Re: [HOT] Chequerboard Pattern

2017-05-17 Thread Harry Wood
I certainly have noticed this. It drives me nuts to be honest.

I remember during the Nepal response mapping I did nothing but fixing up ugly
square bits of forest. I think a few other people joined in with this too,
because these days I can see we've mostly eliminated them across that massive
area.
I don't know what the solution is really. I think the statutory instructions
should be *Do not add square bits of forest*... but not sure if everyone would
agree, and I guess people will do it anyway. Anyone have other ideas?

In the case you mentioned we have an old archived TM project at
http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/816 . which did actually ask for forest data:

"Also of interest are "gallery forests" (forests that form corridors along
rivers or wetlands and project into landscapes that are otherwise only sparsely
treed), as these are prime tsetse fly habitat (natural=wood)."

Particularly fiddly details to map, so it would take a lot of effort to finish
it off and eliminate the chequerboard effect there. Seems messy that it's just
left like that though.

Yes, the typical Tasking Manager projects (with squares vs. arbitrary task
size) are not really good for doing large natural/landuse features like forest.
Not sure what project(s) that is and if it's asking for that, more likely and I
often see mappers adding features that are not requested in the project. It can
make a tough time stitching all those forest bits together although in this
case it doesn't look too bad, yet.

Hi,
have you noticed how the use of the Task Manager sometimes produces nice
patterns like here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=9/5.5244/25.1862 ?

You can see that at least some users are very diciplined in staying inside the
box :-)

Hi Claire,

Thanks for the daily mapping priority udpate
The #Map4Ebola wiki [1] has been udpated for coordinating this
OpenStreetMap response to Ebola.

>From Lomé (Togo), in our 2 weeks OIF-funded capacity building mission (OSM,
Free GIS and opendata ), our West African mapping collective of 35 mappers
from Mali, Niger, Burkina, Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin and France has been
able to keep his #map4eobla mapping up 1h30/2h00 a day as part of our
regular activities.

We will hold an additional 2hours mapping session tonight.

Excellent day to all
Best,
Nicolas

[HOT] Reminder for Crowd2Map Community Webinar tomorrow at 12 UTC

2017-05-17 Thread Janet Chapman
I'm hoping to that many in the HOT community will be able to join the webinar
tomorrow on:
Crowd2Map is a volunteer run mapping project that has been mapping rural
Tanzania since 2015, particularly to help protect girls from Female Genital
Mutilation (FGM). Since then, Crowd2Map have recruited over 1,300 online
volunteers and 200 local mappers, and mapped over 1.1 million buildings and
64,000 km of roads and tracks. This has all been done on zero budget. Better
maps in Serengeti have helped the number of girls being cut drop from 3700 last
year to 1076 this, and the number of girls dying from 12 to 4.

This year, Crowd2Map are also very excited to be awarded a HOT Microgrant,
which they are using to train village level Legal Officers and Community Change
Agents in 4 different areas of rural Tanzania. During the webinar, Janet will
share the planning for this project, the barriers and enablers we have
identified so far, and seek advice from the HOT community.

Tickets are here

[HOT] DRC ebola response: urban mapping in Likati

2017-05-17 Thread Claire Halleux
Hi everyone,

Thanks to Digital Globe, a new task is now online to map Likati town:
http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/3009

Likati is the biggest town in the area affected by this 8th ebola crisis
happening in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is also the place
where all the coordination of the response to the outbreak is now taking
place. There are several teams on the ground with new material and staff
coming in each day.
At the time, this is our highest priority area.

After several mapping projects in highly forested areas, this 5th one is
focused on urban mapping: buildings and residential roads.
The imagery is black and white so it's a bit less intuitive than usual, but
that is the best we could obtain in such a short time for this area.

If you are a validator, projects #2988, 2990 and 2991 still need you!

Thank you very much to the many contributors supporting this emergency
response,

Cheers

Claire
