It seems like it would be easy to have your horn underappraised by someone really unqualified to make judgement. Osmun will do appraisals, as will pretty much all of the reputable repair persons discussed on this list. My last one was done by Osmun via email, so you might contact them to see if it's possible for them to offer you a similar service and what they need to know to do it. I'm sure other folks like Ken Pope, Brassworks in MD, and others can do the same. I believe that insurance appraisals are based on replacement value, with a bit of consideration for the current condition of the instrument. Let's face it, if the horn is badly damaged, it can cost as much as a new one to repair it. Not to be too picky (we are getting a plug, after all), but it's Brass Arts Unlimited. There actually is a Brass Works in Baltimore, and if you're looking for a lamp or a fireplace set or something like that I can recommend them. As for appraisals, I can offer my guidelines as to how we appraise instruments. First, I have to visually inspect it right before I appraise it. Long distance appraisals leave open the door for insurance fraud, and I won't do it. Second, I appraise for replacement value. If it's a model currently made or there is a very similar equivalent in production, I will appraise at current manufacturer's suggested list price. Why? Because, if your horn is gone and there is no way to replace it except by buying at full list, then you ought to be insured to that amount. Very likely you will pay a discounted price, but then you will at least get full reimbursement for whatever amount needed to replace it. If it's out of production, then I appraise to the highest likely market value. Same reasoning applies. I will research comparables, usually on the internet and through conferring with other shops. If it's rare, one of a kind, or has a particular other uniqueness about it I will research comparables, but this is often an educated guessing game. I always state in my appraisal letter the basis of my appraisal (market value, replacement value, etc.), how I made the judgement (current model, used but sold readily in the market, rare, etc.) as well as my qualifications for making the judgment I made. Usually your instrument is insured on your homeowner's or renter's policy, and it is usually covered even if you have it in your car. If you are a professional, you do need to get commercial insurance or use the AFM policy. Re: [Hornlist] instrument insurance
4 years ago we had a fire that wiped out our house including a valuable horn. Fortunately, my best horn was at the repairshop at the time. All that was left of the 'torched' horn was a 3 square of the bell. :( Unfortunately our copy of our homeowner's insurance policy was in the house which the fire destroyed and not in our safety deposit box at the bank like it needed to be. After I got a copy of our policy from the insurance company I started reading what was covered and what wasn't (the idea of course would be to read your policy BEFORE you need to find our what's covered and what isn't). We were insured by Allied Insurance and there was a specific exclusion for musical instruments, firearms etc. in the policy so I figured I was sol with respect to getting anything for it. While making the rough lists of 'lost' items I said what the heck and included the Pax horn which was purchased used and valued(imo) at $3500. I had a replacement policy which meant that they would give me the depreciated value(usually but not always a % of the original value depending on it's age and 'life expectancy') of items lost in the fire and if I replaced them I'd then get up to the original value of the item. The insurance company at first was very slow in any payments forthcoming. After spending only $100 for an attorney( a gruff one) to make two phone calls to Allied's adjuster, the checks started flowing in. I ended up getting 80% right off the top for the horn and when I replaced it I got the other 20%. I also used an 'independent insurance adjuster' who cost me $2k but earned and saved me at least $30k. He wrote up all my lists for the hundreds and hundreds of items we lost, got replacement values for each item and worked out the %'s BEFORE the Allied adjuster did it. Allied then accepted the lists made by my adjuster. A combination of that independent adjuster and involving an attorney ever so briefly I'm sure greatly aided in getting me not only my horn replaced, saving me $3500, but helped save me thousands of dollars on many many other things as well. I've been putting off getting my horn insured. What kind of policies do any of you have? Does it cover the horn wherever you go with it? What can I expect to pay monthly? Re: [Hornlist] instrument insurance
I had it scheduled onto my home insurance policy. The insurance company required a professional appraisal of the horn so they could specify a value in the policy and decide how much to charge me. I think I pay an extra $40 per year for this. I have a $500 deductible. Fred Travis Bennett [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I've been putting off getting my horn insured. Re: [Hornlist] instrument insurance
Usually, the best deal is to add your instruments on to your Homeowner's policy. Or Renter's policy if you don't own your home. Separate polices on instruments tend to be a bit on the pricey side. Ken Pope had done alot of work on this horn (a Paxman 70A), so I asked him to do the appraisal. Hi Everyone, Don't forget that if you're a member of AFM, you can obtain insurance through them. Even though I'm an AFM member, I have my Alex's insured through my homeowners... Re: [Hornlist] instrument insurance
I tried to cover mine through my homeowners, but because I use it for income, it was considered a business expense, (not personal), and the rates were astronomical. Any ideas?
