Re: [HOT] Inflationary use of the mailinglist

2017-03-26 Thread Julian Haag

Thanks for your reply, and thanks to Blake too!

maybe I am just not able to use a mailinglist correctly. No doubt
mapswipe is an interesting tool and is related to HOT. But in my opinion
only urgend topics should go into a mailinglist.

Don't get me wrong: During the Nepal quake there were 20-30 mails a day
for more than a week. I'm absolutely fine with that. That was mostly
important, interesting and urgend stuff.

Ignoring is a good thing until your phone or mailapplication on the
computer keeps telling you about new emails. Constantly.

@Blake: Maybe I will join the announcement list and just subscribe to
this list when getting involved in desastermapping..

Thanks!

Julian

It's just crazy getting dozends of emails a day on topics having
nearly no intersection with HOT at all! e.g. "Bounding box not in

the data?". There are boards, where, in my optinion, general
discussions should take place but not on a mailinglist. A

Is there a HOT mailinglist that just focuses on important stuff?

Hi,
I have encountered a potential huge problem and need urgend help
with that..
I added lots of highways and other things north of Baglung.
https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/28.27605/83.59624
These roads got rendered and are showing on the map right now. But I
am missing many of these ways and the river is also gone!
I couldn't figure out if I am the cause of this as my changesets in
this area contains 500-1500 new nodes or what is happening, but I
need help!
The data cannot be downloaded at the moment so I think lots of Nodes
got deleted.

Hi,
having very limited time at the moment, I wasn't able to map the
last days.
I have been active in Nepal since the end of 2014 and I had the time
to learn reading the Imagery regarding roads. Sometimes you have to
map from both sides until it becomes clear, how this track is going.

But I have a quite different perspective than some experienced
mappers. Its not a problem, if 2,3 or 10 buildings are marked as
landuse=residential. Its not important if buildings are squared or
not. Its not important, if these buildings are off by 50m or even a
bit more. Its absolutely not important, if 3 single buildings are
drawn as one big. And its not important, if this is a track, a road,
unclassified or residental street.
No, I'm not a retard and not a troll. But I feel some slightly lost
the focus on our goal!

Our goal is to help rescue and relief organisations! Search and
Rescue from debris is important a few days from the incident. NOW
our goal is to provide a map for logistics only! People struggle for
food and clean water as well as shelter.
So it is important, that these organisations know that there is a
building, there are spontaneous camps, there are major damages in
this village. Is absolutely doesn't matter if the shapes are
correct.

So, please, let us finish with our work before cleaning up. The
cleanup from this desaster need several years - both, in nepal as
well as in OSM.

Yes, I complained a lot about new contributors also, but despite of
invalidating tiles that are not perfect, I corrected important
things and validated them tough - not a perfect workflow, but it's
an encouraging one!

So, stay healthy!

Pierre says it best but my

To me the unsquared buildings are not a major issue in
Nepal.  Within a tile a JOSM user can select buildings, then
select an unsquared one remember the user select buildings once
more then square all the buildings for that user in one keystroke.

As a beginner I suggest you don't correct odd areas, let
someone else do the dirty deed, it saves having upset users and
sometimes its just a matter of someone forgetting to tag it and
often an experienced mapper can glance at it and give it a tag.

Paths and tracks unless its very clear I stay away from these
in Nepal and I'm fairly experienced.  There are a number of
terraces, the land can be quite steep so even though two ends of a
path may look close together reality is its a long drop between
  the two.

For the moment I'd just add buildings, if you can manage to
use JOSM and the building_tool plugin, you'll need the remote
control plugin as well you'll find it's very easy to use and
produces squared buildings correctly tagged and we have a lot of
  buildings to add.

Hi,
I had an argument with him too via PM and I kinda ticked a bit.. Felt a
bit strange getting a lesson from someone mapping for 3 months and
adding all in all 9000 nodes and having added about 100.000 in Nepal
this year myself. Invalidating tasks completed by maning added some
flavour to that one too.. :D
He wants all buildings to be mapped. Even those in landuse=residential.

It feels like a waste of time, but the instructions are a bit ambiguous
so technically he is not wrong!
I can understand, that completing and validating a task should be the
point in wich everything needed is mapped - #1018 is marked as STEP 2.
So we are adding more details.. I am not sure what to do, but I pointed
out to him, that his attitude might discourage some mappers (as it did
to me at first (only a bit :D)).

P.S. at the moment I try to watch the activities and (re-)validate
especially the ones done by beginners. In the comments there has to be a
kind and more exhausting text on what to do, point out learnosm and be
particular, what should be done different or be better. Try to avoid
saying what is bad ;)

In task #1018 there seems to be a user with little experience and lots

The person even entered in a kind if edit war with maning. I really
feel this is a waste of precious time.

In this tasks there are very specific instructions on how to validate
(which is a very good idea!).
They do clearly say that the major highways need to be there, not all
the highways.

I guess the goal is to get the relevant structures as quickly as
possible. That kind of nitpicking seems to be just slowing the job.

 Hi all,

I wasn't able to read all the email I got for the last 3 days, and
 there's a ton of those.

However, I've seen a lot of people complaining about beginner mappers
validating tasks even if they're not experienced enough to do so.
Before we find a way to avoid this with additions to the tasking
manager, I think there may be a workaround.

What about making the (100% done) projects in a private mode
temporarily and give access to a limited list of users so that they
 can validate the done tasks.

This could be used for this project for example:
 http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/1008

This would prevent beginners to come to this project, wonder what to
do and then validate tasks even if they don't know what they're doing.

 My 2 cents.

Locate IDP Camps and detect housing damages in remote areas

Seems working now, but It seems the SE part (past Trisuli
Bazar) of the task is still without the latest imagery.

   Good news!
After 7 days of waiting due to bad weather
conditions, we received today various images from DigitalGlobe and
CNES/Astrium. In tthese difficult conditions, all the imagery
providers and UNOSAT are coordinating to provide images. This was
possible today! Thanks to all for your continous efforts.

Nirab Pudasaini from Kathmandu Living Labs is working
with me to define a serie of jobs to respond quiclky to this
emergency. These people did not have any relief over the last week
with bad weather and roads lanslides.
