However when I did this it crashed CA-11 - which is using a different Datacom SVC talking remotely to a different Datacom MUF on a different LPAR. (ouch!) I double checked everything to make sure this wasn't operator error and as far as I can tell, I did nothing wrong. To fix the problem I did a reinit for CA-11's (and Jobtrac's) Datacom SVC and a reinit of the MSM R3 Datacom SVC and restarted CA-11. As far as I can tell this is a bug of some sort, but I won't say so for sure until CA gets back to me. I have an open ticket and they have all the doc. As far as MSM upgrade was concerned, I just chose a different Datacom SVC to go along with the MSM upgrade from Datacom AD R11 to R12. My advice: Pick a new SVC number for Datacom if upgrading MSM from Pre-V4. CA-Datacom support replied back to me as follows: == As we discussed, the SVC is the communication vehicle for applications running on the same LPAR as the MUF, and as you have seen, these applications use SVC 246 as expected and without issue. In addition to that, the SVC is also used minimally with XCF processing, and that process, which has been in place for several releases, is to use the lowest SVC at the proper release level for this small amount of work. In this case, since both SVC 233 and SVC 246 were at r11 when CA 11 was started, XCF used SVC 233 for its needs. Then, when you reinitialized SVC 233 to version 12.0, control blocks and pointers changed, and XCF was broken, leading to the RC 83(01). You can then note that when CA 11 restarted and reestablished connection across XCF to the MUF, that there was no further problem. This, among other reasons, is why we have indicated for a long time that the CAIRIM process to REINIT should not be used to change release levels of the SVC. The recommendation has been that when introducing a new version SVC, that it be done at IPL time, or that a new SVC be used, and to not reinitialize a current Datacom SVC at a different level. == Of course indicated for a long time not to... means nothing to a new user, which from an MSM standpoint, I am. Also I reviewed the MSM admin manual, release notes and installation considerations and the migration checklist and there was no such warning about choosing a different SVC number. As matter of fact, the MSM install doc specifically says you can use the same number for a migration: SVCNO Specifies an SVC number for CA Datacom/MSM. Note: We do not recommend that you use the same SVC used by a running instance of CA Datacom r11. Limits: 200 through 255 Note: If you are an existing CA MSM customer and perform migration, the parameter value can be the same as in the previous release. Anyway... previous advise stands: Choose a new SVC number. :-) Regards, Mark -- Mark Zelden - Zelden Consulting Services - z/OS, OS/390 and MVS mailto:m...@mzelden.com Mark's MVS Utilities: http://www.mzelden.com/mvsutil.html Systems Programming expert at http://expertanswercenter.techtarget.com/
Re: ACF2 and LDS
Hi Andre, Sorry for replying so late but I just recently got round to this - I asked our guys and their answer is: The LDS is populated with outbound LDAP changes. It does not accept inbound connections to ACF2. This has nothing to do with age, as it happens. In order to use the LDAP protocol to validate an id/pswd against CA ACF2, the CA LDAP Server for z/OS would be used and is a no charge item. If the user have the LDAP from back then, they can attempt to use it, however, if any issues arise they can't get support as everything R12 and prior is out of support. Please feel free to contact me offline, or our Support team at http://support.ca.com for any further question. Thanks. Hi all, Please excuse what is possibly a very stupid question: Do I need always to put the fully qualified dataset name in LINKLIST/LINKLIB or can I use an alias? Re: CA ESP Workload Automation
Hi there, Since there have been no replies on the list I'll have my 5 minutes of product-plugging glory... CA Workload Automation (formerly ESP) is an advanced automation engine capable of managing enterprise workload from a single engine with that ability to immediately trigger processing of business data that is either expected or unexpected. Using advanced sensor technology, it can detect granular business events such as changes to a database, java messages, SAP events, etc. and immediately process that data, without the overhead of preloading the work into the system. With direct reference to points that make us stand out from the competition, this is what I'd say: - Business-event driven, not just event-driven (see previous explanation) - Reduction in defined jobs using inherited dependencies and variable substitution - Pre-production testing to validate definitions and job flow - Simple, English-based definition requiring fewer calendars and less maintenance - Built-in capabilities to simplify configuration and maintenance Please do not hesitate to contact me offline, or your local friendly CA rep, for more information. Perhaps some of my experiences may save time for others. I like the concept of having a consistent and hopefully more permanent interface with CA for all CA products, especially in terms of product download and maintenance conventions, and we will probably eventually try MSM on all our CA products, but getting MSM to the point that this might be possible has definitely been a struggle. The rosy marketing hype that implies that MSM allows novice SysProgs to do CA maintenance glosses over the likelihood, in my experience, that installing and maintaining MSM itself and the interfaces that make it work, and establishing installation conventions for usage would be difficult for a novice. All the nice easy-use demos start with a functional MSM. Until I see evidence to the contrary, I would be very wary of assuming that a novice SysProg would be able to handle installation and maintenance of MSM itself. I think part of the problem is that with a product like MSM that deals with both UNIX and traditional MVS components, you have a whole new realm of possible differences and incompatibilities in security and and other local installation conventions and practices that are just not yet well understood by product designers. There appear to be implicit assumptions made about our installation environment that were just not valid. Both MSM and CAICCI introduce new jargon and acronyms, and I got the strong impression that much of the documentation was written by those so immersed in the jargon that the forest gets lost in the trees. There is no grand overview any where that I can see to quickly convey MSM to a new user, for example: That the underlying MSM maintenance philosophy is that each separate product release have a set of TGT/DLIB libraries and corresponding CSI with product-release-specific prefixes used for maintenance-only, and that generation of separate set of related-name run time libraries is done for each separate production environment. Understanding that unlike z/OS, SMP/E target libraries will not be used directly for production is essential to understanding how MSM can function. An overview of the various address spaces involved with MSM (4 long-term plus other short-term), what types of functions in MSM cause tasks to to farmed out to other address spaces or the creation of other address spaces for running tasks. An Overview of the interaction of all the various definitions in MSM - e.g. downloading catalog tree requires Software Acquisition settings for System and User, http access to CA, lack of My Products list on CA Online, etc.; downloading product release maintenance requires Software Catalog System Settings and ftp access to CA; Applying product release maintenance requires the product CSI defined under SMP/E Environments (from MSM install or CSI migration), the CSI to be in the MSM CSI working set, appropriate settings under System Settings Software Installation, and no direct production use of CSI target libs, etc.; Deployment requires System Registry Definitions, User Settings Remote Credentials, a Methodology definition, and a Deployment definition, and appropriate CA-CCI setup to validate System Registry entries and run the deployment dataset generation task. A new user can eventually deduce these interactions, but an overview would save much time and trial and error. I think I now understand the basics, but still run into occasional surprises. What tasks generate new filesystems and when and how these filesystems may be deleted In fairness to CA, I would be willing to bet that the IBM counterpart to MSM which is also getting similar marketing ease-of-use hype and which depends on WAS, is probably also glossing over the issues of product installation. And at least the initial reports we got back from SHARE suggests the IBM counterpart may assume you have several GiB of real storage laying fallow, compared to the

I have attended the 'how-to-install' the IBM counterpart session in May. 2GB minimum more *real* is required. And I did listen to how the easy way out was taken in the installation path - mostly taking defaults that go against auditing requirements. You really had to listen hard to hear it, though. So, what I thought might be interesting would be if IBM would supply their documentation in e-book format, but formatted for an A5 sized virtual page size instead of US letter or A4. I think A5 would display better. I got the DX especially because it is almost A4 sized and will natively display PDF books. Another idea would also be the ability to wirelessly update these manuals from an IBM site. That would require something on the ebook reading device. Re: Panvalet Question
Lizette, Apologies for replying so late, I am not a Panvalet expert but I asked someone who is and their reply is: PANMODI is the Panvalet I/O processor. It is used by ROSCOE to access Panvalet PANLIBs (IMPORT/EXPORT members between Panvalet and ROSCOE). PANMODI gets linked with the RSSCPAN0 interface in ROSCOE. PANMODI is part of the Library Access Method for Panvalet (PAM). The version of PANMODI which is distributed with CA Panvalet is not the same as the PANMODI shipped with CA Easytrieve Plus. In trying to test a deployment, it looks like it will only work with future (from here on out) product packages and nothing that existed prior to a specific date. I tried a deployment with CA-MIM 11.7 SP1 which is the most current level and there is no deployment metadata. Also, we deploy by copying install libraries to an ISV sysres that is an extension of our maintenance sysres set and clone it along with our IBM sysres to roll out maintenance / upgrades via IPLs. The libaries are all indirectly cataloged as are all the sysres data sets. This means we copy them without cataloging them to the volume that gets cloned, and from what I can tell so far, there is probably not an option to do that. That may not be an issue if the process doesn't fail if the libraries are already cataloged - which they will be - indirectly - unless it is a new name / library for whatever product we are deploying. In that case, I would uncatalog the file after copy and indirectly catalog it. I have deployment up and running in my environment and the indirect cataloging of run time data sets and use of a maintenance ISV sysres is a problem in our environment in regards to MSM deployment. The problem isn't really with MSM, but it is with the design and use of GIMUNZIP. Unless CA can convince IBM to change the behavior or perhaps add another option in addition to REPLACE that can unzip without cataloging or not check the current catalog status. It worked as I suspected in my post above. I ran a deploy test and it copied and cataloged to my maintenance ISV sysres. I then uncataloged and then indirectly cataloged those data sets. I ran another deploy to the maintenance ISV sysres and it also worked (GIMUNZIP worked) by updating / unzipping to my target vol (maintenance ISV sysres) even though the data sets were no no longer cataloged to that volume. So here is my problem. I have more than one set of ISV maintenance sysreses ... all on shared DASD for installation, but cloned to IPLable vols in their respective sysplexes. After I do the deploy as I described above (and indirect catalogs), the 2nd deploy to a different maintenance sysres gets this error: GIM68301IARCHIVE archive WILL BE EXTRACTED INTO THE DATA SET dataset THAT IS CATALOGED ON VOLUME volume1, EVEN THOUGH THE ARCHDEF TAG FOR THE ARCHIVE SPECIFIED VOLUME volume2, BECAUSE THE DATA SET WAS NOT FOUND ON VOLUME volume2. Explanation: archive pathname or archid of the archive. If the name exceeds 300 characters in length, only the first 300 characters will appear in this message dataset destination data set name volume1 volume on which the data set is cataloged volume2 volume specified on ARCHDEF tag GIMUNZIP will extract the archive into the existing cataloged data set, even though the volume specified on the ARCHDEF tag does not match the volume on which the data set was allocated. System Action: Processing continues. Programmer Response: None And now my production in use (indirectly cataloged) data set gets updated! Sort of like SMP/E ignoring a DDDEF for SYS1.LINKLIB because it finds a cataloged version already out there and uses that one. I think this was an GIMUNZIP in SMP/E 3.3 enhancement, but is causing my issue. If the deploy process were to pre-allocate or verify that the data set(s) specified in the VOLSER= tag existed (on the VOLSER volume) prior to GIMUNZIP, it would work. I have yet to discuss with CA, but will. :-) Mark -- Mark Zelden - Zelden Consulting Services - z/OS, OS/390 and MVS mailto:mzel...@flash.net

Has this always been the design, or is this something new? I've always INPUT the IMSRECNO with SAS as a PIB8. numeric, but I had not previously implemented duplicate data removal from the IMS log record post-processing, so I had never had the occasion to look closely at the actual LSN value. But when I decided this week to add that logic (by reading the same file twice, PROC SORT NODUP'ing, and confirming that exactly one half of each record type was removed) I hit really strange problems that took a LONG time for me to realize they were the result of that first byte being non-zero, plus a SAS design error that I had documented ten years ago and had forgotten. When a 8-byte field is input in SAS as a numeric, I had completely forgotten that only 7-bytes of mantissa are storable in their internal floating point values, and that caused LOTS of identical LSN values, with 10*19 magnitude, due to the low order digits being truncated, and those duplicate LSN values were the cause of my NODUP failure. Now, realizing the my/SAS glitch, I INPUT it as a $CHAR8 and all 8-bytes are preserved and my NODUP works just fine now, but I still wanted to document what's in that first byte. And to show my complete lack of knowledge of how the IMS log files I get from customers are created, can you elaborate on the position of the file in the merge sequence? I just though you dumped the IMS log, and was unaware of a merge operation in that process. Re: IMS log record sequence number first byte 'F1'x - why?
Sorry I get this list's digest and somehow I replied directly to Barry. I am re-posting in case anybody else is interested. === Hi Barry, If we are talking about the IMS log record suffix, it is actually 16 bytes, and the first 8 bytes are the STCK time stamp. The actual LSN (Log record sequence number), is extracted from the log record suffix, and it is a hexadecimal number representing the position of the record in the file; prefixed by the position of the file in the merge sequence. For example, record 154 (9A in decimal) in the second file that you selected for processing, is shown as: 2-9A For DB2 and MQ log records, the LSN is actually the RBA. So your log record would be from the first file in the merge sequence - examine something from another one and the first digit would be hex 'F2' or 'F3' and so on. Hope this helps. Thanks. Hoping to find my answer within this esteemed group, rather than finding/subscribing/posting to an IMS equivalent, does anyone know the significance of the first byte of the 8-byte IMS Log Sequence Number (the last eight bytes of each record)? I'm seeing log records with 'F1'x (e.g., '1' EBCDIC) in the first byte in IMS 11, with one-to-several bytes with hex-zeros, and then the sequence number in the low bytes. Re: CA MSM
Just to clarify, and chip in with my 0.002c's worth, MSM uses standard SMP/E - SMP/E itself was designed (by some sadistic person) to make MF software maintenance easier to handle - because it takes care of keeping all the various bits up to date. MSM happens to be a (very clever and easy to use) new way of using SMP/E and doing software installs and updates. Kind of like Windows Update++ for MF, I guess... Thanks. The problem with all these gee-whiz tools is that they remove/eliminate the need for understanding the way things work under the covers. As system programmers we have to know the nuts and bolts of the environments we support else when things break (and they always will) they can't be fixed by using your own personal experience and knowledge. Look at the personal computer environment as an example. If an automated install process fails at the best it will automatically back itself out, at the worst your system is dead. Do we want our environments to even more dependent on vendors fixing all our problems? These tools are another attempt to dumb down the system programmer work force and allow management to say to themselves why do I need an expensive system programmer when I can get a button pusher who can click an icon on a screen for far less money. Mark, I sort of agree, but I don't think it applies in this specific case. There can and will be problems with installs related to this software, and it will still take an experienced or knowledgeable sysprog to look at the details (output) generated to figure out what is wrong. I don't see that as being any different than any other problem I end up looking at to resolve because someone with less experience or knowledge couldn't figure it out. This just makes it easier for the inexperienced sysprog *and* the experienced one. From all the playing I have been doing the last couple of weeks, I do understand what is going on under the covers, so that would enable me (the senior sysprog) to help a junior sysprog or someone else. We (as a sysprog community) already rely heavily on vendors to help us to fix problems with their software. Of course to varying degrees depending on the complexity of the software and the problem, but I'm sure there isn't a single sysprog out there who hasn't contacted a vendor at one point or another for help on a problem with every product they run / use / support. How many MVS sysprogs out there understand Datacom enough to fix Datacom problems with CA-11 or JOBTRAC or IDMS issues with Dispatch (BTW, I've supported Dispatch at various shop / clients for 20 years and when there was an IDMS issue I needed to contact CA about, they've been able to provide timely assistance). And before you trash CA for making things complicated, by trying to enhance their software to run 24 x 7, our experienced z/OS WebSphere sysprogs (been using it here since component broker) end up on the phone with IBM or opening PMRs for assistance for problems / issues practically on a daily basis (at least it seems that way). Operating systems and software today are more complicated than they used to be - at least under the covers. And the more that there is under the covers, the more an expert / vendor will be needed to help when things go wrong. I don't see that changing. Be open to change. Adapt or become extinct. Unfortunately, it's probably too late for the mainframe already, but at least there are some out there who believe it isn't and are trying to change it regardless. I for one really hope they succeed. Re: Is it possible to find out how many subroutine calls per IMS transaction?
*** cross-posted to IMS-L IBM-MAIN *** Jan, are your company not Strobe users? These are my reflections when I was thinking it over. Please comment! * Static calls are certainly not 'visible', while control is passed with a branch (R15/R14). From a MVS perspective, it would be possible to trace the SVC's for LINK, XCTL, CALL, etc... But MVS is not able to find out what an IMS transaction is, I think. It's the IMS Program Controller, DFSPCC20, which starts a transaction. Is there a SVC behind the DFSPCC20 scene which performs the load for a pgm? Another aspect: preloaded pgms. With preloaded pgm's, one doesn't even know when a transaction starts (I guess the control is passed via the usual register 14/15 stuff?). Other aspect: REENTERABLE vs NON-Reenterable programs. Once a reenterable pgm is loaded, it will never be loaded again. How is the control passed to such subroutine after it has been loaded the first time? Can something be done based on the program scheduling '08' log record for a transaction and it's counterpart the X'07'termination record? Might LE have an added value in this area? * Are tools available in the market place which are able to monitor or to measure this? * I would appreciate your comments. And don't hesitate to route me to reading material. Re: VSAM data set monitor
Hello Howi, As well as a variety of products already mentioned, Compuware's Strobe tells you your VSAM dataset usage - among a large quantity of related information. Limiting your use of Strobe to ONLY finding out what percentage of your VSAM DS is used would possibly be the IT equivalent of Donald Duck using a double-barrelled shotgun to kill a mosquito - it does the work, of course. I remember that there was a webpage ages ago, called Mark's MVS Utilities - the gentleman was an MVS sysprog called Mark Zelden and I think there may have been something like a VSAM usage script... it was all freeware, too. I tried to find the link for you - http://home.flash.net/~mzelden/mvsutilr.html as it happens - but it does not seem to load anything (also, I am not sure what version of MVS may be the last that the utilities supported). Products that can tell you how full a data set is include IDCAMS LISTCAT, IDCAMS DCOLLECT, Catalog Solutions from EMC, Catalog Recovery Plus from Mainstar, T-REX AMS/E from Dino Software, Vantage from Computer Associates, and probably a few more. The Vantage product can automate the actions you want to perform if a data set gets too full (send out an email, send an alert to the console, reorganize it, or other). You can also write a programs (using REXX, SAS, or your favorite programming language) to take some action when data sets get too full. The Allocation Control Center (ACC) product from DTS Software can actually trap the condition when a data set extends causing it to go over some pre-determined limit and produce a message or email. There are lots of ways to tackle this. It all depends on what your requirements are (check once a day, monitor in real time, or other). -Original Message- From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kok, Howi Sent: Monday, August 21, 2006 10:05 AM To: IBM-MAIN@BAMA.UA.EDU Subject: VSAM data set monitor Hi All, Is there a utility that I can use to monitor some VSAM data sets to tell me how full they are? I'm working with a client who has the transaction analysis and monitor Compuware system called Strobe. I am not familiar with this system at all and the client has neither the time nor money to provide any training on it. As I need to make extensive use of it, I need to get up to speed on it as quickly as possible. So, if anyone has a 1 or 2 page cheat sheet that shows how to do the basic functions, i.e. start it, analyze a transaction or file usage etc., that they could share, I'd really appreciate it. I do not have access to any manuals as I work from home and the client is in another state. Thanks. We are currently looking for tools to help us manage test scenarios - up to now to no avail. We would like to define test scenarios and also manage the data / processes. For example, a test scenario would consist of some user input in ISPF panels, a server request, a result being displayed, a dataset being created. After a major change to our software, we would run that scenario (as automated as possible) and check if the results are the same. Anybody got input on that ?
