[hlds] TF2 Blog Post

2009-02-18 Thread molaughlen
It saddens me that despite my best efforts to instruct and better you, some
of you insist on finding new ways to fail.

We have sounded the alert and released a quick fix for an exploit that some
unscrupulous players were using to wield items on invalid classes. I have
considered an appropriate punishment for the good-for-nothings responsible
for this horrendous breach of conduct. Death, of course - but death is too
good for disappointments such as these. Instead, their unlockable items
have been removed for a month.

To the majority of you who did not see fit to cheat, you have my
congratulations: I await the countless other ways you will inevitably
disappoint me in the future.

Yours,
TF Announcer

[hlds] Posting Etiquette

2009-02-15 Thread molaughlen
Take time to understand the nature of your reply. Is this message going to
add value to the rest of the group?

For example wow, Valve sucks, I'm going to take a shower need not be
sent to the ENTIRE list. Remember, there are at least hundreds of folks
that are subscribed to this list and opening the message up to receive
nothing of value is a waste of carbon dioxide.

If your reply adds to the discussion such as a real result, then feel free
to reply back to the list.

Re: [hlds] Command line switch fixes timeout on map change bug

2009-02-09 Thread molaughlen
Tony, I wouldn't go so far as to suggest how they should code up their
systems. It's very probably that only one thread is dedicated to the
network IO, so spawning a new thread just for stats wouldn't be a good
approach. If the IO system were to be split into multiple tiers, then I
imagine it's why it's taking Valve a long time to release the patch.

Re: [hlds] New inexplicable rate restriction making 26x+

2009-02-01 Thread molaughlen
It has been a problem about a week or two before the patch was issued. I'm
uncertain as to why... Maybe Valve made a patch to VAC which caused certain
clients to have issues? Or there's a hacker that's targeting VAC?

I use a linksys router to connect to the Internet. Maybe NAT has something
to do with it? Has anyone else experienced problems when they are connected
directly to their DSL/Cable modem?

Thank you Valve!

I'm sooo glad I won't have to sort through all timeout issue ranting that
have plagued this list in the past few weeks.

OK so after seeing so much noise from everyone I decided to create a poll
while my computer reinstalls XP:

http://www.misterpoll.com/polls/373079

If you would like to help, visit the poll and answer (honestly).

Once we know if there's a common mod or trend (albeit hlstatsX), try
disabling the popular mod for a day or so and see if the problem goes away.

OK if there is a 100% pure server problem, what about trying to debug the
problem using Wireshark?

[hlds] TF2: Random (?) destruction of teleporter exits/entrances

2008-12-13 Thread molaughlen
I ran across an issue on pl_cashworks_a4 (not sure if this happens on other
maps...) where engineers that destroy their entrances/exits may destroy
other engineers' entrances/exits. Granted I haven't run through the exact
repro case, but other folks noticed this during the game session.

While I was playing as an engineer I noticed someone else's entrance blow
up at the same time I detonated my entrance. Coincidence? Maybe, but other
engineers were reporting this.

Quake sounds and HLStatsX mods were installed on this particular server.

[hlds] L4D: TK'ing becoming more of an issue

2008-12-07 Thread molaughlen
I rent a server, but occasionally I have to join other servers without
active administrators. In the past couple of days I've run across game
degrading behavior stemming from pairs of team killers. They aren't
autokicked nor vote kicked. Typically I just leave and find another lobby,
but it happened twice in a gaming session and feel that it could be
resolved fairly easily and quickly by Valve.

If a player chooses not to leave a spawn area within 45 seconds, they
should be auto-kicked.
If a player chooses to shoot at a team player for 30 seconds (or a total of
25 health), they should be auto-kicked.

There are probably other harsher rules, but should control some of the
behavior in the game. It's become a more frequent problem and one that
can't be resolved by a team that can't get a majority of the votes for a
vote kick.

[hlds] HLSW+log/logaddress_add on L4D server

2008-11-23 Thread molaughlen
I'm having trouble with a gameservers.com-hosted L4D server regarding the
log/logaddress_add feature. The only way to fix it is to restart the
server. Basically HLSW will work for a few hours and then stops. Attempts
at re-enabling it produce timeouts.

I've added a ticket to gameservers.com but maybe someone else is having the
same problem?

I've verified that my IP is correct... Maybe HLSW is the culprit?

Thanks.
