I tried to get this manual Zseries API, but I could not find it.
What the manual number.

No. The zSeries API has been around for many years--long before the Linux-based
HMC/SE. We first started using it on our z800 with an OS/2-based HMC/SE. I
suggest you download and read the zSeries API manual from IBM's site. That
book should answer any further questions you might have.

GSG (nice name btw),
Yes, BPXBATCH is the utility for Unix or something. I would strongly
suggest to CHECK IT IN YOUR DOCUMENTATION before asking. Ed suggested
several times that you should read the manual. I would suggest something
different: don't touch it before you learn the basics.

Asking the questions on the forum is not replacement of education.

Ad meritum: BPXBATCH is a program which one can use in EXEC statement to
run Unix command or program. Unix aka Unix System Services (USS) - part
of z/OS. So, it works on z/OS.

I seem to recall that there are some licensing issues to the effect that
customers are not permitted to modify the HMC software or hardware in any way.
To do so would impair the CE's ability to service all of the HMC, SE, and the
box itself.

We used it under OPS/MVS on a 9672, IIRC.
But, I know for sure it worked on z/900's.

Yes. BPXBATCH allows you to run z/OS UNIX shell scripts or commands in
batch. That capability has nothing whatsoever to do with the HMC.

Yes. It has worked this way for many, many years. Please download and
read the zSeries API documentation from IBM's web site.

Just checking, is there any other way to change the LPAR weights other than HMC

z/OS does not come with any commands to do this. There is some sort of an
API where a z/OS application can talk to the HMC. But I don't know what all
can be done with it.

It's called the zSeries API. The books are available from
ResourceLink. LPAR weight adjustment is easily done using this
interface. You'll have to get comfortable with SNMP and MIBs.

You can also enable WLM LPAR Weight Management and let WLM adjust LPAR
weights automatically based on real-time sampling. It's slow to react,
but it eventually seems to do the right thing.

Have you read the books on the zSeries API? I'm just using a slightly
modified version of IBM's sample hwmcamvs.exe.

When you unpax hwmcamvs.tar, you get the source code from which
hwmcamvs.exe was built. It has a hard-coded SNMP community name. So, I
copied the source, changed the community name on line #4 to match what
we specify in our HMC.

#define COMMUNITY your-name

I then compiled my own hwmcaphx.exe using the following:

c++ -c -W c,DLL -I /V1R4M0/usr/include/ hwmcaphx.c
c++ -o hwmcaphx.exe hwmcaphx.o HWMCAAPI.x

The hwmcamvs and/or hwmcaphx commands can be invoked from any OMVS
prompt, SSH, telnet or from a shell script or REXX exec running under an
OMVS environment. And, as I indicated, you can launch a script or REXX
exec that invokes hwmcaxxx in batch using BPXBATCH.
