How timely. We ran into a very similar situation a few weeks ago. $HASP9211. No $HASP9207, but that would be a matter of timing. This was on special-purpose LPAR that does nothing but providing support for DASD mirroring - GDPS under zSA under NetView. Since no production or test work runs there we have not done tuning that would normally be done on "real" LPARs. Whether purposefully or not, some XRC-related address spaces were given very favorable priority. (I don't know WLM so can't provide the particulars, but these were above JES.) One went into a tight loop. JES was getting no cycles. JES was not processing any operator commands. Jobs and STCs needing JES for input or output were hung. CANCEL commands had no obvious effects. Even FORCE had no obvious effect (although I suspect that if we had FORDEd the offending address space out of the system everything would have suddenly started working). The only clue to the cause was from the system trace in an SVCDUMP (of SMF, I think) that was taken sometime durig the hang. Re: *$HASP9211 JES2 MAIN TASK NOT RUNNING
Hi Lizette; I looked at the log and did not see any JES2 commands issued. The syslog stopped recording shortly after the messages. No SVC dump produced. Thanks Lizette Koehler Sent by: IBM Mainframe Discussion List 01/26/2009 12:06 PM Please respond to IBM Mainframe Discussion List To IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu cc Subject Re: *$HASP9211 JES2 MAIN TASK NOT RUNNING Do you know if any JES2 commands were issued about 1 minute prior to JES2 producing the $HASP9211 message? You might look through syslog to see. Or was an SVC Dump produced during this time? Have you looked at RMF Mon III to see what JES2 was doing at the time? The $HASP9211 message states: JES2 issues this message in response to a $JDJES or a $JDSTATUS monitor command or as a highlighted message. Based on context, this message can indicate an alert or an incident JES2 is tracking. This message is issued when the JES2 main task has been waiting at its normal wait for the duration specified. There are indicators that the main task does have work to do and should be running, but it is not. System Action: If the condition persists, JES2 reissues this message every 30 seconds with updated information. Operator Response: Monitor alerts indicate potential reasons why JES2 is not functioning properly. If this condition persists, notify your system programmer. System Programmer Response: JES2's main task might not be running because of improper tuning of MVS parameters or because of a problem in the JES2 address space. If the condition persists, investigate tuning and operational considerations first. For example, consider if online applications have been tuned to run before JES2 (not a recommended practice), or if the operator has issued a command that requires heavy use of system resources. It appears from the symptoms that the JES2 main task was indeed broken so badly that it could not process any commands at all. Adding the keyword FORCE is supposed to whack JES2 at the OS level using LPA resident code. Note the special syntax restriction; normal command parsing is not in effect here because JES2 is brain dead. Of course, recovering from this situation is still very iffy. From the Commands manual: "If you enter the FORCE parameter without first attempting a $P JES2,ABEND command, JES2 issues the $HASP553 message and ignores the command until you try the ABEND option. Specifying the FORCE parameter can cause unpredictable results. "Note: The $PJES2,ABEND,FORCE command must be specified as a string of characters. Blanks are not permitted within either the command verb or the individual parameters of the command." . .
