There's a new version of the JSON attached. The Perl module I'm using to
gather feed data (XML::Feed) is confused when feeds have two or more
tags. The RSS spec permits only one. The module (actually
XML::RSS which is called by it) returns "ARRAY(...)" in front of the
image URL when this happens, but I've cleaned this out the current JSON
until I can find a better solution.

The script that does this stuff gathers feed information and stashes it
in a SQLite database, and the JSON is created from a query against this
snapshot. The plan was to incorporate the templating system "Template
Toolkit" so it'd be possible to run the script against any of a number
of templates and generate text or HTML as required. I have partly
achieved this today and have some very very basic HTML to send to Ken
for his feedback.

Thanks Jezra & Jon

I was planning on using the wonders of bash to hack the first version.

Has anyone any design idea for the look of the site ? Css etc.

Who doesn't love a left-hand holding a mic? :)

Styling aside, it should be fairly easy to write a parser that generates
static HTML from the source JSON file. No promises, but I'll see what I
can hack out after some farm chores.

[Hpr] Community News Recording for January 2020

2020-01-21 Thread Dave Morriss
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi All,

We are breaking from the usual pattern of recording on the Saturday
before the first Monday of the month this month because on the
Saturday in question we'll be at FOSDEM in Brussels.

Ken and I will not be attempting to record something at FOSDEM, as we
have done in the past, because we're going to be busy preparing for
our "Free Culture Podcasts" table on the Sunday.

Instead, we're going to find a convenient time in the week before, and
try and do the fastest recording ever, which will give us time to post
the show well before we head out!

The normal pattern will resume for the February Community News
(recording scheduled for Saturday 29th February), and I'll announce
details closer to the time.

Dave

Re: [Hpr] Help Needed → http://freeculturepodcasts.org/

2020-01-21 Thread Jon Spriggs
Easiest thing, if it's going to be static content, is to use something like
Jekyll. I've had *lots* of experience with this, see for example:

https://github.com/lugorguk/lug.org.uk-website and
https://github.com/manchester-tech-events/manchester-tech-events.github.io

For lug.org.uk (the first link), while the content is written and updated
at Github, it's actually served from lug.org.uk servers, so I can help you
with that integration too, if you want to host it from your own servers :)

Now, I know that not everyone loves Github, but it's a well understood
workflow.

Happy to have a chat, Ken, if you want some help getting this setup.

I should probably do an episode about how I manage these sites too, at some
point ;)
