With the development of Unladen Swallow, performance issues are particularly hot right now, and the View Source feature has always interested programmers. [IAEP] PyCon 2010 Invitation
Hello, I'm the coordinator of the poster session for the national Python programmers conference in Atlanta, Feb 19-21 2010, and a long-time lurker on this list. I'm writing to invite anyone with a Pythonic topic to submit a poster proposal and to come to PyCon if you can, or to submit a virtual poster, if you can't make it to Atlanta. Poster sessions are new to us, and we're hoping they will offer more people a chance to present on a more diverse array of topics. We're also looking for virtual posters (5 min videos), particularly from the education community, both students and teachers. For more information about the poster session visit http://us.pycon.org/2010/conference/posters/ and for the conference in general (including registration fees, lodging, etc) go to http://us.pycon.org/2010/conference/posters/ The official deadline for poster submissions is the end of the month, but the proposal process is a very simple one, only requiring a few paragraphs of description. In addition, it's possible that we will be accepting poster proposals after that date on a "space available" basis. Also, the virtual poster deadline is considerably later. I'm sorry I didn't get this to the Sugar community sooner - I had assumed, since the Python and Sugar communities overlap a bit, that you probably were aware of what was happening with PyCon, but I now realize that I was probably assuming too much. In any case, I think that both communities might benefit from some Sugar related posters or virtual posters, so I hope that someone will come up with something. I should also mention that there is some financial aid is available to attend PyCon - please check http://us.pycon.org/2010/registration/financial-aid/ for more information. So please share this with developers, colleagues and students, and if you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks, Vern Ceder, Poster Session Coordinator, PyCon 2010 -- This time for sure! -Bullwinkle J. Re: [IAEP] NECC Proposals Due Oct 8th
Yeah, I'd be willing to help out anyone else who needs it, as well. In the past the Open Source lab has been a 40 (IIRC) station LTSP lab that Steve Hargadon provides, so setup only needs to happen on the server. This might not work with Sugar, but it's worked fine for me - people have been able to follow along with my Python examples, or not, as they choose. Just so you know the layout, the past couple of years the room has held around 100, with the LTSP laptops up front and more conventional lecture seating in the rear. So if the room is even close to full, the group is too big (and one hour too short) to do a lot of serious tutorial work, and there are machines for only about half of them. Still, you can walk through examples, or give them a chance to try some basic procedures, etc. (as long as you get any software installed on the server beforehand). Re: [IAEP] NECC Proposals Due Oct 8th
I've put in my proposal to talk about teaching Python in middle and high schools, which I've done the past few years in the Open Source strand. It's not Sugar, but it's within hailing distance. ;) Vern Ceder Walter Bender wrote: > I just wrote a proposal. [IAEP] K12 Open Minds Reminder - Sessions announced!
This is just a quick (and final) reminder that the K12 Open Minds conference is fast approaching. See http://www.k12openminds.org for more details - this is one of the few conferences devoted to Free and Open Source Software in K-12 education. There are two updates worth mentioning. First, the preliminary sessions list is now available at http://www.k12openminds.org/sessions - check it out and consider joining us. Second, the deadline for rooms at the conference rate of $97 a night has been extended to Tuesday, Sept 2. After that, the room rate will increase dramatically. So if you are planning to attend, book a room now (see the "Hotels" link on k12openminds.org). You should be able to book online all through the weekend. I know that time is short, but we hope you will consider joining us in Indy for this event. Cheers, Vern Ceder, K12 Open Minds Planning Committee -- This time for sure! -Bullwinkle J. [IAEP] Invitation to K12 Open Minds
Hi, I know that Walter already mentioned it, but I would like to extend the organizing committee's invitation to any and all of you to attend and present at the upcoming K12 Open Minds Conference (Please see http://www.k12openminds.org/) in Indianapolis, Sept 25-27. The conference is dedicated to furthering the use of open source software in K12 education, and attracts a wide range of participants from the US and abroad. Registration is now open and the deadline for speaker proposals is August 15. I've included the full invitation letter below. Cheers, Vern Ceder Schools around the United States and the world are discovering the benefits of Open-Source Software. In Indiana alone, over 150,000 students use Open-Source Software every day. Not only does Open-Source Software save money, it allows schools to extend essential educational software to students' homes and into after-school programs, providing extended learning opportunities at no cost. Are you looking for ways to provide more technology with less money? Could your teachers benefit from a Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle, Sakai)? Do you want a solution for all of your students to access their school work from home? Is your school community looking for ways to increase student engagement and learning? Have you thought about developing an Open-Source Software strategy to increase technology access while controlling costs? Join us September 25-27, 2008 in Indianapolis, Indiana for the K-12 Open Minds Conference! This is an unparalleled opportunity to talk with teachers, administrators and technology staff from around the U.S. and the world. We expect more than 600 attendees, from the US, Europe, Asia and North and South America. Dozens of sessions that address teaching and learning, leadership and technical issues related to open technologies make this conference a "must attend" event. Teaching and Learning sessions will feature experienced teachers from around the world demonstrating successful strategies and techniques. Technology and Infrastructure sessions will feature experts from around the world on issues such as: connecting to your local Windows or Mac authentication server, managing large and small network deployments, and using interactive whiteboards in classrooms in Linux and open-source environments, and more. Additional sessions designed for Leadership and Policy will demonstrate how policy initiatives and effective strategies for using Open-Source Software help to meet your educational objectives. Featured Speakers include: Donna Benjamin - Executive Director of Creative Contingencies and board member of Open Source Industry Australia; Alex Inman -- Director of Technology at Whitfield School, St. Louis, MO - an Essential School using open source; Chris Lehman -- Principal of the Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, PA, and; Dr. David Thornburg - Director of Global Operations for the Thornburg Center and author of several books including, When the Best is Free. For more information and to register go to: http://k12openminds.org A special conference hotel rate of $97 is available at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott through Monday, August 25, 2008. After that, rates may be higher. If you have any questions please contact Mike Huffman at 317.232.6672 or [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- This time for sure! -Bullwinkle J.
