Hi everyone,

This year's Realness Summit (May 27-30) is officially open for
registrations:

http://summit.realness.org

Realness Summit is a small gathering of like-minded educators who talk
laptops and children in the swelter and magic of the raw, real, Caribbean.
We will once again be holding the summit at Maho Bay, St John, US Virgin
Islands.

Each night, attendees will get together and watch the sunset while talking
about our experiences from around the world. Presentations will be given
each afternoon. Attendees will also get to watch the concurrent mentor
workshop and two children's pilots at the local schools. With attendees
coming from five continents and the Caribbean, we're excited to have so many
different perspectives in one tranquil place.

Maho Bay is located in the middle of the Virgin Islands National Park, which
covers half of the island of St John. Opened 39 years ago, Maho might well
be the world's first eco-resort, with 114 tent-cottages connected by wooden
walkways and stairs, surrounded by the natural beauty of St John. Bathrooms
are shared between guests, though electricity, grills, balconies, and
screens are included in each tent cottage. All three meals are served on
property, though there are some wonderful restaurants a short taxi ride
away. Maho has one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, with
incredible snorkeling and water sports.

[IAEP] Reminder: STEP UP OLPC Fundraiser in DC on Feb 24th

2011-02-17 Thread Beth Santos
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to send a reminder about this big fundraiser that we're having
for the computer program I've been helping groom in São Tomé. I just talked
to one of our teachers today, who said she is praying that we have success
in our fundraiser so that we can keep the program growing.

If you are in the DC area or know anyone there, please spread the word as
much as you can. We'll be selling t-shirts to support our cause, as well as
photography done by the kids themselves. I'll be driving up there from North
Carolina to give a presentation and we have a DJ coming to play São Tomean
and other underground hip hop music. We're also expecting appearances from
the Portuguese Embassy in DC.

A wonderful org called VOICES will be holding the fundraiser exclusively
for STEP UP OLPC at the Hillyer Art Space just off *Dupont Circle* in
Washington DC on*Thursday, February 24th*. Live hip hop music, food and a
presentation about STEP UP OLPC will take place *starting at 6pm*. I'm
hoping to be there but am no sure yet.

As many of you know, STEP UP OLPC has been going great and we couldn't be
more proud of the teachers and students in our program. Lately, however, we
have been having problems with chargers and need to get some new ones that
won't break so easily during power surges. That's one of the reasons why
we're having a fundraiser to get better quality materials for our class and
to see if we can't grow it even more.

*Here's a Facebook link to the event:

Thanks for all of your continued support!

Take care,
Beth

[IAEP] Notes from OLPC/Waveplace Health Discussion

2010-06-22 Thread Beth Santos
Hi all,

To those who attended- thanks for a GREAT talk about public health on the
XO! Those of you who couldn't be there, be sure to keep yourself posted on
our listserv, where we'll continue the dialogue.

See notes below about our Public Health meeting from Tuesday, June 22nd at
4pm EST.

Next steps:

   - Add more ideas under each of the OLPC Health unit suggestions over the
   *next week*.
   - Divide topics among people and build units over the next *month or two* to
create an arsenal of public health curricula that can be used in current
   and future laptop projects.

Ready, set, go!

Anyone not on the hea...@waveplace.org listserv who would like to take part
in the topic identifying and project executing, send me an email and I will
add you.

Beth

Attendees:
Beth Santos
Caryl Bigenho
Jessica Curtis
George Hunt
Steve Sargon
Randall Caton
David Cullen
Samuel Klein (chat only)
Mika Matsuzaki (chat only)

   - Interest in making public health programs for the XO
  - Focus on Etoys
 - Will allow teachers who are not familiar with computers to edit
programs so they are culturally relevant
 - Will also allow students to interact with the lessons more
 - Does not NEED to be Etoys-focused
 - Waveplace: divides units into ten lessons, each lesson is about
50 minutes in length (not necessarily all time used on the
computer, some
 interaction off the computer too)
 - We can take on 5+ units and create ten lessons for each unit (for
example, the sanitation unit includes lessons on hand washing, water
 filtration, etc)
  - Haiti, São Tomé- both locations that could really use public health
  programs on the XO NOW
   - Topics on the OLPC Health Wiki (can structure from here)- via
   http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Health_Content
  -
 - Physiology http://go/Physiology and body systems/functions
- Reproduction???
- Family planning?? Caution with these, could be culturally
insensitive/irrelevant
- Tobacco and smoking (also under air quality)
- Breast feeding
   - Steve's wife- La Leche Legue
- Water and sanitation http://go/Water_and_sanitation
- water testing and filtration
   - in Haiti there are good and bad wells
   - see microscope talk below- we can compare good and bad
water by number of microbes, color of water, etc.
   - Beth will get in touch with MIT students that created their
own water filtration kits for kids to use
   - http://www.water1st.org/work/bangladesh/update.html
- village-scale water treatment
- latrines- Jess-- water-sealed toilets
- Solar-powered water still

- Food Force on the XO explores the topic of world hunger
- Diet planner
- Vitamin A and blindness
 - Infectious diseases
- Make sure to focus on both communicable AND non-communicable
diseases

   - São Tomé has been able to end death from malaria under age
   5
   - Free from Malaria game on the XO
- HIV/AIDS
 - Indoor cooking and air quality
- Environment/deforestation/reforestation
- Pollution
- Smoking
 - First aid and field medicine
 - Disaster Relief http://go/Disaster_Relief
  - Also see more topics on http://www.tchd.org/kids.html
 - http://www.hesperian.org/publications_download.php (Where There
 Is No Doctor)
 - Ways to present info
  - Interactive lessons
 - take the kids outside or doing something physical
  - Data storing/importing
 - perhaps using Kedama
 - Netlogo/Starlogo
 - health simulations where kids can play
  - Get local involvement and ownership-- make sure content is *culturally
  appropriate and relevant*
  - Encourage local institutions and governments to adapt the content
and presentation of content to their needs
  - Use the XO as a microscope- camera has a resolution of 720 x 480
 - Kids can use the microscope to explore micro/macrobiotic things
 in water, for example
 - seeing the invisible
  - Mike Dawson's Afghanistan stuff
 -

http://www.paiwastoon.af/index.php?option=com_contentview=articleid=50Itemid=23lang=en
 - Teachers and other locals would be able to make their own
 programs

[IAEP] Health nuts

2010-06-15 Thread Beth Santos
Hey all,

Looking for someone who can get me in touch with people who might be
interested in developing health-focused Etoys education software- nutrition,
sanitation, HIV/AIDS awareness, malaria prevention, anatomy, etc. This is an
initiative I want to grow in countries in Africa and could use some content
help. Whether it's international health professionals or computer
programmers who want to make the actual games, let me know.

 A rather minor point

As we talk about content to augment teaching specific concepts or tasks ,it
might be better to use the educator terminology of learning object[1] rather
than game. I see rather a lot of push back when talking to teachers about
'games', but the parse 'learning object' seems to resonate well:)
