Re: Can anyone recommend a replacement for SAR or CA-View Spool?

2010-11-13 Thread Timothy Sipples
There are more than a few people who would consider using DB2 for metadata
as an advantage (operationally and functionally), but leaving that debate
aside

The original poster noted they have DB2 already. Now, of course I don't
have the original poster's LPAR configurations, etc., but as a general
statement TOM is unlikely to alter the peak DB2 MSUs profile much at all
(if at all) in a DB2 shop. (If you're not a DB2 shop already then you might
have a slightly longer chat with your friendly IBM representative.)

The original problem cited is that other, non-affiliated workloads
(WebSphere Application Server with DB2) are growing, and TOM would seem to
be very much on point in addressing that particular problem. Perhaps other
products are as well, but I'm doing my best to answer the original poster's
question most directly.

Yes, but it uses DB2 to store the metadata, and other info. We looked
at this product once, but had to quickly disqualify it due to the DB2
requirements at the time.

Tivoli Output Manager for z/OS is yet another option:

http://www.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/output-mgr/

Please note that I do not speak for IBM. However, my understanding is
that
Tivoli Output Manager (among other products) is eligible for
sub-capacity
licensing. In particular reference to your circumstances, if you are
adding
zNALC and/or Solution Edition qualified workloads, and Tivoli Output
Manager is not running in those LPARs, then you would not have to
purchase
additional licenses as your zNALC-qualified workload grows. But please
check with your friendly IBM representative, as they say.

There might be some other IBM product candidates, depending on what

Thank You John, It isn't the cost of the product, as much as MIPs charges
each time we upgrade to a new machine.
Our archiving workload isn't growing, but our machines are increasing in
capacity due to things like websphere and DB/2.
So the idea was to try and find a product that can run on a specialty engine
instead.

We have used Infopac / JCL from ASG in the past. It places the job

We currently use CA-JMR from CA. Our programmers and Production Control
people like it. It puts __all__ output from __all__ jobs for a given
time period (we use a calendar day) into a single dataset. It also
maintains an index for this dataset so that you can view a single job or
even a single sysout within a given job, a bit like SDSF when you put
the ? in front of a job's output in the H or O screen.

And you might want to review this email about SyzSpool.

Re: Can anyone recommend a replacement for SAR or CA-View Spool?

2010-11-10 Thread Brian Westerman
Hi,

Sorry in advance for the following marketing blurb :).

As previously mentioned, the SyzSPOOL/z Spool Management and spool output
viewing product manages all parts of the JES(23) output, and allows you to
access it from ISPF or via any WEB browser (if you enable and allow it).
The cost (at $5K before discounts) is a fraction of most other spool
management products, and an additional 25% discount is provided for all
Syzygy products for sites who's personnel are members of SHARE and IBM-MAIN.
Additionally, there are multi-product discounts for sites that wish to
purchase multiple products within the Syzygy Automation Suite.

The pricing is by the entire physical processor regardless of processor
size, number of CPUs or LPARs.

The SyzSPOOL/z manual can be accessed at http://syzygyinc.net/SyzSpool.aspx
