Hi,

I'm not sure why you would want to use imagery that doesn't show a large
percentage of buildings. The offset between the two images seems pretty
small, and while undesirable, not that big of a problem.

[HOT] Fwd: [OpenStreetMap] Alternative imagery project 2102

2016-11-06 Thread Daniel Specht
Hotties,

I've been reviewing some tiles on #2102 Suna East, Kenya - PMI/USAID
<http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2102>.
The instructions say to use tms[22]:http://imagegeocenter.
org/image/rest/services/Kenyasunaeastv3/MapServer/tile/{z}/{y}/{x}, but
when you go to the ID editor, the only available imagery is Bing. Most of
the mappers have used Bing (see below).

I'm new to the ID editor. Is there a way to add the newer imagery to ID?

[HOT] small tiles

2016-03-04 Thread Daniel Specht
The tile size used for the Fiji projects is great for residential areas.
It's a lot more rewarding to be able to check off so many as done. If the
tiles were much bigger people would get discouraged or sloppy.

But outside the residential areas there are a lot of tiles with no
features, which wastes time loading tiles. I think the solution is to have
bigger tiles, maybe twice the length, and to split the tiles which are in
residential areas into 4 parts.

John's right -- we need more people validating, and we can accomplish that
by explaining how to validate in the instructions, just as we explain how
to map in the instructions. The instructions should have two parts --
what the customer wants, and what the customer needs. Currently the
instructions only describe what the customer wants. What the customer
needs, the (generally unstated) validation requirements, are at least as
important as the instructions themselves, and they won't be the same for
all projects any more than the instructions will.

[HOT] built-up areas

2015-08-31 Thread Daniel Specht
A lot of work is going into creating built-up areas, but the results are
inconsistent. People do good work, but there is no standard method.

Once buildings have been mapped (example: much of the Nepal project #1018)
built-up areas don't need to be done by hand. I used an automated tool to
generate built-up areas from as small area in Nepal, and the results are at
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B79TF0JkJwBffjIybGRVd2VNVllkdGd1bFBJdzJWUzdjM3N5Q1pDYm5NbGJuNVcxRXA1UjA=sharing
.

The polygons generated by the tool are more consistent, and have a higher
density of buildings than those drawn by hand.

The tool, which is part of ESRI ArcGIS Advanced, (i.e. ArcInfo), allows the
user to decide the minimum number of buildings per area, and the maximum
distance between buildings.

If there is a large area with buildings mapped, someone with that tool or a
similar tool could generate built-up areas for that entire area. This would
also be good for updating built-up areas after new housing was built. I'd
be happy do do some of this work.

Could validators at least have the curtsy to read the project instructions
before invalidating tiles because not all the buildings have been mapped on
a project that does not require buildings to be mapped.

I've brought it up in the Hot mailing group because although we talk about

[HOT] validating tiles

2015-03-24 Thread Daniel Specht
Lots of projects are mapped quickly, but validated slowly. This could be
because
(A) beginners don't feel qualified to pass judgement
(B) people don't like to pass judgement
(C) doing original work is more fun than reviewing someone else's work.

I have a couple suggestions for encouraging validation.

1. Include instructions for validation on the instructions tab.
Because the instructions tab only has mapping instructions, readers may
think that validation is for someone else to do.

2. Include validation statistics on the stats tab.
Because the stats tab only has statistics for tiles completed, mappers
may think that validating tiles is not essential. Also, these statistics
give the mapper, but not the validator, a psychological reward. I've been
validating a lot of tiles -- sometimes I seem to be doing most of the
validations on a project -- and even though seeing the number by your name
increment isn't the biggest thrill in the world, I have to admit that I
miss it..

Mapping in Africa from satellite images I find I'm adding perhaps half a
dozen settlements when I validate, they're quite quick and easy to do.
Some are huts and are not quite so easy to spot.

Question at what point should I invalidate? The question arises when
perhaps I've added a dozen settlements and half a dozen highways, I'm
fairly experienced so fairly comfortable the work is OK after I've added in
the validation but there is the question that I've added a dozen
settlements and no one else will be validating.

I'm looking more for pragmatic answers more than anything else, there is a
concern that if I invalidate a tile it may demotivate a mapper and at the
moment we have a lot of tiles to map.
