UPDATE - MODIFIED NIKE SHOE WITH "ALLAH'S" NAME STILL OFFENSIVE
COMPANY REFUSES TO APOLOGIZE
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/31/97) - Concerned Muslims worldwide are demanding that
sportswear giant Nike, Inc. apologize for a line of that company's shoes
emblazoned with a symbol resembling the Arabic word "Allah." In response to
these protests, Nike is sending out this message: "We are pleased to be able
to inform you that all shoes currently arriving in stores do not carry the
Arabic word for 'Allah,' but rather a more clearly written 'Air.'"
Unfortunately, the "modified" Nike design is very close to the original in
appearance. The only difference being a small gap added to the design. One
Nike shoe, called "Air Bakin," has the offensive symbol on the back, on the
tongue, and on the BOTTOM. (Click here to view photos of the shoe). So far,
Nike has refused to apologize for or to recall the shoes with either the
original or "modified" designs.
CAIR is demanding 1) an apology to Muslims, 2) the immediate recall of all
shoes using either offensive symbol, 3) sensitivity training on Islam for
Nike employees, and 4) an internal investigation of how this incident

ACTIONS REQUESTED: (Be FIRM, but POLITE. Hostile calls and letters are
counterproductive.)
Call, write, fax, and e-mail Nike asking that they address the points
outlined above. (Send copies to CAIR.)
