          PAS : KE ARAH PEMERINTAHAN ISLAM YANG ADIL
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(WASHINGTON, DC - 6/25/96) - The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is
ignoring Muslim requests to clarify its relationship to a controversial
author who recently heckled a Muslim news conference in Washington, D.C.,
claiming to represent that network. “Pro-Israel researcher and author” (The
Washington Post, 8/8/95) Steven Emerson, producer of the controversial 1994
PBS program “Jihad in America,” heckled the June 13 news conference
organized by American Muslims to defend the Prophet Muhammad from alleged
defamatory remarks by a news magazine editor. (The editor later apologized.)
Emerson’s video crew told event organizers and other witnesses that they
represented “PBS.”
After the news conference was over, Emerson began heckling the Muslim
representatives, creating an intimidating atmosphere with shouted remarks
unrelated to the focus of the event. He repeated old, and unsubstantiated
allegations he has made against the American Muslim community in the past.
“Our children were shocked to see a grown man behave this way. They were
also frightened by the shouting and by Emerson’s aggressive manner,” said
Salahudeen Abdul Kareem, principal of the Muslim Community School. Students
from the school attended the news conference to show their support.
“Mr. Emerson was obviously trying to stage a confrontation with Muslims in
order to revive his credibility in the eyes of the mainstream media. Instead
of a being a journalist, as he claims, Mr. Emerson played the role of an
actor to manufacture footage that would fit his discredited scenario,” said
CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. “This incident comes as America is going
through a difficult period in which attacks on religious institutions,
including Muslim mosques, are becoming commonplace. PBS needs to clarify its
position in relation to Mr. Emerson. He should not be allowed to harass
those who are defending their faith by using an alleged affiliation with a
respected media outlet,” said Awad.
EMERSON QUOTES: “This (the Oklahoma City bombing) was done with the intent
to inflict as many casualties as possible. That is a Middle Eastern trait.”
(CBS News, April 19, 1995) “Oklahoma City, I can tell you, is probably
considered one of the largest centers of Islamic radical activity outside
the Middle East.” (CBS News, April 19, 1995) In The Jewish Monthly (March
1995), Emerson wrote, “The level of vitriol against Jews and Christianity
within contemporary Islam [Note he did not say “radical Islamic
fundamentalism.”], unfortunately, is something that we are not totally
cognizant of...We don’t want to accept it because to do so would be to
acknowledge that (Islam)...sanctions genocide, planned genocide, as part of
its religious doctrine.”
QUOTES ABOUT EMERSON: “For the first forty-eight hours (after the Oklahoma
City bombing), Emerson was a fixture on radio and TV, waging jihad on
Islam.” (The Nation, May 15, 1995) Terrorism expert Vincent Cannistraro
called Emerson “dishonest” and “Joseph McCarthy-like.” (Forward, 1/26/96)
“There’s more than a little bigotry in Emerson’s obsession with Muslim
terrorists.” (EXTRA!, July/August 1995) The New York Times Book Review said
Emerson’s 1991 book “Terrorist” was “marred by factual errors...that betray
an unfamiliarity with the Middle East and a pervasive anti-Arab and
anti-Palestinian bias.” (5/19/91) Terrorism expert Tony Cooper called
Emerson’s PBS program “propaganda” and said Emerson was a “stranger to the
truth.” (Dallas PBS affiliate, 11/21/94)
ACTION REQUESTED:
1) Call, write, fax, or email: Ervin Duggan, President, PBS, 1320 Braddock
Place, Alexandria, VA 22314
TEL: 703-739-5000 FAX: 703-739-7500 EMAIL: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
2) Ask that PBS clarify its relationship with Steven Emerson. If he does
work for the network, does PBS agree with his harassment of Muslims and his
anti-Muslim sentiments? If he does not represent PBS, what will be done to
prevent this type of incident from occurring in the future?
