NBC CANCELS "GOD, THE DEVIL AND BOB"
American Muslims took the lead in contacting network officials
(WASHINGTON, DC, 3/31/2000) - Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), NBC has
canceled its new animated series "God, the Devil and Bob." The program
portrayed God as a beer-drinking hippie who picked a Detroit autoworker to
prove that mankind is worth saving. (see http://www.nbc.com/gdb/) Some NBC
affiliates refused to carry the program or moved it to a late-night time
slot. The network pulled the program after only four episodes were aired.
CAIR asked Muslim viewers to contact the network and its local affiliates to
express their concerns about any company that would advertise during the
program. CAIR was the only religious organization of any faith quoted in
opposition to the program. The Associated Press (AP) article on the
cancellation referred to CAIR's original denunciation of the show for its
"tasteless and trivial portrayal of God."
Along with copies of letters sent to NBC by concerned Muslims, CAIR also
received a number of messages from Christians who expressed appreciation for
the fact that Muslims took the lead on this issue.
(An NBC spokesperson said the cancellation was because of low ratings, not
because of viewer protests or the refusal of affiliates to air the series.)
"We would like to thank all those who contacted NBC to let the network know
that this kind of programming is offensive and does not serve the moral
interests of television viewers or our society," said CAIR Executive
Director Nihad Awad.
