http://www.islamonline.net/English/News/2002-08/27/article57.shtml ---------------- Muslims Nominated for Swedish Elections Sweden has integrated its Muslim immigration population within Swedish communities By Yehia Abu Zakariya, IOL Sweden correspondent STOCKHOLM, August 27 (IslamOnline) - Sweden’s political parties have nominated a number of Arabs and Muslims in the constitutional elections to be held in September 15, 2002, confirming the idea of integrating immigrants in the Swedish political, social and cultural communities. The election campaigns for Sweden’s seven parties have concentrated on the integration of immigrants within the Swedish community in an attempt to gain the majority in the Riksdag (Parliament). Sweden’s seven political parties are: the Left Party, the Christian Democrats, the Center Party, the Liberal Party, the Conservatives, the Social Democrats, and the Green Party. Each party was keen on confirming that Muslims and Arabs enjoy the same rights as native Swedes, pointing out that the events of September 11 did not affect Sweden’s relationship with Muslim immigrants. A large number of Muslims are already connected to the ruling Social Democratic Party, which calls for giving all immigrants their rights. Other Muslims, especially those who had leftist interests in their home countries, are related to the Left Party. Most nominated Muslims come from Lebanon, Palestine, Kurdistan, Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, Eritrea, Somalia, and other Islamic countries. Khaled Al-Wafea, of Lebanese origin, is nominated for the Conservative Party in Obsala city. Ali Molla, also Lebanese, has been nominated for the Liberal Party, while Zahraa Daei was nominated for the Liberal Party in Obsala. There are already four members in the Swedish Parliament of Muslim and Arab origin. Out of Sweden’s population of 8 million, 400,000 of them are Muslims. Islam entered Sweden only recently, but the Swedes harbor no animosity against Muslims. Muslims have had special treatment in Sweden, as immigrants there have many advantages. Such advantages include the ability to acquire the Swedish nationality automatically after spending five years in the country, as well as the right to vote in local elections. Sweden has called for serious talks with Islam and Muslims as it launched its “European Islam” initiation in 1994, calling for mutual understanding between Arab and European countries. _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ( Melanggan ?
