[HOT] ICCM - Pre-conference Training

2014-10-23 Thread Heather Leson
HI everyone, a few of you are attending the Crisismappers Conference in
November 6-9, 2014 NYC.

I'm scheduling the pre-conference training and need a HOT community member
to help train for about 30 minutes. Are you interested? Please contact me
off list to talk about that. (I should advise in advance that I do not have
a travel budget to help someone attend.)

Also, I would love a running tally of who is attending from HOT. Kate, Dale
and Mikel are giving Ignite talks. This year we will have a simulation and
an activation room. There will also be a self-organized session all about
open sharing (data, licenses etc). Again, feel free to ping me on or off
list on this topic.

About ICCM this year -

Thanks so much,

Heather

Re: [HOT] seeking your help on OSM data extraction tutorial

2014-10-23 Thread Vivien Deparday
Hi Mikel,
Jeff and I worked on this a while ago: http://learnosm.org/en/osm-data/
that could be revamped and enhanced. There is also at least one new QGIS
plugin to get OSM data. I have not tried it yet but it would be nice to
integrate if it works well as the current default one has some issues. It
would also be nice later on to include also Geogig as this is how the
snapshots were maintained on the GeoNode for Yolanda.
I would definitely be interested in the replication topic as it comes up
often.

Cheers,

Vivien

Re: [HOT] Eu Aid Volunteers and OSM

2014-10-23 Thread nicolas chavent
Hey Maning, thanks for the email: the fact that a local OSM community has
been handling training and support to the VSO volunteers for the second
iteration of a EUROSHA like program makes this replication even more
robust.
This indicates an increases of the replicability of such program and
somehow reminds us of the HOT project about the fundamental_overarching aim
of our action: create/support local OSM capacities able to interact with
any actors in-country and globally.

Thanks for this article jorieke.
Indeed Project NOAH is Ph govt's major effort to produce accurate hazard
maps for the whole country. Osm complements these efforts as a major source
of exposure data. We already trained some of noah's young scientists on how
to edit/use osm data.

Hi everyone, as former EUROSHA EU Aid Volunteer, I can just say it was an
immense pleasure to be part of such great experience. I always keep thinking
and speaking about it! Thank you to all of you HOT guys, especially Sev and
Nicolas who strongly supported us. Hopefully, the international community will
keep investing in the use of mapping tools for humanitarian purpose.
Good luck guys with the great job you are doing for the ebola response!

Thanks Jorieke, highest credit for Sev then since he followed the Eurosha
mapping teams of Burundi, Central African Republic and Kenya.
But truly you and the other mappers from the EUROSHA project made it easy for
Sev and I to find the energy, stamina to work with you starting and growing OSM
in those countries through paid and a lot of voluntary time.
These are for me fantastic memories still acutely vivid and energizing, so
again, thanks and congrats for this collective engagement of you Eurosha
mappers.
Hopefully, in the EU, we through EUROSHA opened a way that other volunteering
organizations will continue exploring and adopting like VSO,
Ideally, those experiments will feed into the World Humanitarian Summit and the
on-going open dialogue on changing the aid system at play within the large
humantarian and development communities.

very good article indeed :-)
I particularly like the quote:
