Yesterday I met the folks from https://denguehack.org and with ICM-Jamaica
we been looking at Zika.

Wouldn't it be great if we could go for a "Mosquito Borne Diseases"
challenge to attract a wider audience and given it is the same breed of
mosquito that we are targeting?

Kind regards,

Re: [HOT] Data Collection

2017-03-06 Thread Robert Banick
Hi Gertrude,

Some quick answers

   1. I would use OMK to collect private, linked data. It’s the best tool
   available at present.
   2. Unfortunately you’ll need to manually script connections between your
private data and public data. My friend Ewan Oglethorpe did this for a
project here in Nepal, you can reuse his code if you like.
   https://github.com/eoglethorpe/hfh
   3. You should be able to create your own, custom survey with all the
fields you like in OMK and ODK. You should use XLSForms to create these
surveys as that will allow you to call osm data types.
   4. I believe conditional statements for OMK work the same as for ODK in
   XLSForms. (http://xlsform.org/)

I would also look at the OSM for Government page which discusses some of
the licensing issues:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OpenStreetMap_for_Government

This is a problem my team at the World Bank is looking into…but resolving
it will take some time. Developing a generic solution for everyone’s custom
private data needs is not easy!

Best,
Robert

Re: [HOT] Data Collection

2017-03-06 Thread Yantisa Akhadi
Hi Gertrude,

I will try to answer some of the questions. For 1, I suggest to not put the
data in OSM, although we can put private data using custom tag and it won't
be rendered but people can still see it when they query the feature. I
suggest to put private data in another platform and then put authentication
(user+password) if they want to access it.

Couple of years ago HOT develop Separate Data Store
for this purpose, so that we can
store private data of an OSM object by linking it to their ID, yet I think
this project is not actively maintained anymore. Alternatively we can use
WebGIS platform which use OSM as its basemap and then put the private data
as layer on top of it. We use this for several of our projects in
Indonesia, although in our case the data is not private but you can surely
put additional login mechanism if you only want specific people to access
it. One example is how we use GIS Cloud to visualize flood report

from GeoDataCollect (an ODK Collect variant) app.

[HOT] HOT in Research

2017-03-06 Thread Emir Hartato
Hi everyone,

You may wondering why I'm missing in HOT's action since couple years ago -
that's because I was busy working on my research for my masters.

Now I'm pleased to announce that my research titled *Volunteered Geographic
Information (VGI) for Disaster Management *is completed. Unfortunately I
can't published the thesis document yet as it's being examined. However,
summary of results (in English and Indonesian) can be found here:
https://www.researchgate.net/project/Volunteered-Geographic-Information-VGI-for-Disaster-Management-A-Case-Study-for-Floods-in-Jakarta

Paper version for journal publication is on progress.

*Abstract:*

*Existing studies reveal that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be
used to enhance disaster management for reducing disaster risks. However,
geospatial information acquisition is a key challenge when using GIS for
disaster management, particularly in developing countries. A number of
studies reveal that Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) has potential
as an alternative method for collecting geospatial information in disaster
management. Researchers have called for the development of a framework to
account VGI issues.*

*This thesis presented a framework to improve VGI use in disaster
management by using a qualitative case study of VGI use for flood
management in Jakarta. Two qualitative techniques were applied for data
collection to identify VGI potential, limitations, and opportunities in
disaster management: (i) in-depth structured interviews of 13 participants
with experience in producing, managing, and using VGI for disaster
management in Jakarta, and (ii) a focus group discussion (FGD) with 13
individuals from a local community with experience in conducting VGI
activities to reduce flood risks in their local area. Thematic analysis was
used to analyse the qualitative data.*
*Findings from this thesis include how stakeholders in Jakarta are
extending the use of VGI in management by using collaborative mapping and
geo-located reporting tools. VGI can provide advantages, such as
cost-benefit ratios, functionality, and knowledge adding attributes. *

*This thesis also identified that VGI issues comprise legal, credibility,
public participation, stakeholder engagement, and interoperability. A key
contribution of this thesis is a VGI-disaster management framework which
comprises non-technical and technical components. This framework builds a
strong foundation to enable VGI proliferation in disaster management for
government and non-government.*

**Cheers!**

Re: [HOT] Starting a new mapping project

2017-03-06 Thread Manuel Claeys Bouuaert
Hi Blake

Thanks for your fast response! Enclosed you'll find a shapefile of the
Okapi national park in Northeast DRC.

The participating organisations would be the Wildlife Conservation Society
(WCS), and NGO focused on protecting species worldwide, and the
International Peace Information Service (IPIS), and NGO delivering data and
analysis on peace topics, sustainable development and the fulfilment of
human rights.

The aim would be to map road, residential areas and if possible (illegal)
artisanal mining activities in the park. There are many stresses in the
national parks of DRC, including deforestation, illegal hunting (poaching)
and armed-actor controlled artisanal mining.

Both organisations are dedicated to work to reduce these tensions and work
towards durable peace. WCS does this with the focus on safe and well
organised park service, bringing stability tho the animals and people
living in the park. IPIS has a lot of experience with mapping artisanal
mining sites, and diffusing such information to inform actors in the peace
process.

Disclosure: I currently work at IPIS Research.

Looking forward to hear back from you!

Re: [HOT] Data Collection

2017-03-06 Thread john whelan
One crude method is to download the daily dump. Cut out the area you're
interested in.

So something like

osmconvert64 G:\downloads\zambia-latest.osm.pbf -o=f:\maps\zambia.osm

osmconvert64 f:\maps\nigeria.osm -b=8,0,15.6884766,9
-o=f:\maps\nigeria7.osm

Your drive letters will be different. Watch the cut out they are long
followed by lat.

copy your output file and that becomes your base map. It is not part of
OSM but uses the same tools. So using JOSM load up the file and add your
private data but tag it. Save the file locally. Do not upload.

In the future you can select your private data and move it to another
layer. Save the file.

Now download the updated OSM file. Load it into JOSM then load your
private file as a second layer. This means open it. Now merge your
private data into the first layer and save it. Now you can process it.

I've no idea what the TLAs

* OMK and ODK mean.*

*Cheerio John*

Re: [HOT] Starting a new mapping project

2017-03-06 Thread Blake Girardot HOT/OSM
Hi Manuel,

This is not a problem. The main criteria is that a humanitarian
organization needs the data for field work.

Please send me directly something that outlines the area you are
interested in having mapped, shapefile, geojson or .osm file will
work.

As well as some details on the organizations that need the data and
how it will help their project.

cheers,
Blake

[HOT] Starting a new mapping project

2017-03-06 Thread Manuel Claeys Bouuaert
Hi

I've organised a few Missing maps events now, and for our next one, we are
thinking of a new possible task in a nature reserver in DRC Congo. Together
with a local partner, we'd like to map roads and residential areas in the
park, and, if possible, also (illegal) mining activities.

My questions are:

   1. Is it possible for us to start/propose a new task ourselves? Any
   documentation on starting/proposing a task?
   2. We'd need to check if the best imagery available is good enough for
the task we're thinking of. Is there a way I could check this?

Thanks for you help
