[HOT] Map for Preparedness Flood Resilience

2017-08-14 Thread Matthew Gibb
Hello HOT!

On behalf of The George Washington University, the Red Cross Red Crescent
Climate Centre and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery
(GFDRR) I want to introduce to you a major mapping initiative with many
upcoming projects in the HOT Tasking Manager.

These organizations have developed an innovative approach to flood risk
management downstream of hydropower dams, using machine learning and
Forecast-based
Financing

to effectively integrate information, decisions, and consequences. When
upstream rainfall and reservoir levels indicate that inundation downstream
is likely, a message will be automatically transmitted to the local Red
Cross/Red Crescent National Societies and partners, who can release funds
from the Forecast-based Financing system, supported by the German Red
Cross, to activate risk reduction and preparedness measures before the
flood hits. Like many Missing Maps projects, this is an opportunity to use
OSM to reduce the risk of disasters in vulnerable areas.

We are looking to extend this to other locations beyond the initial work in
Togo, Ethiopia, and Mozambique. In order to do this, it is necessary to
better understand exposure downstream of dams.

Keep an eye out for upcoming Missing Maps - Map for Preparedness projects
in the tasking manager, starting with:

http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/3408 and
http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/3409

For more information, check out:

https://www.mapforpreparedness.org/about-the-project

Thanks as always for your contributions!

Re: [HOT] Biggest ever mapathon to map rural Tanzania and celebrate 13 years of OpenStreetMap - August 13th/14th

2017-08-14 Thread Blake Girardot HOT/OSM
Dear Friends,

This is going on today! Please be a part of the event!

Help spread the word: https://twitter.com/hotosm/status/896733088956416000

We have a lot of high priority projects on the HOT Tasking Manager, it
seems like it would be impossible to get them all done, but like all
of the seemingly impossible problems of the world, if we come
together, we can do accomplish anything.

Peace,
Blake
