
information about the Prophet Muhammad. CAIR initiated both recalls.
