Sebastian and other members of the SoaS team are working hard on finalizing the master this weekend. In this holiday season with $250 Kindles and $299 Nooks and $$$ eBooks, we want to talk about Sugar's great eBook tools as well as open access eBooks - that eBooks shouldn't be only pricey DRM'd downloads for pricey gadgets. To do this, we want to populate Blueberry's Journal with a small number of eBooks. Small, so the Journal is not overstuffed; eBooks there will help new Sugar users to understand the Journal. We do feel though that it is important that of the handful of eBooks, not all should be in English. We won't have room for every language (that needs to wait for a later version of Sugar or SoaS which could have filter logic by language). But an eBook in half a dozen languages, with instructions for parents and teachers where to find others, will effectively demonstrate Sugar's potential as an eBook reader solution. Books written in the native language will be preferable to translations of books originally written in English - we'd like to show that Sugar content can be localized and not merely translated. Please suggest eBooks! ideally, an illustrated eBook in EPUB format (although we may be able to convert from other formats by hand since there will only be a few). Send links! If it's possible before Sunday, it would be fabulous if we could include an eBook created by children in the classroom! Even a collection of scans could be fairly easily bound into an eBook file. Re: [IAEP] R: [SoaS] E-Books for Sugar on a Stick (Blueberry)
I made a (very) little survey: - the Alice in wonderland (with Illustrations) is 1.7 MB in size - other epub books I found, probably text only, lies in between 100 to 300 K - Sdenka_Salas_-_The_XO_Laptop_in_the_Classroom.pdf is 5.6 MB - I added a spreadsheet made out of pootle latest statistics of today Question 1: what could be a reasonable size to add to journal = 50 MB? Question 2: one book for a selection of languages (10) and few more in english? Does make sense? ciao carlo --- Mar 17/11/09, Sean DALY sdaly...@gmail.com ha scritto: Da: Sean DALY sdaly...@gmail.com Oggetto: Re: [IAEP] R: [SoaS] E-Books for Sugar on a Stick (Blueberry) A: Yama Ploskonka yamap...@gmail.com, Carlo Falciola cfalci...@yahoo.it, iaep@lists.sugarlabs.org, Sugar-Labs Mailing lists s...@lists.sugarlabs.org Data: Martedì 17 novembre 2009, 17:48 It's an excellent point; after all, Mingoville http://www.mingoville.com/ based in Denmark I believe claims over 1 million users, 100+ activities for children to practice English. But there's another facet: dominant languages such as English, Spanish, French, put pressure on minority languages. Sugar has a role to play supporting many languages, not just in the interface, but in content. There have been suggestions in the past that we position Sugar as a great way to learn English, and indeed it can be (especially in a connected environment), but I feel English should not be privileged over local languages. My concern is the timing... Sebastian is under pressure for a December 8th launch and will need help collating books. The Blueberry launch is also threatened by sugaronastick.com, which as long as it is up will create confusion. Re: [IAEP] Sugar Camp Refection
Hi!, Absolutely astonishing approach, let me try to add my bit as non-native english speaker: Switch from paper to something electronic (we had a projector, just needed to leave a dedicated pc to the task), maybe a wiki page would do. The pros will be: Better readability of topics, auto documentation of process, (and hopefully) chance to get remote people to partecipate to process. The cons I see: Writing down topics may take bit longer, Dot checks implementation to be figured out... ciao e a presto ! carlo Date: Tue, 19 May 2009 16:37:07 +0200 From: Bernie Innocenti ber...@codewiz.org Subject: Re: [IAEP] Sugar Camp Refection To: David Farning dfarn...@sugarlabs.org Cc: iaep iaep@lists.sugarlabs.org Message-ID: 4a12c413@codewiz.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 On 05/18/09 21:38, David Farning wrote: Increase the length of SugarCamp.
