No, "all/wombat|xyzzy/" will, as Chris wrote, find all lines with "wombat"
and/or "xyzzy". If the line has both, it won't be excluded. Yes, if you want
ONLY the ones with both, you need the "&" format. But that isn't what he wrote.

Apologies if this has been answered 27 times already (I get the list digested):

No, MORE is not part of what's provided with XEDIT. As others have noted, it's
easy to write a macro, or to do something like:

all
-1/thing1/sel1
repeat *
top
-1/thing2/sel1
repeat *
disp 1 1

and you'll see all the "thing1" and "thing2" lines (yes, that example could
have been replace with "all /thing1/|/thing2/", but the point is that you can
do what you want as a set of steps, even if it does look like something vi
would make you go through...).

Almost correct. You have one surplus word, the "and".

The All string "all/wombat/|/xyzzy/" asks for "wombat" OR "xxzzy"

If you want "wombat" AND "xxzzy", feed it "all/wombat/&/xyzzy/".

You are correct in that the IBM supplied Xedit + IBM supplied macros
(one of which is ALL) do not do this. However macros such as INCLUDE
and EXCLUDE and/or various other names have been floating around the
user community since ALL became available. Some of them may even be
yours.

The syntax is different from ISPF because ISPF != Xedit. Results are
same or similar.

Not to my knowledge. But most of what I know of XEDIT is
far outdated. As I say, I once coded the function as a
macro; XEDIT exposes the necessary primitives.

Not necessarily. If you xedited a file which is still
out on disk, you

can get the complete file back by:
ALL
:0 DELETE *
get = = =
optional: TOP or :0 or other positioning as desired.

Or: just QQ and xedit fn ft fm again.

If the file you are looking at is a reader file that you
PEEK'd,

just QQ and PEEK the same file again.

Alternate answer: Similar to Gil's, but IMHO a bit simpler:

Do a "?" to get the ALL command back into the input area, and put a
"not" sign (shift 6 on many keyboards) in front of the first "/".
ENTER and you will see all lines that DON'T contain "string".
Then use the same delete command: ":0 DELETE *". Note that the ":0"
MAY throw an error, and "TOP#DELETE *" won't.

Now, in ISPF, how can I briefly return to unlimited display
then return again to the shadow display?

But ISPF is easier than XEDIT at adding lines to the viewable
set; in XEDIT you need to write a macro to do that.

CMS PEEK command - how to delete all SHADOW lines

I do an
ALL /string/
macro to get the lines I want.

How do I delete the other lines so that I can save a file with just those
line?

Similar to ISPF

X ALL
F 'string' ALL
DEL ALL X
