Re: [hlds] net_splitpacket_maxrate

2009-04-03 Thread Ronny Schedel

We don't see any difference when changing this cvar.

I'm resurrecting this email in the case that folks are still experiencing
lag/choke on servers (like me). I'm hoping that Valve will continue
improving the player experience regarding (what I assume to be
mis-configured) servers due to the semi-recent update at the end of
 January.

I've tried the various settings if/when I have control over them from the
following article, but they have no affect:

 http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/TF2_Network_Graph

Since the patch I've avoided sniping for the most part, but now that I
 know
the next class update involves the sniper...

 Here's Tony's post regarding choke/net_splitpacket_maxrate:

I was experimenting with net_splitpacket_maxrate and it seems it has a
 definite
noticeable effect. Assuming your server's CPU can handle the extra load
required by splitting an extra amount of large packets and compressing
 this,
I would recommend setting this to the same as your sv_maxrate (unless
 your
maxrate is zero, in which case you should set it to a real high value).

 Look at these pictures:

 http://www.sourceop.com/http://www.sourceop.com/randomimages/net_splitpacket_maxrate/
 randomimages/net_splitpacket_http://www.sourceop.com/randomimages/net_splitpacket_maxrate/
 maxrate/ http://www.sourceop.com/randomimages/net_splitpacket_maxrate/

 http://www.sourceop.com/randomimages/net_splitpacket_maxrate/

 http://www.sourceop.com/randomimages/net_splitpacket_maxrate/Because of
the constant stream of large amounts of incoming data, every packet in
 the
screenshots is part of a fragmented set. The CVar limits the rate of
 these
packets specifically and defaults to only 15000. This is a problem
 because
when there is large amounts of action, it is common for update packets to
 be
split because of their large size. If most of the update packets need to
 be
split, your rate will suddenly be dropped to around 15,000.

I see no drawback to increasing the value of this CVar other than
the increased CPU load your server might get since it will be splitting
 and compressing more outgoing packets.

 Hope this helps,

 Tony

If you have a quad core machine, and hlds/srcds is single threaded (which I
believe it is), then you're just about reaching your 25% maximum CPU usage
(100% of one core) for that server.

including raising net_splitpacket_maxrate but still the problem prevails.
The cpu usage is normal around 20%.

I use super micro based systems (1U), with 2 x 2.5GHz Intel quad cores,
12 Gig of Fully buffered RAM, and SAS drives.

They seem to hold up extremely well, and I would suggest getting the
IPMI card for remote KVM, very powerful.

Make sure you have a good network, which is always a big plus.

The only problem I have found with having such a fast system is filling
it, but I do use it for personal use and selling servers on it is hard
even dirt cheap.

[hlds] HL1 Map Collections wanted

2009-04-03 Thread Ook
Does anyone know of any HL1 map collections available for download? I don't
really have the time to download them one at a time from file planet, file
banana, etc. I'm looking for collections - multiple maps in a zip file, or
http/ftp access to listings of maps that can be mass downloaded.

I'd be willing to put mine online if anyone is interested - I currently have
2,226 HL1 maps that run without crashing, though I suspect a few dozen are
trash maps, test maps, etc. I'm still in the processing of cleaning them up,
and so far have eliminated maps that crash the server or are missing
resources.

My guess is, when a game get's its hooks into you, some people just
can't let go. Which is why I still play Counter-Strike to this day -
even if it's not as much as I used to. I even resurrected my old
stomping ground called Spacemonkeys, just because I could. That game
will always have a place in my collection, (relatively) shit graphics
and all. So maybe this is his way of keeping a personal resource for his
games before all internet resource finally stop serving related files?

If I recall, Ook has had his Op4 server up for ... 8 or 9 YEARS now?

Re: [hlds] HL1 Map Collections wanted

2009-04-03 Thread Ook
Hmm..it's been a looong time. IIRC it was the year 2001 that I started
running it on my lightning fast state of the art PIII/800, Quest DSL and a
Cisco 678 router. So yeah, 8 years now. It was Ooks 1001 Maps Pit of Death
or something like that. When Steam came out, I changed it to Ooks Steaming
Pile of Crap because that was what I thought of Steam, and I've kept that
name ever since LOL.

I'm actually running two - one that runs private_beach_v2 24/7, and another
that cycles through a random collection of my maps. I get people in
private_beach_v2 all the time, and frequent campers in the other that just
sit there and suck maps from me.

If I recall, Ook has had his Op4 server up for ... 8 or 9 YEARS now?

Out of curiosity...If HL1 and OP4 are about dead, what is your
  interest
  in
  gathering maps for them?

I remember PAF had quite the collection for a long time, but sadly
they're no longer around. I would say to check the usual file
  depot's
and see what's available there as far as map packs are concerned.

Sorry I couldn't be of any more help Ook.

Does anyone know of any HL1 map collections available for download?
  I
  don't
really have the time to download them one at a time from file
  planet,
  file
banana, etc. I'm looking for collections - multiple maps in a zip
  file,
  or
http/ftp access to listings of maps that can be mass downloaded.

I'd be willing to put mine online if anyone is interested - I
  currently
  have
2,226 HL1 maps that run without crashing, though I suspect a few
  dozen
  are
trash maps, test maps, etc. I'm still in the processing of cleaning
  them
  up,
and so far have eliminated maps that crash the server or are missing
  resources.
