THE NEWS:-

Telekom Malaysia may raise tariff as early as 2001
By Bloomberg, Singapore.CNET.com
Tuesday, October 17 2000

KUALA LUMPUR--Telekom Malaysia Bhd, the country's biggest phone company, said it
expects the government to approve a tariff rise as early as next year to help boost
earnings.
"The earliest is next year," Telekom's chief executive Khir Abdul Rahman told
reporters. "I'm sure the government will be very fair."

While the company may raise rates on some calls, it will likely have to cut rates for
others--especially international calls--as it faces intensifying competition from
half-a-dozen rivals in the RM13 billion (US$3.4 billion)-a-year industry. Telekom is
about two-thirds owned by the government.

"The world's going for cheaper rates," said KC Kok, managing director for research at
Worldsec Securities Advisor. "Telekom is facing greater pricing pressures, so what we
expect is more of" an adjustment of rates, rather than just increases for all types of
calls.

Telekom last raised its rates in 1996, when it decided to charge local callers by the
minute, instead of a flat rate for each call. At the same time, it cut rates on
international calls.

Meanwhile, Khir said Telekom will get revenue amounting to RM13 million a year for
five years for providing and maintaining the data network for Bumiputra-Commerce Bank
Bhd, the country's second-largest commercial bank.

Telekom is trying to fend off intensifying competition from rivals such as Time dotCom
Bhd and Maxis Communications Bhd by boosting earnings through its cellular, multimedia
and Internet-related operations.

Its profit for the six months to June 30 fell a worse-than-expected 46 percent to
RM371 million from a year ago.

Shares of Telekom, the country's third-largest company by market value, rose RM0.10,
or 0.9 percent, to RM11.80. The stock has fallen 20 percent so far this year, more
than a 5.7 percent decline in the Composite Index.
