I am also interested in mining activities in Mozambique for an
environmental health research project looking into the effects of poorly
regulated mining on health.
I think this initiative can be used to generate interesting data to
understand the impact of mining activities in general.

Anders,
Thanks for the tips and outreach. I will follow up with you.

Chad,
Thanks for the tip, looks interesting!

Martin, Claire,
I go to (or help organize) most of the mapathons at IPIS :)
The volunteer organisation I'm talking to now has a different focus, though
I do see them potentially working together later.

Hi Joost, Russell, all,

At Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) we track, collect and structure
data on mining contracts (resourcecontracts.org) and projects
(resourceprojects.org). We are also interested in improving the public domain
access to accurate lat/longs on mines (happy to discuss further) and would also
be interested in providing input on OSM tagging if useful.

In the meantime one relatively rich public domain dataset on mine locations in
Africa is this from the World Bank:
https://energydata.info/dataset/africa-powermining-projects-database

Hi Joost,

The Belgian NGO IPIS has done a lot of work on mapping mines & resources
linked with conflicts, in DRC in particular.

I think they are interested by OSM (Alexandre was at the HOT summit in
Brussels) but I'm not sure how much they're using OSM already.

If you'd like I'd be happy to connect you. But since it's you asking,
I'm wondering if they're not the organization you're referring to
already! ;-)
