NEW IBM Automatic Binary Optimizer for z/OS Trial Cloud Service

2020-07-11 Thread Roland Koo
IBM Automatic Binary Optimizer (ABO) is a unique offering that applies
cutting-edge optimization technology to improve the performance of COBOL
applications built with VS COBOL v1.3 to Enterprise COBOL v4.2. You can now try
it out with an improved, easy to use trial cloud service without installing it
on your system.

This new ABO Trial Cloud Service has been re-designed from ground up to quickly
evaluate the value of optimizing COBOL load modules using ABO. All you have to
do is to upload load modules of your COBOL application built with Enterprise
COBOL v4.2 (or earlier versions) in a dataset to the cloud service. There are
easy to follow instructions and videos to guide you at every step throughout
the entire trial process. After uploading the dataset containing your COBOL
application(s), you can instantly view the list of modules it contains and
select the ones you want ABO to optimize. After the optimization is complete,
you will automatically be notified so you can download and test them on your
system. Click https://optimizer.ibm.com to get started. All you need is an
IBMid. If you do not currently have one, you can easily create one. The ABO
Trial Cloud Service comes with a 90-day evaluation license at no charge. It has
the same functionality as the official ABO offering. The only difference is
modules optimized by the Trial Could Service cannot be deployed into production.

ABO improves performance of COBOL applications without the need to recompile
program source! Simply put, it generates code that can take full advantage of
IBM zEC12 to z15 systems without affecting program logic. This means the
optimized programs would run faster, use less CPU resource, and therefore, cost
less to run. Because the behaviour of the optimized application remains
unchanged, you can also significantly reduce testing cost. ABO is complementary
to IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS because it can help reduce the scope and
effort of migrating to COBOL V6. Because ABO reduces CPU usage for COBOL
applications, it can also help you optimize CPU consumption for Tailor Fit
Pricing.

Note that in the future, ABO will be able to deal with V5/V6 (and onwards)
executables, and those will for sure need PDSE.

There are some PDSE requirements for PDSE, not for executables, they are
documented and have been mentioned here in recent topics on ABO.

The PDSE Requirement is for Enterprise COBOL Compiler at V5 and above. ABO
works with Cobol load modules below Enterprise Cobol V5. I do not think you
use ABO for an Enterprise V5 and above Cobol Program.

So I would say no

Summary of Changes indicates no change related to PDSE.

Executable ABO output do not require, and have not previously required, PDSE.

With ABO v1.2, is there still a requirement for PDS/E?
