Large
quantity of Afghan heroin seized
Russian border guards in Tajikistan
have seized more than 80 kilograms of Afghan heroin likely bound for Western
Europe, the military headquarters in Dushanbe
told the Itar-Tass news agency Wednesday.
After a brief firefight with the border troops, six smugglers fled back into Afghanistan
leaving their horses and the drugs.
Last year more than 2,200 kilos of heroin were intercepted at the Tajik border
while en route from Afghanistan
via Russia to Western
Europe.
Russia guards
the frontier of the former Soviet republic under an agreement with the Tajik
government.
