Re: [HOT] simple instructionset for beginners

Because of the answer on one of my previous questions now I try to correct
all these mistakes but with some basic instructions they can hopefully be
avoided
it’s frustrating to see that someone has done a lot of work and that it all
have to be corrected.

Personally I wouldn't bother correcting the buildings. Most are requests
from NGOs and at some point they will decide that badly mapped buildings
are good enough or they will bring pressure to bear on the project managers
and HOT to get a decent building_tool in place. There is one in JOSM but
it isn't promoted and that one is usable by new mappers.

When it takes longer to correct something by a skilled mapper than it would
to map it correctly in the first place something is wrong.

Re: [HOT] Early validation

2017-11-27 Thread john whelan
TM3 does at least show the number of tiles validated by a mapper which
helps.

My own feeling it is the responsibility of the project manager to find a
resource to do the validation since the benefit of more accurate mapping is
I assume what they are after.

It's also less work overall to catch the mistakes early.

Certain projects are validated as new mapping is done but currently there
is no list of these but you can look at the % validated on a project. If
you are a new mapper I would recommend these to you.

Validation is not for everyone. There is a certain amount of repetition
involved and often it is some of the least complex parts of mapping that
you are validating. Also you need patience although the temptation to just
give someone a clip round the ear is near irresistible sometimes.

Language can be a barrier. I give feedback in English but often this is
not the mapper's first language.

Hi Henk,

Welcome to mapping!

We have been working on a default set of instructions depending on the
type of mapping (buildings, roads, etc)

You can review (and contribute to improving) here:

https://bgirardot.gitbooks.io/hotosm-tm-default-project-instructions/content/

Any feedback is welcome.

Cheers,
Blake

[HOT] Early validation

2017-11-27 Thread Jean Marie Falisse
This comment is made by an inexperienced mapper, and as such the author would
not take it bad if it’s considered best to be discarded.

The quality of the work will be better if the validation process happens soon
after the mapping, the mapper being able to take kind remarks and suggestions
into account in order to improve the quality of his/her work. So we may assume
that mapping work should be validated as soon as reasonably possible. I think I
have read this under the pen of John Whelan.

But we might not have enough (experienced) validators.

Nevertheless, it should be possible, and this is my suggestion, to get some
reasonably good mappers as first line validators, with maybe some useful
guidelines, these validators having on their turn an experienced validator
behind them. The work of the (supposedly scarce) experienced validator could
then be accelerated. Or maybe tasks.hotosm.org website doesn’t provide for
this?

Another suggestion that I would like to make in the same vein is the following.
We could have a set of quizzes or tests online for mappers to evaluate
themselves. To answer the questions : “what could I do to improve the quality
of my mapping?”, or “Am I good enough to become a validator?"

Whatever the quality of the suggestions, thanks for reading.

[HOT] simple instructionset for beginners

2017-11-27 Thread Henk Nugter
Hai All,
I’m still a beginner in mapping and sometimes when i open a task there are
general instructions about what to do and how.
Would it be an idea to start with a small set of specific instructions like:
- Map buildings and square them
- Avoid building scrossing ways
- Always connect roads etc.
Recently I mapped a task where there were many non-squared buildings, some
roads crossing buildings and some other things
Because of the answer on one of my previous questions now I try to correct all
these mistakes but with some basic instructions they can hopefully be avoided
it’s frustating to see that someone has done a lot of work and that it all have
to be corrected.

Regards
Henk Nugter
